Akira, Alia, Kiara, Shanaya; what do these names have in common. First, they end with either “ya” or “ra’. Second, all of them are not longer than three syllables. At first glance, it may not look strange, but this can give us a hint about how Indian parents name their kids. So let’s explore what is up with Indian names and what it tells us about Indian society.

I was named by my mausi (aunt). She came into the hospital. Since I was always smiling as a baby, she felt that I am मनमोहक. Hence, I was named Mohak :) I love my name because of the meaning it has and because it's really unique! I always get the email IDs I want :P What's the story of your name?

My name was suggested by my late grandfather. My parents both had their names beginning with S, so they wanted to name me something pretty and meaningful with an "S". My grandfather had decided the name even before I was born: Sanjukta. It means togetherness. Since I'm a Bengali, I was given two names. My parents then decided to call me Mohor, which basically means asset or gold coin. They said I was a precious gift to them, and now that is my nick name.

I'm from Galo Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. Our names hold no literal meaning but it defines our family tree and our ancient forefathers. I could count back to 18 generations of my lineage but just remembering the name. For example : My Grandfather was Ripak. My father was Pakgo and my name is Gotum. Ripak - Pakgo - Gotum. My children will have names starting from 'Tum' like Tumli, Tumba etc.

My name is Agniswar. My father gave me this name. He is a big fan of Uttam Kumar the legendary Bengali actor of the 60's era. Uttam Kumar once played the main role of a film named 'Agnishwar' which is based on a Bengali novel of the same name. Both the novel and the film revolves around the eponymous Dr. Agnishwar who is an extremely honest doctor and a good man as depicted in the film. The memory of this film flashed in my father's head when he named me and hence my name - Agniswar.

But dad said Divya is very common, so he kept Divya but added a Shree to it. So that’s how Divyashree. And oh I’m the only Divyashree Mangalorkar in the whole world 😊 Dad passsed away when I was 2 and mum in 2019, but my name has both of their touch & that will always remain 💗

This is why I’m very proud that my father chose an uncommon name and it holds history. My grandfather named me sushmita at first but my father objected it because during that time sushmita sen was crowned and people would think that my parents named me that just because of sushmita sen and also sushmita is a very common name, so he read several newspapers, novels and then he read our religious book he was mesmerised by the name and thought that’d be the best for me. I actually really love the meanings behind our Indian names. When you get to learn the meaning, sometimes it really impacts you as well how carefully your name was chosen. Sometimes it signifies hopes and wishes for the kid, blessings, sometimes what our parents/grandparents wish our life would be like, what we achieve whether success or happiness or health and prosperity...I know change is inevitable, but I hope this doesn't change too much and people still give their kids meaningful names. The thing with Sanskrit names, or names in old languages/inspired from them is how one word, one syllable can hold such intricate meanings... I really cherish my name and it brings me joy when I think of how my grandfather chose it for me, especially now that he's not here. Thinking of it brings those memories back

When I was borned my name was Finalized as "Anamika "by my aunt . I was being called with this name in school, home everywhere until 2 incidents took place 1. I met with a priest and asked the meaning of my name .He told me that my name is meaningless, means my name has no meaning.(I was stunned to know this ) 2. A newly serial came in which Anamika was the name of a ghost (bhootni) After knowing this i was bullied by my siblings. So i told my father to change my name . So this is how my name originated as "Priyanshi" which means "Lovable"

When I was born my nanu managed to get a thousand Indian names starting with the letter N ( N because of my zodiac sign, also my mom and nanu have the same letter names:). It was a month-long process, they began shortlisting, from 1000 to 500, 250,100,50,25 and to 10. We had a big ritual for name-keeping and during that day around 120 people voted on the top 10, which was brought down to the top 5, and from that Nimaay was the winner with more than 50% votes alone :). The other top contestants were 2nd, Nirmit, 3rd was Nachiket, and 4th was Nitya(can't remember the 5th). Until then I was called Rishi, which was given by a cousin + it was my mom's favorite actor, It later became my pet name and is often used more than my real name. so tiring, right?

My father applied lot of logic to name keeping. He decided my name should not come first during viva and practicals . There are 26 letters 26/2= 13. M is the 13th letter. So, M was fix. My mom wanted to name me either muskan or mahi whereas dadu wanted to name me Sumedha.Papa finally decided to name me Medha(wisdom) Mummy got her chance when my sister was born, they named Her Mahi :) Ps: Due to online classes, viva happened in groups so my name came in the last😂

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a man named Vasili Arkhipov pretty much single handedly saved the world from nuclear war. USA had imposed a naval blockade on Cuba in response to the Soviets stationing nuclear missiles there (barely a few hundred kms from the coast of Florida). WW3 seemed inevitable. A Soviet submarine was detected and followed by American ships in the Carribean Sea. The Americans tried to get the submarine to surface through controlled explosions but the submarine crew interpreted it as the start of the war. The launch of nuclear missiles was approved by 2 of the 3 heads of the submarine crew but the third one, Vasili Arkhipov refused to authorize the launch.

My name is Sneh and I am a boy, when I was like 6-12 years old, I was always made fun of because how my name sounded like “snake” and how it resembled the name “Sneha”, I always wanted to change my name. But now that I am older this name has made me stand out, cuz of its meaning (Love) and that it’s quite unique, specially for a boy.

This trend is not just restricted to India. The Urban Rich People in other Asian countries like china, south korea, japan name their kids which sounds less Asian(White names) and they all have one thing in common- They want their kid to study in US or Europe: white sounding names are less likely to face racism. But in Indian context, shift towards globalised names is more like a Class Establishing Phenomenon. Rich parents want their kid to have fancy names which is Kyra, myra, ayan, at present but will change with time.

If some make fun of your name then simply abuse them. If someone says I did not abuse you then why are you abusing. Then say that I did not make fun of your name , then why are you making fun of my name ? If you don't want to abuse them then don't say anything. let them make fun of your name. After some time they will get bored and stop making fun of your name. If you say something they will not get bored and they will irritate you. stay calm Do this everyday then they will not make fun of your name in future.
