What is decision making capacity and how to know if a senior has capacity? And what's the difference between capacity vs competence? Or incapacity vs incompetence? You're not alone in asking these questions. Many family caregivers ask "can my elderly parent make their own decisions?" , " can my elderly parent refuse help?" Adult children often don't agree with their aging parents on things like where the senior should live, or if they should get care in the home. Determining capacity in the elderly is an age-old question for family members, and often, the mental capacity in seniors is questioned. Frequently, family caregivers ask how to know if elderly parent is competent. It's not always obvious, but there is a way to get a really good idea about the mental competence of your elderly parent.
In this video, I'll discuss the differences between capacity and competence, because many people get these wrong! I'll also share the 4 aspects of determining capacity in seniors, as well as what to do if you suspect that your parent lacks capacity to make decisions.

If your parent is making decisions that you think are unsafe or unrealistic, you might think that you should step in and MAKE them make changes that you think are the right ones. But do they lack capacity to make their own decisions? Or do you need to back off? Watch and find out. How Confident are You as a Family Caregiver? Take the Quiz www.sofiaamirpoor.com/Home

Thank you, this was a little bit helpful, but I feel there are lots of other situations in which specifically non logical decisions the older parent wants to make (and yes, it might be their right to make them), deeply affect third parties or most directly the person who is taking care of them. For example, my 90-year-old mother does not drive anymore, so I take her everywhere she needs to go, I drive and then I have to walk beside her helping her with stairs, irregular floors and so. She feels and thinks she's capable of doig things such as acrivating a debit card through the ATM and she won't allow and does not feel compfortable getting help from her own daughter (me). So finally she does not follow correctly an ATM instruction and the card activation process cannot be completed properly. The ATM imdicates she needs to go to the bank's premises to solve it, meanig that something that could have only taken 5 minutes, becomes a task which takes more than an hour, of her time... and MY TIME. Time that I need to work. And this is only one example. I have plenty more. My life and my time are completely affected by many of my mother's decisions and there's no way she would be willing to change things. I live in the same property that she lives, but we are in separate homes, like 150 feet away one fromm the other so I am the one who is in some way living with her and taking care of EVERYTHING that she needs. I'me the owner of a very small business, but having to take care of my mom has been a fact that has not allowed me to dedicate the time to my business that it needs to grow, so my business is stuckand I am really frustrated.
