Distinguising q and j, c and z, zh and ch. I listen to lots of native speaker here in KZfaq and taiwanese accent must be one of the most brutal one. Consonants above are always pronounced completely diffierent (plus Sh sounds Like s, which is always super confusing), insanely fast spoken.

Mandarin actually has some pretty convenient aspects to it, that make learning it easier than some other languages: no conjugation, no tense on verbs (say, says, said, saying), and a really familiar grammar structure to English speakers. Yeah, the tones can be tough to learn, and the written language takes a lot of study, but it ain't ALL bad.

I've been studying Mandarin for 3.5 years, Japanese for 1.5 years, and I'm just starting to study Cantonese. You can call me crazy, haha. I just love the grind of it! Specifically to Mandarin, I think the hardest part is just putting in the time and sticking with it. When you first begin it feels like a huge mountain (很大的山) to climb, but if you just put in a little bit each day. You'll start to chip away at it. Just little by little (慢慢来). So, if you are interested in studying Mandarin, don't let the fact that everyone says it's hard scare you away. If you find it interesting and you genuinely have fun with the challenge, then the fact that it's hard is what makes it fun in a way. It's a lifelong learning process! In terms of specific challenges, I think for most people, the biggest challenge is the pronunciation part of it and speaking the tones. A lot of people will speak a Chinese phrase to me and I won't understand it because their tones are so off! I'm like "Uh, what did you say?" Fortunately for me, that's not been that hard. My biggest challenge has been the listening part. I think in general I don't listen well! Haha. So, what you might find hard others might find easy and vice versa. One other challenge of Mandarin is just the differences in accents. I think this is why listening has been a challenge for me. People in Taiwan speak differently from people on the Mainland. It's the same language, but the accents are different. The way they pronounce things are different and that makes it tough. I think I'm more comfortable speaking with people from Mainland China than Taiwan because I've listened to more Chinese spoken by people on the Mainland. And then Mainland China vs. Taiwan isn't enough of a distinction. There's the accents of Southern China and Northern China that are different. Beijing and Dongbei using the "R" sounds, etc. And then just everyone being influenced by their regional dialects. So, I think getting used to the different accents is one of the bigger challenges that you'll face. But once again, it's not impossible to get a hang of. It's just gonna take time. I'm still working through it. And then as for the reading part of it. That part is hard, but it's straightforward, ya know? Once you know a character, you know it. Writing is tough if you wanna memorize stroke orders and all, but fortunately, we have computers and digital devices now! Anyways, those are my thoughts on studying Mandarin. If you are watching this video and thinking about learning Mandarin, go for it! KZfaq has a TON of amazing resources. Easy Languages being atop the list!

@BatJoker Ah, ok! In that case: 頑張れ! I think with Japanese specifically, a real key is to get the verb conjugations down. That’s something I’m still working on. I spend a lot of time working on those and memorizing them. I have a long ways to go! But I think the verb conjugations and adjective conjugations are really key. Once you get a hold of those, I think that’ll really open things up for you. As they will for me once I get a better grip on them. In regard to Kanji, it’s all about putting the time in and not getting overwhelmed by the process. The more you see a Kanji, the more you’ll recognize it. I just think you have to see a Kanji enough times before it clicks in your brain. One thing I would say is watch stuff that actually uses Kanji. Some channels only use hiragana and katakana. Which is fine for practicing those scripts, but I prefer channels that use Kanji since that’s what you see all over in Japan. So, definitely watch as much material that uses Kanji as possible. In regard to Onyomi and Kunyomi, typically, Onyomi is used when two Kanji are together and Kunyomi is used when one Kanji is by itself. That’s not always the case, but it often is. That’s what I was told and I’ve found it to be true. So that can help. More than anything, you just need to expose yourself to all the different contexts and get a feel for them. Let me know if you have any follow up questions! Btw, feel free to subscribe to my channel if you are interested in connecting with a fellow learner! I upload about every month or so and usually it’s on my Chinese/Japanese journey. I add them all to the same playlist. So, maybe some of my videos will help you a bit. Though I should stress I’m not a teacher of Chinese or Japanese at the moment. I’m just a guy who has a passion for learning them and figured I’d give back a bit by sharing on KZfaq my experiences!

It's so interesting that native Taiwanese think zhuyin and tones are so difficult to western learners. As someone who grew going to 中文學校 learning pronunciation and bopomofo is tough, but it's probably balanced out by its simpler grammar. Every language has its own tones and inflection too, you just learn them more naturally rather than systematically. I think the reason it's hard is because like they said there's multiple meanings for every pronounced word, so listening is very hard. Tonal inflections are much more important when the meaning will change based on the tone, and if they are speaking fast you have to use a lot of context to understand the meaning. So I think it's not hard to learn and memorize tones or zhuyin fuhao, but developing listening comprehension for all these toned words is very difficult (for me personally)

I would say Korean is harder for English speakers to learn in terms of grammar and syntax, but its writing system is far easier than Mandarin (ironically, the Koreans used to use the Chinese script, but they created Hangul to simplify the writing system). I would really appreciate a Mainland "Easy Chinese/Putonghua" channel.

I consider myself a lower intermediate chinese learner. The biggest problem for me is understanding any word with j, q; zh, ch,; z, c etc.. Each pair sounds identical to me. Chinese runied my life lol.

I think learning Mandarin takes a lot of effort. I started studying on December 26, 2019. I studied for 4-6 hours a day for 2 months straight and reached Hsk 2 level. I studied Hsk 2 on and off for another 3 months. I stopped for over a year but continued watching dramas. I started learning again last year but only a few days week. I finished Hsk 2 level 4 times and hsk 3 level 3 times. What I've learned so far is this, if you go hard with learning, go hard forever 😆 Don't lose your momentum. If you lose your momentum, study the common words that will help you build a conversational foundation. Don't study random vocabulary like "Foam", " Marbles" and "Scales of a fish". Study common verbs, adjectives and grammar structures. Just enough to build a strong foundation. Then, and only then, can you slack a little. Also, learn vocabulary in categories and build dialogue around that. Do it like a phrasebook but make it more cohesive. If you like watching dramas, learn how to describe characters, actors, what you like about the production and what you don't like, what you like about the wardrobe, what dramas you favor and why etc. Get descriptive. Hsk Series is really a good series to build a basic B2 level foundation. They say it's higher but I don't agree because the conversations presented are really high intermediate basics. You can talk to a child with Hsk 1-5. As for 6-9, I think it can touch C1 level. That's my opinion. Anyway,as long as you remain consistent and study what's practical, understanding will fall in place. Also, try to listen more than you speak. I noticed alot of languages learners want to talk and show what they know before they try to listen to understand what they are hearing. Even when corrected for improper pronunciation and grammar use, it's easy for them to become upset and mention how long they've been studying and what certifications and degrees they have in their target language. Don't be that person. A native speaker will always be 99 percent better at pronunciation than you. 🥴 Oh yes, STUDY PRANK VIDEOS AND KZfaq CHANNELS. THESE PEOPLE REPRESENT COLLOQUIAL DIALOGUE. 好好学习天天向上
