Lecture Title - The Servant, the Idol, & the Image of God: Isaiah’s Conversation with the Creation Account
Genesis 1-3 introduces the reader to a unique creature. One who is not only animate and gendered, but one who, unlike all the other creatures, is made in the ṣélem (“image”) of the Almighty. Genesis describes the animation of the creature and its installation in God’s garden as a precursor to the calling of all callings-the stewardship of creation. As the great story of redemption makes clear, the role of image-bearer is ̒ādām’s first and final calling. Yet with the fall, the image is twisted, and thereby God’s servant perverts his calling. In this lecture, Richter connects these great themes of Genesis-creation, fall, restoration-with the prophet Isaiah’s vision of what was and what is to come.
Sandra L. Richter (PhD Harvard University) is Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College. She is author of The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament (IVP Academic, 2008) and Stewards of Eden: What Scripture Says About the Environment and Why It Matters (IVP Academic, 2020).
The Henry Center for Theological Understanding provides theological resources that help bridge the gap between the academy and the church. It houses a cluster of initiatives, each of which is aimed at applying practical Christian wisdom to important kingdom issues-for the good of the church, for the soul of the theological academy, for the sake of the world, and ultimately for the glory of God. The HCTU seeks to ground each of these initiatives in Scripture, and it pursues these goals collaboratively, in order to train a new generation of wise interpreters of the Word-lay persons and scholars alike-for the sake of tomorrow’s church, academy, and world.

Another way I like to look at it is like this: the Shorter Catechism says that the chief end of man is to glorify God; but man would have it that the chief end of man is to glorify man!

Listen to the introducer....."Good afternoon, I would like to welcome you to our **Scripture and ministry lecture**." And there are **men in the ** audience. Thus as St. Paul confirms. "11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12 But I suffer not **a woman to teach** nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression." 1 Tim. 2:10-14 (KJV)

@@thewatcher7728 I think you may have missed the context of that whole issue - maybe go back to Genesis and the charge given to them- male & female. Richter’s information is historical account as is yours. Whew!!! You are a distraction on these forums.

@@janicestephenson4245 .......The Truth cannot be changed no matter how many centuries pass. But it does prove who are the true and dedicated followers of Christ and those who are not. "33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to enquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command." 1 Cor 14:33-37 (ANIV) Are you " spiritually gifted" Janice? As it is the "Lord's command" it is irrevocable, irrespective of the passing of time. But it certainly 'Separates the men [of God] from the [Devil's] boys' .

Dr Richter has really impressed me with her comments, most inspiring her remarks on the pastor’s question re the heroine addict and the 80 yr old survive. This is my 1st time hearing her. I found her when I searched for study on Isaiah, and I think I am going to enjoy studying her teachings. God bless you!

I find it amazing that our King of kings n Lord of lords would actually use ordinary people like Isaiah .. cleanse him, call him, give him a vision and message to His people bcos He wants to give them a chance to repent n receive His restoration. What a just and compassionate God we have.

Romans 11:25 ESV:- "Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in." The partial blindless upon Israel as God's salvation is meant for all nations. You can take a look at Jacob's blessing for Ephraim ("multitude of nations / fullness of gentiles") and see if this connection make sense. Shalom!
