What do you think about deep ecology? Do you think we need a major change to save the planet, or do you think it's unrealistic to expect society to change so drastically? Let me know your thoughts!

Absolutely need a drastic change. I think we're in for a heck of an uphill battle with 1/2 of the country here in the US (try having a philosophical coversation like this with a rural right-winger from here in Missouri.) They'd look at you like you're speaking Mandarin. I do think that there is hope however with the younger generations that are passionate about the environment and less susceptible to propaganda.

I'm a vegan undergraduate studying Wildlife Ecology and this is very interesting, thanks for sharing I never heard about Deep Ecology before! One of my favorite subjects is ethology, so animal intelligence and animal rights becoming more prominent in the scientific world really makes me happy and is a strong motivator for me. I appreciate you making a video about this :)

Deep ecology is an environmental philosophy promoting inherent worth of all living beings regardless of instrumental utility for human needs, plus the restructuring of modern human societies in accordance with such ideas, you will not hear about this in Wildlife Ecology as its not a science.

The yellowstone trophic cascade video literally changed my life when I watched it. I had just started gardening and after that video (and a few other influential videos) I decided that I didn't just want to garden to grow food for myself, but I wanted to plant out an ecosystem. I wanted to swap from being a gardener and cultivator to being a forager and passenger. I needed to change from being the only thing eating in my garden, and instead just being one of the things eating out of my garden. To share it with nature. But for that I needed to GO BIG and to plant incredible diversity, and to expand the plants I was planting to things I would never myself eat. It fundamentally changed my entire life, it created a new passion I never knew I had, I started documenting it and started my channel, started inspiring others, and now tens of thousands of people have started their own food forests based on watching mine grow. It honestly started a snowball that I never knew I needed. I'm so happy to see that video mentioned in your video. It changed my life forever.

How do we stop the spread of suburbia? I think neighborhood sprawl is the biggest problem, but I can't think of a solution that wouldn't have worse effects. I'm writing a book about how to fix our mistakes, both economically and ethically, but I'm stuck because my current solutions to the suburban sprawl just won't work.
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 3 жыл бұрын
I also think preventing suburban sprawl is a really ignored part of environmentalism. Suburban living in new communities is an outdated form of community development, cities need to be creating more high density housing and building up, not out. People should start thinking about condos vs the "American Dream" of owning a yard. Cities should invest in high quality green spaces so that people living in high rises can easily get into nature without needing a plot of lawn. Green roofs of buildings and community gardens can also help people who love gardening but don't have a yard. I can't even go into new suburbs without cringing at just how poorly designed they are.
@fusion9619
@fusion9619 3 жыл бұрын
@@kristina_lynn same, neighborhoods make me cringe. They took a beautiful concept, the homestead, and replaced it with this monstrosity that minimizes freedom and biodiversity and maximizes tax collection and bank profits. I'm thinking maybe cities should have to buy carbon credits if more than a certain percentage of their land is zoned for suburban neighborhoods. That's literally the least intrusive idea I've had. It's still a bad idea though because almost all cities have a tax revenue shortfall (at least in the US). It's complex... How to preserve liberty, property rights, and the environment at the same time...

Honestly I think one way to help out the investment without cutting meat out of your system completely is to stopping eating beef. First of all cows take up so much room and need do much more food then humans which takes up so much land. Also smaller animals like pigs and chickens do not take up as much land and do not eat as much food. Buying from smaller local farmers can help out the ecosystem better plus they are usually nicer to there animals.
@ViragoRiver
@ViragoRiver Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the effort put into this!! Plants and fungi are also living and sentient beings with utility outside their relationships to humans. They deserve the same respect other-than human animals do. With due respect, veganism ignores this. This understanding needs to be part of our transformation of consciousness, imo. Humans are not apex predators but we are definitely predators. And veganism seems to me to be a form of speciesism in that there is a bias toward caring for *some* animal species but not *all* living beings. There is not only animal intelligence.... there is plant and fungi intelligence, as well. Plants and fungi can suffer, as well, as sentient beings. The idea that we will save more plants by eating them instead of allowing animals to eat them and eating the animals is a fundamentally illogical argument... the ecosystems in which these animals live will have a carrying capacity and we shouldn't house more animals on an area of land than can be sustained by that area of land. This could be taking care of by eliminating cafos and adopting, instead, a sustainable hunting and small regenerative farming MO in its place. Another thing we can do to save the ecosystems in which we live is to learn our way out of the belief in "invasive species", which are not an ecological reality. It's so frustrating to hear you discuss the problems with speciesism and then promote veganism. There is not a blanket improvement in all people who forgo eating meat... all bodies have slightly different needs... for instance, there is research strongly suggesting the need for certain meats in the diet of a person with "ADD". Still, I very much appreciate your work and perspective.

How do you get from intrinsic value of component of nature to the intrinsic value of nature? If nature is a complex entity then it is more than sum of parts, and the particular parts are not even necessary for the whole: It can be a different whole as it changes its parts. Isn't the intrinsic value of nature, its radical instability and its purposeless development, a negative value to be repudiated by a living system seeking stability and creating purpose from available energy by working against environment? Environmentalism seems to push a story of causality in which humans are a main cause of planetary evolution. However, we did not create ourselves: Humans came from nature. It seems that environmentalism is a variation on a creation myth that can only be powerful by omitting the necessary destruction. What could prevent nature from destroying itself by its ordinary processes of evolution without exogenous shock? We might be able to influence the development of nature for a while, but how can we believe that we can control it? How can we believe that we can live in harmony with nature? Is that an absurdist environmentalist joke? Briefly and sincerely LC

I’m a zoology major and I want to do research in ethology. I have a hard time understanding how going vegan helps the environment when so much of what livestock eat is inedible human byproduct and/or hay and rough grasses that people can’t eat or utilize. Wouldn’t turning everyone towards plant agriculture only increase the deforestation due to the lack of usable souls to plant in? Livestock utilize the fields that humans can’t grow plants in, however I don’t agree in there being only a few types of livestock used, as anything en mass seems to produce bad effects. What if we turn to alternative meats, such as bison and venison and other prey animals, since humans evolved from omnivorous predators? I want to do what is truly best for the environment but I was in agriculture for four years and there is just so much that it misunderstood by a lot of people.
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 4 жыл бұрын
If we're just talking about cropland, 36% of global crops by calories are planted in order to feed livestock (NatGeo). When it comes to soy, the majority of all soy crops go to feed livestock (Barona 2010) instead of people. I would disagree when you say all livestock are grazed on non-arable land. The Amazon rainforest is currently being burned at record rates to make room for livestock grazing and livestock are often grazed in systems where grazers have never existed due to the massive demand for meat worldwide. It's not realistic for every family to go out and hunt prey animals, and even if it was, the human population levels would decimate ungulate populations around city centres. If you mean keeping prey animals captive bred for meat, you run into the same issues with animal feed - we use all that fertile, arable land to feed our animals and methane emissions are still high. However, grazers are still needed in many ecosystems where they naturally support the ecology of the area, so I am a huge supporter of programs that reintroduce (in the case of the bison) or increase levels of native prey animals for grazing and to feed and support healthy predator populations. However, keep in mind that this is just my opinion based on the science and there is no "scientist consensus" that says everyone should go vegan so I only speak on behalf of myself. Mic the vegan has an interesting video about this topic and cites his scientific sources throughout I recommend you check out, even if you don't agree! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9CDiqp-nJmqm58.html

Just remember, being vegan allows meat eating and wearing leather and using other animal products (road kill is not exploitation, nor natural death). Arne Naess went a lot further with deep ecology. One particular philosopher (Collier I think) even promotes even rocks have their place. The problem is us, not the rest of nature, just us. Gaia doesn't need us but we need Gaia but as part of the biodiversity, the only part we know is capable of abstract thought, we have a ';right' to exist, but we should use our consciousness to blow the myth of our supremacy out of the watter.

Deep ecology is really based on the rejection of a specific, time related medieval philosophical contextualisation of how we treat animals. very Christian and very western European, in both instances. Nobody else, either before the medieval period in Western Europe, or until now in much of the rest of the world has even bothered to consider it an issue worthy of thought. The few vegan based movements in the world had largely not touched the nascent deep ecologists in the West, through the 1960s'. It is a conceit to demand that such values are universal, rather than the result of a totally free and consetted western middle class. Animals do not afford us or other animals the same consideration or status that deep ecology demands (uniquely) humans should afford all other living entities. Would a Mother bear consider the safety and fear of a human child, should she feel her own are endangered?
