When you think of a herd, you probably think of cows, wildebeest or buffalo. In the animal world, there is safety in numbers - more pairs of eyes to look out for predators, for example.
As humans, we don't generally have to worry about predators, but we can gain the protection of the herd in other ways.
"Herd immunity" is the idea that, as long as enough people in a population are immune to a disease (usually through vaccination), they can indirectly protect people who aren't immune from getting infected.
Dr Adam Kucharski is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he works on mathematical models of the spread and control of disease.
Microbiology Today is the Society's quarterly magazine. The content is balanced to meet the needs of the Society’s members. The magazine aims to provide informative and enjoyable broad-interest articles for all readers, including parliamentarians and policy-makers. Each issue focuses on a topic, and topics are chosen with the aim of covering all fields of microbiology.
Read more about Herd Immunity in the February 2017 issue of Microbiology Today: microbiologysociety.org/microb...
The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools.
Our principal goal is to develop, expand and strengthen the networks available to our members so that they can generate new knowledge about microbes and ensure that it is shared with other communities. The impacts from this will drive us towards a world in which the science of microbiology provides maximum benefit to society.

It took but a mere 80M cases for a viral evolution to go from one species into the next truly biologically different version, as per Sars-Cov-2-VOC202012/01 (I simply will refer to this as Sars-Cov-2B) With herd immunity we can expect around 75 mutations before any immunity is achieved, given 6B people needed to be cases first, given the 80M people for the first biologically different version as median. With a median off like 100% it’s still 37-38 mutations that are gonna be biologically different enough. With a median 200% off it’s still 25 mutations. I said so back in March or April, when the Dutch authorities (RIVM) suggested such, and it still is a bad plan. Now that I have a first mutation to calculate with, extrapolation of said number, will yield way too many mutations to be viably herd immunitized against, since the Nth mutation will be different enough from the first, to have zero impact of having contracted the first and having been cured of such. Also, with a to be expected 75 mutations, the final death toll will rise to it’s current multiplied by roughly sqr(75), by very rough approximation. Go China, hard isolate any cases, globally, no travel, and stay indoors for 5 weeks mandatory worldwide, with only full PPE for delivering of food and drink. AFter that, and the isolation there will be very few new cases propping up, and a vaccine may be studied online. That is the only way to avoid a 2nd, 3rd, Nth wave. (up to 75) At a to be expected 75 mutations before global herd immunity sets in, there’s also the loop factor, which is a consequence of people gaining immunity against Sars-Cov-2a, and believing themselves immune to Sars-Cov-2b75, which is then 75 evolutions of the same virus away from the original strain, starting a loop infection spread. Being immune against Sars-a does not neccesarliy provide any immunity against the 75th. Since as of yet there’s no testing which variants are infecting whom, the hospitals themselves without adequate isolation, patient to patient, may be allowing for faster new strain spread than the orginal virus."

Vaccines work by infecting you with the virus in a controlled environment so your body knows how to dispose of it. People who had Coronavirus were, technically, vaccinated. The only difference between vaccines & previous infections is the severity & controlled environment. For example, if a coronavirus vaccine was made, it would use a strain of it to make the vaccine itself.
@yellow9706
@yellow9706 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexgear959 Partially true. The difference is UNCERTAINTY. You mentioned about controlled environment, that's mean we know exactly the dose to cause antiviral immunity in a human body yet not causing further complications or even death. HENCE THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO CORONAVIRUS. Rather than exposing population to create immunity which is highly questionable and unpredictable, it's better to do containment while buying time for scientist to develop the possible vaccine. China is encouraging patients who recovered from coronavirus to donate their plasma, so I think they are going down this path.

@@yellow9706 you aren’t acknowledging the lack of care for people with preexisting conditions due to hospital prioritization of the coronavirus. You’re also not acknowledging the other unintended consequences the longer we halt other industries. Economic instability encroaching towards economic collapse is something much worse with much dire consequences. Stress, suicide, crime, and other factors come into play when we start heading down towards economic collapse. So not only will we be hit with a virus but the economic impact will be even harsher than you realize if we don’t start participating in the economy. Let me also say, managing stress is a huge factor in maintaining a healthy immune system. Which if you want the individuals in our population to have a higher chance of surviving is imperative more than ever. The government is buying us time for the time being by accruing more debt, but the longer we wait to develop a feasible vaccine and start the economy the worse this will get when we realize that we’ll be in a battle in not just one front with the virus. We’ll have a multitude of areas we’ll be battling.

With coronavirus we don't have a vaccine yet, that is the first problem. Secondly we still don't know if people that are infected can relapse which apparently they can from what some news programs have said and also we are unaware if someone can get reinfected once they are well. Also what if the virus mutates? That makes her immunity fall on its face because if certain people were immune thetpy would be immune to certain viruses but no their mutations.

@spencercook270
@spencercook270 2 жыл бұрын
depends on the R0, vaccination availability, and like he said at the end, many more factors in reality. For example, the population he was explaining was isolated. We don't live in isolated communities. Also depends on if we're talking about elimination, or just receiving a degree of protection enough to slow the spread. Elimination means the virus no longer exists within that small community (which many people misunderstand as the achievable goal of herd immunity). Herd immunity can be more of a spectrum, and work like the flu, where everyone mostly gets it once a year around the same time. Doesn't kill the virus out of existence, but it adds a useful form of control to it.

Initial Virus was approx R3, Delta is 8-9. The Flu is R1.3 I read somewhere else. Grab your calculator and see the numbers after 10 cycles of transmission and youll see why Delta is moving so fast through a population. Another thing to note is each mitigation measure that is put in place will reduce the transmission rate too. Masks, Social distancing, lockdowns, sanitiser... etc all bring the number down.. but long term, vaccination is the only thing that can get us back to "Normal" life....

Yes, Herd Immunity? A stampede of cows is seen running towards a cliff where they will ultimately die. Of the thousands of cows, one of the cows looks at another cow that's also on the run and asks, "Hey buddy, why are you running?" And that's when the other cow answers, "I don't know. I'm running because that other cow is running". WTF? People please.....wake up!
