Check out what we find in this calcite ore from a silver mine. an Hour in vinegar to clear and remove all surface contamination, then an hour in Hydrochloric acid. And the outcome is amazing! Native Silver on Calcite!

I seen crystalized silver in a silver purification cell many times, it is really neat to see silver in its crystalline form in nature.

The easiest and best way to clean certain specimens. You do have to keep a close eye on them, disolve too much and you only have silver left, not specimens worth 20 times that.

How do you dispose the acid when your done?
@noob19087
@noob19087 3 ай бұрын
Chemist here. You can keep reusing it until it stops working. Keep it in a plastic or glass container, rinse any contaminated dishes with a good amount of water and pour down the drain. But if you need to get rid of a bunch of it you can just dump in baking soda until it stops bubbling to neutralize it, and then just pour it out.

I used the left overs to dissolve some calcite off quartz, just let it go until it was all used up. then it is harmless.

Do you coat the specimens with anything to prevent the silver from tarnishing? I would think over time a silver oxide layer would form on the silver crystals and make them turn black, unless they were blocked from contact with atmospheric or other oxygen.
