'Gamma' is a rather confusing word that appears in setting up monitors and other devices. It also appears in photo editing functions. Here's a simple description that concludes it's much like 'curves' and is largely about mid-tone adjustment.
Functions using this in the excellent Affinity Photo are shown. The principle of Gamma, however, is universal.

Thank you for this very clear explanation. It combined a nicely detailed component (graphs) with a simple take home message (think of it as midtones). I previously could see what gamma changes did to my images, but really didn't understand how the control related to other tools.

I have gone back to all your videos rewatching them one by one and taking notes. While there were no notes for me for this one, I just want to say how much I appreciate your explaining gamma. You physical explanations help to make me remember all the knobs etc. Once I realized you were talking about a non-linear process (think amplifier) and that gamma was nothing more than a knob to help linearize the transformation algorithm from input to output, it now makes perfect sense. the fact that it focuses on the mid tones also helps to bound the practical limits. So, now for my request. I want a way to select what I call red. And I've been playing with a crude method to use HSL and the wheel to bound what I want as red, Then I change the color to something, do a merge visible, then select that something and make a mask. Of course the something has to be a unique color, etc so as not to be picked up when I ultimately make a mask. I'm looking for a way to use the HSL wheel to make a selection. Pls comment.

I am a computer programmer, and have math training, and I didn't know that the gamma value was the actual exponent. Thanks for explaining that.

Been a home cinema enthusiast for decades. I've played around with gamma and run calibrations but never really got it. Your explanation is the best I've seen because I'm a visual learner. Thanks so much. Typing this while my TV's running a 3D LUT to calibrate my colour :)

One way is to use gamma in levels to tweak mid-tone contrast. Otherwise, this video is just to inform the curious what the word means. Not knowing things like this bugs me, and maybe others too.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. Some lights when off in my head during your presentation. For example: I shoot and produce short videos but have been struggling with shooting in log … until very recently. I really feel I’m close to perfection in replicating real world colors. The software I use allows for me to choose Canon Log 3 which is the input color space. It also allows for me to choose the monitor color space which I normally have set to Rec709 gamma 2.4. Now, all that said, I find that I must reduce gamma of the input (what the program calls the timeline color space) by just -0.04. So, based on your presentation, is this really a resultant gamma of (drumroll please) 2.4-0.04=2.36? Or, am I too nerdy? The video clips are just too bright if I leave the gamma adjustment at zero. When I pull it down as stated, everything looks spot on perfect.

Oh, one last point: I cannot just reduce my exposure by like 1/3 of a stop. No, that will darken the entire image. I tried other methods in post to correct the clips and lowering gamma seems to be the perfect choice.

I am studying a media and my teacher said that Gamma refers to the luminance of light, and that Luma was a seperate term which refers to the levels of light. It sounded reasonable when my teacher explained it. now i have started researching I assume that Luma is short for luminance and i am struggling to understand the difference between luma and gamma. can someone please take a read and try to explain this for me simply.

Yes, it's confusing! There are lots of explanations out there. Broadly, it seems luma is about light and dark in an image, while gamma is a correction (ie they are completely different). Hence you get descriptions such as 'Luma is the weighted sum of RGB gamma corrected components, but luminance is the weighted sum of RGB linear components.'

Dave if I send you an image could you do a video in a specific topic. Example overblown sky but it's not rectangular so can't use gradients. Irregular shape.

I am part of an interesting discussion around color picker calculations and display scaling calculations in Darktable... As an aside I went in to Affinity and it too seems to not calculate pixel values correctly. The premise is a checkerboard image of two colors is used... at 1 to 1 each square is visible as you zoom out there is necessary scaling of the display.. The two colors if averaged as you would with the picker and to some extent some display scaling should result in a light green if the calculations are done by conveting the values to linear srgb doing the average and then converting it back to display coded srbg. It seems the posted suggest that is what should happen but that many software programs and it would look like affininty included does the average in with gamma so that the resulting color is a dark rose and not a green.... As a math guy I would be interested in your take... The png file and discussion is provided in this thread... github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/12310
