I didn't know that you could tweak the power of the engine aside from fuel mixes. I thought it was just about applying certain pressure on the pedal but there's a lot more to it! Please continue to make complicated stuff easy for us people. :)

Actually, in order to optimize energy saving against lap time, the ECU can control the torque delivered if maximum torque is requested by the driver (100% throttle). Furthermore, the torque is controlled by deciding on the torque split between MGU-K and ICE. There are several papers on that topic. So engine mapping is only 1 part of the equation with the current powertrain architecture

Could you explain the limit that Renault gave Red Bull for their “Engine mode” on the engine near the end of the race? (Japan GP) It was on radio, when Max was behind Bottas? Is it regulated by the sport, the team, or the engine manufacturer? 🤔
@H18136
@H18136 5 жыл бұрын
Renault will effectively tell the teams it supplies "you can put this many minutes on this engine on setting 7 and this many on setting 5. More than that and you run the risk of it failing and your race is over". It's advice from the engine manufacturer, but as a team you don't /need/ to adhere to it - it's not a rule that is enforced by anyone - just some advice from the people who build the power unit.
@pkscarr
@pkscarr 5 жыл бұрын
basically ^ this. F1 engines are very precisly engineered for both power and weight saving, and just like your own road cars components will fail faster when driven too hard for long periods of time. This means that the engines reliability across a race weekend can often only be estimated, and the manufacturers give guidelines to the teams using their engines as to how long you can run an aggressively push an engine before it's risk of faliure becomes too high. The current rule limits on how many engines you can use per season as well really push the teams to follow these guidelines and conserve the engines as much as possible.

As I understand it it's more related to the interplay of the Hybrid drive unit, fuel mixes and ignition timing - things more managed by the ECU than necessarily related to throttle response.
@rjfaber1991
@rjfaber1991 5 жыл бұрын
What such a mode is will depend on what the ECU is programmed like, but generally speaking, such a mode will push way more fuel through the engine than would be sustainable for an entire race given current fuel limitations, and most likely also completely drain the battery without bothering to charge it up again as you normally would. How exactly it directs the MGU-H I wouldn't know, and it is an interesting one, because there will be a sweet spot in using the electric energy, between driving the turbo to eliminate lag and making the combustion engine work as well as possible, and driving the wheels directly.
@rjfaber1991

+ISLAMATRON - I know there's a 100kg/h limit on fuel flow at any moment, but I think you'll find that if you try to push 100kg/h through the engine at all times, you'll get nowhere near the chequered flag in most grands prix, hence why I said fuel flow was higher than would be sustainable for an entire race...

Hey chain bear 👋 Another very interesting video, thank you for your time and effort. In this video I had a first time of confusion while your explanations. @0:30 your drawing displays a throttle with arrows from the fuel tank to the engine. The combustion engine in f1 has direct injection, hasn't it? Wouldn't it be more precise if the throttle only controls the input air as the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders? Even in the audio you state the throttle controls air _and fuel _...? PS: never mind, you said "way back in time" overheard it, sorry 🙏.

Dont know about F1 Cars, but in a normal car it is air Filter > throttle flap > carburetor. This the line to the fuel tank is connected to the carburetor and fuel doesn’t hit the throttle flap, as ist enters the air later.

While this basics are correct, the idea that the most torque is being produced at the greatest rpm is not right. Most engines don't work that way. This is why you have a torque/power band graph. The power band will usually cross the torque line twice. Once at the beginning of the power band's optimal low rpm output and again as the power band peaks out and output starts to fall. Usually, the tachometer is calibrated to red line shortly after the power band peaks because now you are over-revving the engine and this can cause damage.

Good video. But I think they don't have a throttle valve anymore as even a fully open one has a drag. I think they control the torque by the MGU-H as a throttle and a very low fuel mixture as they don't have enough fuel to slow down the engine by too much fuel.

@rjfaber1991

I should imagine they do, yes. They could get away with just making the pit lane button a speed limiter, but any engine manufacturer worth their salt will try to incorporate some sort of engine mapping there that finds a balance between using as little fuel as possible while in pit lane, while keeping engine temperatures within the window, and the throttle response sharp enough for a quick getaway from the pit box.

I guess if you have to fuel save, you could put up a map that maxes out at 80% Torque by 100% throttle.
@rjfaber1991
@rjfaber1991 5 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, they can do that, and the rule basically just means that the highest point in the torque curve needs to be reached when the throttle is fully down, so it's not "100% torque" as such, it's just to make sure there is a certain linearity in the torque curve, and it doesn't have peaks and dips in places where the teams might otherwise want them. Then again, unlike a diesel engine, which has a massive early torque spike and then drops off, a petrol engine will always tend to have higher torque at higher throttle inputs unless the mapping is messed with very significantly, so this could also just be a way for the FIA to guarantee "natural" behaviour of the engine.

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race - I don’t remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

I think you mix torque with power. Max torque is never() at max rpm, or even in the higher regions of rpm, it's way before. Sure f1 engines will be tuned for high rpm(intake runner lenght), but still, it's max power in the higher rpm, not torque. Fuel injection(s) per (2) revolution(s) will be higher in lower max torque rpms, then at higher rpms...
