@Family History Fanatics I did the 23 test a few years ago and I figured I would easily be able to sort out my family tree based on the surnames but that’s not the case. My mom is gentile and my father ( supposedly) is Jewish but I don’t see any Jewish names at all on either side. I am female so there is limited information. I asked my mom if she was sure if he was my real father and she says yes. I’m not sure what to do now because this doesn’t make sense to me. Thanks

I am on two Databases; 23andme & Ancestry. Their results are identical except for a slight difference in the percentage in a few regions, but the top 3 are almost the same. They both picked up same top 3 regions.

Thank you for the info in your video. I can tell you why I haven't uploaded my MyHeritage dna to Gedmatch. I took a 23andme test first and submitted it to promethease to get my health risks back when it was $5 each time you updated. MyHeritage came along and bought them and my DNA but offered me a 3 mo subscription. Meanwhile I took an Anxestry dna test. Both Ancestry and 23andme have my ethnicity pretty close to what we know in our family. MyHeritage is way out in left field with me having more Italian ancestry than my father had. My other company tests match up with my sisters and a brother who have all tested on Ancestry and/or 23andMe. And no, Mom didn't have an affair, I am very closely related to my dad's sister's children who have the appropriate amount of Italian too. MyHeritage goofed and I don't trust their accuracy.

Ancestry is over-represented perhaps because Gedmatch does things Ancestry doesn't do like showing lower shared matches than 20cM and giving chromosome information. I think MyHeritage is under-represented because they do show chromosome information and chromosome browser, so there's no need to use Gedmatch to find those features. I was glad that you can also upload Ancestry DNA data onto MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA because they have different tools and you can use them without having to do another DNA test! (And find more matches, hopefully close ones, that were not on Ancestry) As your other video explained, all the different companies have their advantages and disadvantages, so being on several of them helps if you're trying to work out how groups of matches relate or which ancestors each segment of chromosomes came from.

All these GEDmatch videos are going to have to be updated soon to account for the fact that they have moved everything over to Genesis... where there isn't the handy A, T, M, and H thing. Also, any new kits uploaded are only uploaded on Genesis now. I just added two new kits, and I couldn't upload them on regular GEDmatch.
@NiamhCreates

One reason MyHeritage might be underrepresented... a lot of MyHeritage's kits were actually uploaded from other companies (Ancestry and 23andMe users, typically). I manage about 10 kits on MyHeritage, but none of them were taken at MyH... they were uploaded kits from Ancestry or 23andMe. I think that's where MyH got a lot of their user numbers/growth from. Of course, all those kits I manage are on GEDmatch (and Genesis) too... but they aren't listed as being from MyH.

Well, I think one thing that could effect MyHeritage at least is that at least part of their database is upload from other companies. So for me while my data is in their database if comes from Ancestry and that is also where my GedMatch data comes from. And while Ancestry's marketing has been geared towards the casual test taker in a way that marketing has been favorable for people like me to get more of my family tested because of those ads and then I can use that large database for cousin matching and then upload their data to GedMatch and Myheritage to take advantage of those companies tools. Ancestry's may look overinflated because people will test there first since they cannot upload to there and then transfer to other companies who do allow that. It doesn't really explain why 23 and me is so low other than their database is geared towards medical and not genealogy.

That's a far point. However, what if you have DNA matches that aren't on Ancestry? You could be missing out on connecting with them. In fact, you likely won't have to do much of the research if you migrate your DNA to MyHeritage and Family Tree DNA. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jsCWeZSb2t-skn0.html

@@hamdogalmighty4041 There are issues with 23andme because of the part of your DNA they target, they focus a lot on medically-relevant parts (SNPs), so in GenesisGEDMATCH 23andme matches show as an overlap, because GenesisGEDMATCH needs to account for the disparity. Unless you (your DNA) want to participate in research and find out about your traits and medical stuff, don't test with 23andme. If you look just for genealogy, test with ancestry and then upload your DNA to the rest of the companies. What you wanna look for is how many SNPs a company tests? The more the better.

The sample size of 20 000+ was good, but when it is only your matches, will that really be representative for the different companies, making it possible to make those conclusions you did? Ancestry has the best Tree apparatus. That's why.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics Жыл бұрын
Does it really? First, the Ancestry ThruLines isn't always accurate. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7aEedJl3s6ZhHU.html Second, without a chromosome browser that compares specific segments of DNA (not the chromosome ethnicity painting they've made), one can not be confident that their triangulations with DNA cousin matches are accurate. Granted, the platform has other advantages but best tree apparatus is subjective. It's it easy to understand compared to GEDmatch. Yes. But does it cause more confusion and inaccurate conclusions with their results? Yes. Is GEDmatch confusing to learn? Yes Are the results more accurate with their DNA match comparison tools? Yes.

So how many snps does each company test for? Which company has the highest amount of snps tested ? So that way that raw file will probably be the biggest as well? Because I took a 23andme test the $199 version and uploaded my raw file to my heritage can I take ancestry dna as welll and have two raw files uploaded to my heritage? Or does my heritage accept only one raw file per account? Because I'm wondering if I upload two raw files to my heritage then my heritage will have now the highest amount of my snps tested right??? Or am I thinking about this all wrong?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

They all test around 600,000 SNPs. MyHeritage will allow you to upload multiple raw files. The higher amount of SNPs will not necessarily give you better results because each company has their algorithm tied to their own SNP set.

what does GEDMatch tell you that ancestry does not?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics Жыл бұрын
Great question: 1. GEDmatch helps you validate your DNA triangulation since it shows you where you match on each chromosome. With Ancestry, you have to assume you triangulate with your matches because they don't reveal that data. And good genealogists, never assume anything. 2. In GEDmatch, the goal is to help you match with others who have tested with a company other than Ancestry. In other words, it's a resource for anyone who has tested with MyHeritage, Ancestry, Living DNA, Family Tree DNA, or 23andMe to match without having to test with each website.
