I'm really sorry guys but I strongly suggest you watch this video here: instagram.com/kiwicfruit/ Title is the same: What is Genuine? Please watch it through my IGTV, it is more complete and unedited unlike this one. Insta: @kiwicfruit There are several clips from this video that was removed by KZfaq because they think it's copyrighted. Not only have I blurred the clips, I have even added a voice narration, music and even layers. This is expected from KZfaq and this has been an issue not only for me but for many other similar small channels as well. It is really unfair and disappointing from KZfaq, they chose to block my video but still allow other big channels that post non-edited and trimmed Oregairu clips straight from the episodes on KZfaq. I still can't comprehend why channels like that still exist while videos like mine and others gets removed and blocked brutally. Thanks again for your support! I am grateful for everyone that has supported my work since the very beginning. :) [Updated Announcement 6/2/2022] It seems that KZfaq have ruined this video completely. After forcing me to remove copyrighted clips on the date of upload and shortened the video by 2 minutes, they have magically returned back today. Unfortunately, the audio is still the trimmed version. I'm really sorry to those who noticed the poor sync of the audio. It happened so sudden and it's really frustrating. I will find a solution to this soon. [Updated Announcement 6/3/2022] The video has returned to normal! Really glad that everything is okay now. The subtitles, clip and audio are all in sync. Hope it will remain like this. ;)

I think they simply bypass the cp detector. That is, change the clips in a way that seem different enough to a program doing it, but not to human viewers. EmperorLemon made a video about the whole KZfaq “copyright metagame” and I think he gives concrete suggestions on how clips can be changed to bypass it. So I suggest you check that out if you care.

Seeing his story through the lense of the literature he based his works upon (which I didn´t know because I held off on reading the LN) gives such a great perspective onto what is being shown and how it plays out. Very well done.

Thank you for such an important video to watch. Not just because you helped to understand Oregairu concept much better (many do that), but for using the books references too. I'm so happy I only recently discovered this anime and didn't wait 5 years for the next season to arrive because I was immediately hooked after season 1. I finished this anime literally yesterday. I have seen a lot of animes in my lifetime and hands down this series has become one of my favorite animes of all time. It's at least in my top 20 of favorite animes of all time. I thought it was so well done and I completely related with these characters. It's a masterpiece in my opinion.

Thanks for this video. I watched anime and thought that there must be deeper meaning behind "Genuine". I read vol 1-7 of LN. It brought me so much insight about this series. When I tried to read the rest, season 3 was announced so I hold back. Because I really want to see it in anime format. After s3 ended, I felt satisfied but anime didn't gave me full answer to "Genuine" so here I am.

Thank you and well said! Yeah I agree with you on S3 and I actually did the same thing as you. I didn't finish volumes 12-14 because I wanted to watch it in anime format. I had some problems with S3 because there were several inconsistencies like animation, directing, etc. S3 also focused too much on Yui which was very different than the LN. Reading the LN definitely gives so much insights and I completely agree with you

Amazing video, but considering its a analisis and all of the sources, I think mentioning yui's character construction would be a great add. Don't know if its just me but it seems that some people overlook her character development as her just being the good girl with unmatched feelings, even when its quite clear each one of the characters are much more complex then what it appears to be. (Srry for the errors)
@kiwicfruit
@kiwicfruit 2 жыл бұрын
That's true. I also mentioned in the description that I failed to touch on Yuigahama, Hayama and Haruno in this video. Yeah, I agree that she is definitely more than just a "nice girl" character. I actually like her as a character in s1-s2 and especially the LN. I love it when she still chose to be friends with Yukino in S1 after being roasted verbally for her bad baking skills. Yui is definitely not a dull character in contrast to the stereotypical "big titty, short haired and obsessed with main character" girl in most romcom anime. In my opinion though, I don't like how she was treated in S3 and the New LNs. I know that it's probably to earn more money for the publisher and author, especially covid times, I still think the Yui in s1-2 and the original LNs is better.

@@kiwicfruit oh I forgot to check that. But i agree she wasn't treated right on S3 which I found kinda annoying especially when hikigaya didn't even thought for a sec about her, she was just leaved aside. @kiwicfruit

@@b0t3141 The LN stands for light novel which is kinda like novels for anime. They are mostly not as thick and lengthy as novels, though they can be sometimes. OreGairu is originally a light novel and there is a total of 14 volumes. Recently, there was a new one called Shin light novels which continues the story after Yukino and 8man got together. Many people and myself are not a huge fan of the new novels, but the original 14 volumes are amazing. You should definitely read them!

Beautiful theory about an ugly fact. The genuine scene in Oregairu (at least in the anime only) is actually very fact based and pragmatic. Hachiman agrees to help Iroha informally outside of the Service Club. They are going to co-host the Christmas Party with Kaihin HS, and they both attend planning meetings with Kaihin student council lead by pres Tamanawa. Nothing gets done and they are fast approaching the party date. For some reason, Hachiman is unable to get focus on Tamanawa so he returns to the Service Club and asks Yukino and Yui for help. This causes Hachiman grave embarrassment as we see later that night, that he had to ask for help and admit he could not handle the situation like he had thought. He has to reveal a vulnerability in himself which is the beginning of actual genuineness. Yukino and Yui agree to help after some shock and struggle when Yui pleads with Yukino not to reject this moment which would be a rejection of Hachiman's attempt at genuineness. And of course, Yukino attends the meeting with Kaihin, listens to nonsense for a few moments and then lays waste to the room taking no prisoners, explaining how they are wasting time, and she gets the planning back on track for a successful party. Everything which you brilliantly summarize in your review, and which I found enlightening and beautiful, arise out of this ugly fact, that Hachiman is forced to ask for help. I am very glad to see that there is someone who sees Oregairu as more than just a Rom-Com. Oregairu is as you state, a very profound statement of the human condition as viewed through a High School Romance. Thanks for the uplifting vision and sentiment.

Yes that's the simple answer but not just any bonds. Bonds takes time, patience and dedication, but most importantly the struggles and pain of being together with someone. It also means not idealising the other person and accept them for who they are. e.g. Hachiman realises later that Yukino is not this cold, independent strong girl who never lies, but someone who is also indecisive, needs help and capable of lying just like everyone else.

Yukino and Hikigaya's relationship is the basis of oregairu. Nevertheless, their couple is not genuine. It only demonstrates the main meaning of the anime
@mijaelmarcelovillarroelchu6513
@mijaelmarcelovillarroelchu6513 4 ай бұрын
A bit long, but I'd like to share my thoughts here as well: What I see here in this episode when I watched this was more of a total recognition of Hachiman and Yukino as "human beings" interwoven from one another, rather than as mere "individuals" having such fictitious relationships (more of a subject-object relation, not directed to them, but to the situation they are into). It is, in the very sense, that both of them understood the weight of their existences in each other, not merely because of needing each other just for the sake of 'saving each other from their own mess', but more of this person has shaped their respective individualities. With the two of them realizing they have the least time left before their high school lives are over, they are scrambling to convey what they should; however, given their respective situations (and being socially inept in expressing their feelings) it turned to be difficult in expressing their genuine selves. Hachiman himself knew that his search for a genuine relationship has come to an end: it just requires him to convey them in a way that he speaks thru his own heart and mind, both in sync. (Even the episode title says it all, "Our feelings are conveyed through only the warmth of our touch" - the anime gave justice to what has been long awaited for the past 8 years: Hachiman and Yukino admitting to themselves that they long for each other's existence, despite the differences) Though the striking difference indeed is present both in the LN and the anime, what makes them unique from each other is that both of them employs the power of imagination through the human creative mind. For the LN, it is the monologues that let us be immersed in the thoughts of Hachiman and Yukino in their respective shoes, mulling over such thoughts in a situation you are having a hard time expressing yourself with. The anime, on the other hand, exercises the aesthetic tendencies to deliver explicitly and implicitly what was found in the source material, whether visual shift, colors or even the camera leveling. All in all, what the three main characters wanted are also the things we wanted: genuine relationships while forming our own identities. In a world wherein everything can be just easily fabricated, we seek those who we consider to be part of our genuine growth in search of our individuality. Though we shape our own paths, we all know to ourselves how others can contribute also to our own growth, and likewise take shape as well in the path that we will take. Replay Value, I really appreciate the fact that you were able to raise the subtext to a level that an ordinary viewer (or reader, if he/she looks in the LN) can understand simply. I admire your work and the passion to give a thoughtful analysis in the episodes, characters and even the whole setup of the show. I'm a university instructor today (I was still a HS student when the first show was aired), and I can say that I always recommend the show to my students because it truly reflects our nature as human beings. I'd recommend as well in the upcoming term your analysis for them to have a good context in understanding the show. Many thanks for your hardwork!

Deserves a better title honestly. You’re covering a novel topic but on the surface it just seems like another Oregairu analysis video. Maybe consider changing the title to something like “what is genuine? Analysis of literature in Oregairu” Also unsure if I understood the ending part entirely. How does everyone being highly flawed and/or a hypocrite relate to finding the “special other”? To me they seem like two unrelated observations.
@kiwicfruit
@kiwicfruit 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for your comment, and yes I believe it is indeed a novel/new topic in analysing OreGairu. To answer you first question about the title, haha that's the whole point of my video! It looks like a typical OreGairu video prima facie, but the analysis goes further into analysing the referenced literature in the entire series. To be honest, I think "What is Genuine" sounds nicer, simpler and short so that's why I did not go for the title you suggested. I also don't want it to be exclusively a "literature analysis" video, rather it is the method of analysis that I use for anime or mangas. The main argument is that the confusion about OreGairu could be best cleared up by analysing the referenced literature, and I argue that this works well for most anime/manga/light novels or any products of popular culture. Maybe I'll consider changing it in the future, let's see... Your confusion was perfectly understandable because the answer to your question has sadly been trimmed out by KZfaq's copyright system. This video was supposed to be 12 minutes. However, I do have the full original version of this video on my instagram @kiwicfruit under the same title in the IGTV section: instagram.com/kiwicfruit/ (I am on private account at the moment so please let me know what's your acc name so that I can accept your follow request). Nevertheless, I will cover all of the trimmed out content in the following paragraphs and answer your doubts. To answer your second question, what I meant was that we should recognise that everyone is flawed and hypocritical including ourselves and those close to us. I think this is the reason why Watari Wataru (author of OreGairu) referenced Osamu Dazai and Natsume Sōseki. In both of their novels that I've mentioned, the main character could not see that they themselves were the very same thing that they despised. I think the main characters refused to believe that they are also the same, the same hypocritical, superficial and flawed people that they had despised. Likewise, Hachiman's cynical stance towards society excluded himself and Yukino in the picture, this is actually the reason why one can never be a 100% cynical subject. Hachiman criticised Hayama's group for being superficial, hypocritical and flawed (SHF), but his own group (Yukino & Yui) and himself are equally SHF. This brings back to one of the most overlooked thesis in OreGairu, "We only see what we want to see, and we hear what we want to hear". This leads to your final question about finding the "special other". In both Season 1 and early volumes of the Light novel, 8man perceived Yukino as this "always speak the truth and never lies" girl. He saw Yukino as a person who does not sugar coat her words to satisfy the status quo, she brutally speaks the harsh truth. This matches 8man's pseudo-cynical standpoint, so he likes Yukino for this reason. However, he does not like the "actual" Yukino, just an "ideal" image of her who never lies. However, we discovered that she actually lied. For instance, Yukino pretended to not know about the horrible car crash which made 8man a loner in the first place. When she first met 8man in episode of season 1, Yukino perfectly knows who 8man is. Yet, she acted as if she had just met him for the very first time. Nevertheless, the shattering of the false image of Yukino enabled 8man to see Yukino for who she really is. True love according to Oregairu is thus, loving the imperfections of the other. True love is neither loving the ideal partner, nor a compensation for that ideal partner. On the contrary, it's about seeing the imperfections of a person as perfect. The imperfections of that person is what renders them perfect. Therefore, recognising that everyone is flawed including ourselves and finding the "special other" is related. There is no "ideal" person, there is no such person. All there is are people with their imperfections and flaws. I hope this answers your question, but if you want to clarify further you can ask a follow-up question. I'm sorry I can't give you a clearer and concrete explanation. Please excuse my knowledge on OreGairu at the moment because it has been quite a long time since it has ended, and I'm currently working on other stuff. However, thanks once again for your comment and I'm grateful that you want to clarify further!

@@kiwicfruit I don't use instagram or have an account there. I know some people that do but mediating all of that would be kind of a big hassle and I don't think it's honestly necessary for the discussion here. You could try putting up a torrent, but, again, only if you think it'd be worth the effort. As for the main point: if I understand you correctly, you're saying that in order to find 'the genuine,' an intrinsic good of companionship most people want/strive for. One has to accept that the other which will fulfill it will unavoidably be imperfect, and fall short of any initial idealizations we may have of them. And only once that is accepted can the relationship properly begin and be fulfilling. Is that correct? > this is actually the reason why one can never be a 100% cynical subject Because they'll always have to exclude themselves? > the horrible car crash which made 8man a loner in the first place Would also just like to comment on this. I've heard this take before, and I'm not entirely sure about it myself. Ep 1 and some other ones in s1 seems to imply that Hachiman has negative views on "normal people" because of his middle school experiences. I might have to rewatch the series to see if there's implications of him specifically looking forward to meeting people in HS. But even if that was the case, why would he be mad at the normies once he comes back? For not automatically being drawn towards him? I'm just not sure it makes sense without assuming that he already has the negative views as a result of his past (before starting HS). > True love according to Oregairu is thus, loving the imperfections of the other Are you implying in this paragraph that the other is loved despite of their imperfections or because of them? I can understand if it's the former, but I'm unsure if it's the latter. That is, how flaws can be lovable (significant ones anyway)?

@@2tehnik Hey man sorry for the really late reply. I just finished my semester. I'm thinking of uploading the complete video to a google drive and share the link in my pinned comment. Anyway, to answer your questions... For your first comment, yes that is what I meant about finding a genuine relationship. As for cynicism, there is a theoretical explanation for this one which might not be related to OreGairu but I think it is applicable as well. Sorry if this will sound very dry and technical. The reason why one cannot be a complete cynical subject can be explained by the theory of Commodity Fetishism by Karl Marx. This is thanks to the philosophers Peter Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek in pointing out and further developing this concept. The theory argues that belief functions socially in our actions, not individually or subjectively. For instance, 8man might claim that he is a cynic and that he can see through the superficial interactions of high school friendships. In addition, he claims in his monologues that he would never fall for kind acts from girls such as Yuigahama. Yet we can see that in his actions he actually doesn't really believe in cynicism. On the contrary, his actions have countlessly revealed that he still cares for other people, he still helps people, he still falls for kind acts, etc. Therefore, belief does not work subjectively "I am a cynic", rather belief functions in our practice and actions. e.g. in the things we do. This is the best explanation so far I can provide regarding why one can never be a 100% cynical subject. To address your section question on "normal people". haha I really apologise for this because there are numerous poor translations for the OreGairu anime, manga and light novels (the free pdf ones online made by fans). Many of the original Japanese dialogues in OreGairu have been translated incorrectly, you will always see this in anime sites like gogoanime, etc. The best way is to either study a bit of Japanese or purchase the official English publications of the light novels (It's up to volume 11 I believe, more will come out soon). The word normies or better known as riajuu リア充 comes from two words. It is a combination of the word riaru リアル and jyujitsu 充実. The former means real like in English, the latter means satisfied & plentiful. I think 充実 is best interpreted as conformist: a person who satisfies the status quo. I think riajuus are universal because there were riajuus too in my own high school. I also think riajuus can be extended to the workplace and adult life too. Season 1 and Volume 1 of OreGairu begins with the topic of social hierarchies in high school. He despises how the riajuus are the ones at the top and dominates the classroom, while the rest just follow them as they're afraid of being left out or bullied. Although 8man might sound pretentious and edgy, I think he is correct in pointing this out. In contrast to numerous teenage romcom anime, OreGairu shows the harsh reality of what high school really is about: bullying, ostracisation, gossips, etc. A typical high school group would never stand up for their friends. When a problem occurs, they would keep avoiding the problem and pretend as if nothing is wrong. I think 8man saw how high school people treat other people as a means to an end, as mere Things not Persons. 8man changed to a different high school to restart his entire school life, but the car accident ruined everything since he wasn't there for the first week of school. I think 8man just doesn't like the way normies treat people, I'm sorry if this isn't a satisfying explanation. This is evident throughout S1 about Sagami, summer camp arc, Hayama, etc. I will also need to study more Japanese to be able to read OreGairu to the fullest, but that will take a long time haha. To answer your last question, I would have to explain theoretically again. It will sound technical and dry again, sorry for that. In psychoanalysis, there is a notion known as Symbolic Castration. This means that a person's true identity can never fulfil or reach his/her symbolic identity (what society or other people view them to be). Furthermore, the notion of desire is also important here and I go into more detail in my Welcome to the NHK video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNSlla2ZxMq7dXU.html true love, you love the other person as who they are because they are perfect to you. Hence, their imperfections or flaws is what makes them perfect. A visual example would bbs the Japanese practice of kintsugi 金継ぎ or kintsukuroi 金繕い, you can search it up online. The cracks of the pottery are what makes the pottery special, the cracks are filled with gold. The beautiful and unique branches of the gold cracks are only possible insofar as there are cracks in the first place, hence the imperfections (cracks) are necessary. I hope this is a satisfying explanation to your question about true love.

@@kiwicfruit Regarding cynicism: that sounds more so like it's simply stating that actions speak louder than words, and that by them we see that Hachiman is a hypocrite. I don't think it makes an argument why there couldn't be a genuinely cynical subject though. Say, if there was someone who didn't contradict themselves through their actions. Regarding the second part, I don't have much to say. But I'd just like to ask regarding this: > 8man changed to a different high school Where did you get this info? The ln? Because I don't think it's mentioned in the anime. Indeed, if he missed the first week because of the accident, how could he have been present anyway if he was supposed to attend a different HS altogether? Did he skip a whole year for it? Regarding the last point: I'm still unsure hor the reason as to why the loved person is loved. That is, you say that there is a kind of hacceity to people that presupposes imperfection, and that the idea of people being perfect is always only ideal and cannot be actualized. So, does that mean people accept imperfection because they just want romance and have to settle for less to get it (loving inspite of imperfections), or not? To me it sounds it's more like the imperfection itself provides the precise reason for the lovliness (especially with the kintsugi example), but I just don't think this explains it sufficiently for me to understand it. Is it perhaps just biting the bullet and saying that the love for/toward another person is unexplainable/irrational?

@@2tehnik Yes, although I would phrase it in the words of "the truth is in our actions/behaviours, not what we subjectively feel". No, I do not think there is any cynic who does not contradict their actions. I do not think that it is possible given how irrational human beings are. I highly suggest you go into the works of Slavoj Žižek, especially his book The Sublime Object of Ideology. The main point is to show that those people who claim to be cynics, are never truly cynical enough. There is always either a hypocrisy or contradiction, I think this is always the case. If I'm not mistaken, it was mentioned in Season 1 of the anime. If not, then I'm 100% sure it's in the early volumes of the light novel (1-6). I also highly recommend you read the light novels because there are a lot of materials that have been inevitably left out in the anime. Sorry that my analysis video does not only cover the anime only, I think it is more comprehensive to include the light novel. Haha I think you really need to rewatch Season 1 & 2 because your confusion with this has already been explained in the anime. I think you are confused about Hachiman's high school. In middle school, Hachiman was bullied and had a tough time making friends. This is the same middle school with Kaori Orimoto (his first crush). The fact that Hachiman is no longer with the same high school school with Kaori already shows that he has changed schools. Yes, he did in fact changed school and this is not some speculations or implications. Regarding love, I must admit that it is a difficult theory and I need to research more about it. We can have different perspectives on true love and that is alright, I am just presenting to you what I think works for me at least. Once again, I follow the theory of true love by the philosophers Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou. For the meantime, I don't think I can comment further because I think I need to read more to provide you a satisfactory answer. I'll just be honest here with my limitations.

I can’t tell if there’s a “genuine” ending to the anime story since it was built upon the LN framework of being able to have Hachiman pick from a handful of endings, even including Totsuke. Judging just from the anime reactions, it seems like Yui was the most genuinely devastated by the end result. I just can’t see Yukino pouring out that amount of emotion upon finding out she was the runner up. Maybe somehow from the vantage point of the character the ending made sense in terms of feelings, but from my single viewing, it did not. Maybe it needed a couple of more soliloquies from the 8Man before the anime resolved.
