Brockwood Park 1980 - Question #9 from Question and Answer Meeting #2
'What is freedom?'
This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'
We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.
Our videos contain thousands of subtitles in more than 25 languages, translated by volunteers from all over the world. If you would like to help us with translating subtitles, please contact us at digital@kfoundation.org

I was asked this question in 9th grade by one of my favorite teachers of all time. The question was, what is freedom. Followed by what is the definition of freedom, and was there more freedom before or after the enlightenment. At first I was astounded by the question, by its complexity and its potential of alternative thinking and the depth of it. I have come to the conclusion that there are 4 different definitions to what freedom is. P.S: Definitions 1 and 2 are more philosophical and depend on the own individuals interpretation, while 3 and 4 are more statistical (if that makes sense). 1.) Freedom of state of mind 2.) Freedom to separate from your ego. 3 and 4 are joint definitions, I will make this easy to understand by using an example. 3.) Freedom to act upon will. 4.) Freedom of government Example: Lets say I walked up and stabbed you, I had the freedom to stab you and you got stabbed. That was my freedom to act upon will. Now freedom of government is lets say I stabbed you and now you have the freedom for the government to come after the stabber. (You can re-read that a couple times to get it) But all in all definitions 3 and 4 can fluctuate depending on the individuals situation. If you live in a developed country you have more freedom of government, while if you live in Somalia in eastern Africa, where there is no central government, there is less freedom of government. This is my feeling on what freedom is, please I would like to hear feedback, negative or positive. - Oliver Dean Govrik

I feel your first definition is the most apt; (in my opinion) the concept of freedom is not something created, but just described by man, just like the breeze or storm is not created by man. So freedom cannot be understood from the perspective of human creation, e.g. attacking someone with a knife. It is human, therefore it cannot be used to define freedom, because freedom transcends it. So the ideal definition of freedom cannot be in any way related to society, law, etiquette, and so on, since these are human; I would say that freedom, then, is the environment, internal or external, that allows life to just be the way it is; a woman to be a woman, a bird to be a bird and without discrimination or judgement of any kind

If you are happy to live in a “free country,” are you really free? To be conscious that you are “free” is to also be inevitably afraid of losing that freedom, and then the internal joy of being “free” is replaced by a wariness and suspicion - fear! Thus, such “bliss” - which is based on an excellent outward situation or condition - can turn to “piss.” 🙀. Only if there is a inner peace underlying the outer joy does this problem fail to destroy joy.

A friend mentioned freedom in a FB post today and I can see exactly where they are coming from, but what exactly is it? Freedom from pain is an absence of pain, freedom from violence and anger means that violence and anger are absent from your situation, but do we really want freedom? Or do we want connection with the world around us that is free from fear, free from violence and free from exploitation? We are all cogs in the machine and me buying a cheaper product because I don’t have much money to spend probably means the people who made the product worked in worse conditions for lower wages; which makes me responsible for their situation to some degree at least.

you are right, not everyone is free, definitely not the people living in substandard conditions. could slaves in ancient times be free, using any wisdom ? I think all of this only applies to people who have limited themselves psychologically. what I got from the video was that, if we can clearly see what is up to us, and what isn't, then that clarity removes the dilemma of choice. its like realizing free to do what you can do by coming to terms with one's situation. but that doesn't make sense. because sometimes we want things to change, and not everyone has the energy and resources to do it. the conclusion I came to eventually was that, when a human decides to birth another human, like you stated, they become a cog, and people can only be as free as their circumstances allow them.

李德志 Freedom: the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without external (and internal) hindrance or restraint. Right: An abstract idea of that which is due to a person or governmental body by law or tradition or nature. What Krishnamurti means by freedom is: the ability to observe beings and non beings as they are freshly and anew. That can done only by understanding the movement of the self and that understanding is itself the factor which brings about freedom.

+李德志 When freedom becomes taking liberties then it becomes wrong and becomes oppression to another. However, right and wrong in the context of these discussions are better labeled wholesome and fragmented. The usual nuances of Identified 'right' vs 'wrong' creates a lot of neurosis in the human psyche.

He says watch all the disorder and confusion and stuff to get free . But this is not true. First of all when you watch you use your thoughts. When you use your thoughts you choose a thought. Based on himself when their exist choices there exist no freedom because there exist conflict. So, whatever one does one will not get free, just based on the same line of reasoning.

You can attend without thinking. Attention is not thought, it’s prior to thought. Sit somewhere and just observe anything from your breath to whatever you’re listening happening around, smelling, seeing or observe your current emotional state. Do this without describing inwardly anything, no inner speech, not labelling, not judging, no reaction at all. Just let your senses do their job and don’t interfere. You’ll see that even your thoughts pass by just like cars or birds do. Attention is not thought.

Freedom is an illusion in a selfish world, you want freedom? What's the cost? You might think you have it but do you really? Just because you can make you're own decisions you think you're free? You're still bound by your own faults. That's where it starts your own sinful nature is where the curse of freedom lies, sure you're free… free to get back up when you fall down but who said you could walk forward? Or a better question is what's stopping you?
