The first CogSai LIVE is this Thursday, June 7th at 11am PDT / 2pm EDT / 8pm CEST.
Sai will be talking with Dr. Wim De Neys in depth about his recent paper, Bias and conflict: A case for logical intuitions (www.wdeneys.org..., about how our intuition handles conflicts between heuristic and analytic thinking.
You can read the paper in advance, and contribute your questions or comments for Dr. De Neys at cogsai.com/q3 - either now, or live, if you tune in during the interview!
-
Sometimes a bit of philosophy of mind is very helpful to tease apart a complex phenomenon. ;-)
Also: if you want to learn how to set aside your own emotions, Buddhist "non-attachment" oriented meditation techniques are quite effective.
Cognitive science is a combo of psych, AI, philosophy, neuroscience, linguistics, anthro, sociology, and lots more. CogSai includes short illustrated explanations, live interviews with researchers, and group discussions.
This video is a collaboration between Sai and Henry Reich of / minutephysics - be sure to subscribe to his channel if you haven't already.
Be sure to share, subscribe, like & follow! Live guests will be announced on G+/FB/Twitter, so you can get your questions in early. ;-)

It seems, from the title, that there is a question on what empathy is. Usually, when one makes a video with a question as its title, the video would answer that question. The only answer we got here was "we don't know."

I'm a empathetic person, I can feel the emotions of others around. Sometimes I cant tell whether the emotions I feel are actually TRULY mine. But because I empathize with you does not mean I sympathize with you, there is a difference.
@KewlAidTime

Okay, for example; You were to fall and hurt yourself. If I were to see this I would feel your pain, I would understand and feel it. But just because I understand someone's feelings doesn't mean I sympathize with them, I wouldn't feel bad for you. It can happen in many different ways, this is just the easiest example I could think of.
@fknshaggy
@fknshaggy 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your quick reply. So by that example; you could see me fall and imagine if it happened to you, that it would hurt. But because you don't know me/care about me personally, you don't don't care about it happening to someone you don't know? (the most simple examples are usually the best!) thanks again!

Empathy is a totally subjective "Feeling". Like describing the color blue to a blind man. Quantify qualify and define your terms. It like defining Pain both Objective and Subjective, Cultural and influenced by Circumstance. Grab a handful of cloud and hang on. Willing to bet your life on your answer?

Kawaiizoey Do you know the difference between right and wrong, this right and wrong was created with empathy. I believe that everyone can have empathy, it is simply we do not notice it's full spectrum. It is taught to some, but others are born with it, without even a sliver of it. We would be no better than an animal.

+Kawaiizoey i have adhd and i dindnt understand anything! when im with people i am very agitated and cant relate to them at lowest level, but sometimes if they are positive and understanding (because people have thir own vulnerabilities too) i feel relaxed and focused, so for me the best thing to do is to sorround myself with positive people and forgive myself for rejecting other ones. second animals have empathy too and they can teach us a lott.

all my ex seems to lack empathy. they can't relate to how I feel. but I have empathy. I can understand why people do things an mimic them as well I feel what they feel . my ex's are the second one they can't relate to how I feel but they care yet they avoid situation that makes then uncomfortable.
@abbazabba4854
@abbazabba4854 6 жыл бұрын
Aisha Haidara possibly projection? Is it possible that you weren’t able to understand how your ex’s felt and the assumption was made that they were incapable of understanding you? If you truly meant ALL of your ex’s, I doubt you’re legitimately that unlucky by consistently getting into relationships with humans that have difficulty with empathy.. Ps. For the record.. I genuinely don’t understand empathy.. It’s just a word to me. I’m not a sociopath or a psychopath. I just legitimately don’t understand the concept of empathy. I don’t enjoy seeing people experience pain or suffering or get any sort of thrill from it but I can’t say I’ve ever really been altered by someone giving me their sob story.. Now if I’m in a relationship then I take pride in building my partner up as it’s a reflection of my character. It’s not about what third parties think of me but more about if I can’t make my partner happy then we likely just don’t mix or “feelings” are lacking on one side or both. I was raised my a very hypocritical narcissistic parent and I’ve been accused of having traits of someone with extremely high functioning aspergers by partners and friends mainly because of my lack of emotional response to certain situations but if anything I would say I’m just more in tune with philosophical and rational approaches to scenarios. The only medical diagnosis that has been touched on is ADHD. Or I could just be a keyboard player.. making things up as I go along to pass the boredom.. who knows these days haha almost everyone can fit into DSM-V criteria if you grasp at straws long enough. I could even just be a plain old narcissistic arse and only about 10% aware of myself:p

Hey CogSai. I was just wondering if you could do a video about dreaming or perhaps, to be more specific, lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is a marvelous phenomenon that not many people are aware about it. You could talk both about dreams and lucid dreams, but lucid dreams is a topic that could well cover the whole video. :) Just a suggestion.

Spencer, what about cultivating curiosity about a few other people? Asking questions to learn more about them and what's going on for them. Do you have a friend or colleague that you could ask to help you learn to "read" social cues more effectively? Check out this quiz on empathy greatergood.berkeley.edu/ei_quiz/

I'm afraid I don't. I plan on learning lots of this sort of stuff once I get into college. Right now I'm sort of in an in-between state between high school and college right now. Hopefully I can make a friend there. Just tried that quiz in the link, got 16/20 right. I think my main problem is just not knowing/remembering to check people's faces. I think I might be able to do it with more practice, though, so long as I don't go crazy over it.

You say people can't tell your own emotions apart from the mental reflection of someone else's emotions, right? Well, what if the solution is that there is no distinction? Since an emotion is a physical reaction to both physical and mental stimuli, the stimulus making someone feel happy could simply be the other person being happy. My suggestion could be compared to a yawn. One may yawn when they feel tired, but seeing someone else yawn also makes you feel like you need to yawn, and so you do.

It's totally ok, I didn't know most of this before recently! Well, suppose we try to normalize pedophilia. A child is groomed into being sexually and emotionally connected 'in love with' an adult. The child is fully consenting, is perhaps more mature than they should be at their age. If the child wants to have sex with the adult and there are no immediate repercussions because everyone around them is 'all right' with the behaviour, then stopping them from being 'in love' would be the 'mean' thing to do, since it would mean that you have no empathy for the situation. Your reasoning would cloud the emotions that are happening. The removal of taboos is the first step toward normalizing a certain behaviour. Look at hardcore feminists, they walk around half naked because they want to normalize nudity, which is a savage-type behaviour that rejects patriarchy, order and civilization. Basically the matriarchy that the left is trying to build is based is human contracts instead of a communal morality; they call is secular humanism. I think it's a cult, but I believe in objective morality, and I'm a Christian so I have a bit of a bias. Personally, as much as I empathize with already-existing behaviours, I am allowed to reject them from being normal. I don't think homosexuality, for example of something that is in the process of being normalized in the West, is normal or healthy. I think homosexuality is childish and lustful, and I don't think it should be normalized, but I don't think it should be demonized either, like they demonize homosexuals in the middle east. The middle east can be seen as a barbaric patriarchy, but they weren't always like that! The West is in chaos right now, the feminization of white men is bringing out great civilizations down. I don't like it because I wouldn't want Europe to become savage. Anyway, if you want to know more, right now the people who are discussing this are Neoreactionaries and Anarcho-Capitalists. Look up some blogs, it's very interesting! Thanks for hearing me out, I appreciate it! :) Good luck!!

Empathy is a great skill to have since it will you help you build relationships with people. Wouldn't you want that? Be able to make friends wherever you go? And don't think that you're being judged, no. You're being criticized for your lack of empathy which is totally different

it come down to emotional intelligence. it skill that leaned. my theory why alot asperger people struggle to empathize correctly deals sensory issues and understanding emotions. though they have easy time understanding emotions in other people with as in mbti you have inverted functions and extravert functions. when human brain get sensory over load go into invert function loop. this cause a delay in development of the extravert functions. aspergers people have usually get point that hard to tell they have once they reach there 20s. Since am dyslexic had poor social skills when I was growing up. with me I build models in my head how people act and feel. Understand how I feel when thing happen to me and understand different emotional states has help refine my model. I general feel other people emotions weakly.

BoolWithMyTool thats not how psychopathy works... Most psychopaths are actually successful business owners, CEOs, and celebrities - Also psychopathy isn't something bad and its not something gained either, its actually a brain hardwire rather then a softwire and isn't a medical term or a media one, the real term is anti-social personality disorder, which again is usually a hardwire.
