Have you ever wondered what is it like to be a private jet pilot and fly Part 135? Come along and discover what it is like to fly a Challenger Jet for Vista America as we discuss some of the differences between flying private versus the airlines.
All checklists were adhered to and was removed in the interest of time. All reference to Vista is to imply Vista America and not VistaJet.

So I fly with two other guys for a part 91 operator who owns two Lear 45s. We don't really have a set schedule, we just up and leave whenever the owners want to go somewhere. Usually the maximum time we're gone is 4 days, which honestly doesn't happen that often. Most of the time it's 3 days, or even just an overnight. There's also a lot of day trips in there. I'm a younger guy, late 20s. My chief pilot and the other guy are both in their mid 50s, so there's definitely an experience gap. We only do around 500 hours a year total. Sounds great, right? Well, I thought so too when I first started flying there. That's how they sold it to me : "Oh, you'll be home a lot!" And that is true to an extent. What they don't tell you is that it's impossible to make any kind of plans because our owners can call us the day before wanting to go to Broken Dick, Arkansas and we have to go. Doesn't happen that way all the time, but it happens enough to keep you on your toes. Plus we do a LOT of weekend flying. Our busy days are pretty much Thursday to Monday. Which basically means you can have a random Tuesday off, but when normal people want to do stuff with you on the weekend, you'll be unavailable. It doesn't bother my coworkers, they're both pretty seasoned pilots with families of their own, both married for a pretty long time, established in their own lives and whatnot. On their days off they pretty much just stay at home and do Dad things like mow the lawn, play with their RC car collection, or work on their backhoe in their shed. So they can literally be ready at a moment's notice because they don't do anything anyway LOL. But I'm gonna be honest, it's a little difficult for me because I can't really do much on my days off, because you're not really 100% sure you're gonna have that day off until the evening before. Anyway, what I'm getting at with this long rant is that I wouldn't mind the whole 4 days on, 3 days off thing of the 121 world because then at least I'd know for sure those days would be mine. No last minute trips to Palm Beach or St. Simon's that upend whatever you had planned. The whole 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off does not appeal to me also because I don't think a certain person I've been seeing would appreciate it lol. Doesn't matter as much when you've been married for 25 years, but when you're just starting out, it can put some strain on the relationship.
@BaronPilot
@BaronPilot 2 ай бұрын
Exactly why I wouldn’t take a Part 91 job that doesn’t have hard days off. I have friends with the same issues. Can plan anything as they never know when a trip will pop up. Another example why I love my schedule.

I’m a former 135 Charter Jet pilot and currently flying Airbuses for a 121 operator. In my opinion, the flying was way more fun at the 135. However the schedule was terrible. 8-14 days on the road with 2-5 legs a day really took a toll. Now I’m only out 4 days at the most. Works much better for me and my family, but to each their own.
@Nghilifa
@Nghilifa 2 ай бұрын
I can definitely feel that. I'm in flight training right now and I wouldn't mind bagging a 135 job when I've got the hours to do so. That being said, I don't have a family yet, so I'm much more flexible as far as work is concerned. I can imagine that with that schedule that you mentioned, being away from one's spouse and children will take a toll indeed (assuming you're married that is). Fly safe!
@BaronPilot

It’s all perspective. While you may be away more days in a row, you’re also home 2 weeks in a row. Not many people can say that. But again I completely understand both arguments.

Wondering why the copilot didnt read back the hold short instructions correctly. He only said hold short. When he should have said "hold short of 30R". Cutting out the runway in a hold short can lead to bad habits. Also, the controller did not catch it either. Great video as always

Coming from TSA anything is gonna seem like a huge upgrade for him. They were known to be among the worse regionals, up (down?) there with Mesa. Every time I hear somebody claiming 135 schedules are better, it's always from people that were never 121, or were only 121 way too briefly to gain any meaningful seniority. When I was a 121 regional check airman we had a LOT of corporate guys jumping ship to us, mainly for the schedule and pay. Even when I was the bottom reserve guy at a more respectable wholly owned regional I could get more than 3 days in a row at home. Now a little over a decade later I'm already bidding 30% in base in a legacy carrier a little under 3 years in, holding 18 days off, and able to pick up and drop trips at will. Admittedly, it wasn't always like this, the "lost decade" generation of 121 pilots always lament the early 2000s was the era of 10+ year reserve FOs, and 20 year upgrades. But barring any other strings of successive industry-wide catastrophic events (9/11, oil crisis, age 65 rule, '08 crisis, etc etc) those days should be far behind us. At any rate, now I'm just rambling, and different strokes for different folks, but I just find it funny former 121 guys that jump ship to corporate or whatever say the schedules suck. Nowadays, they sure don't, not at least at the places worth working for.

That made me chuckle too. Well of course this will seem better, you were at a bottom tier regional. I would not call 2 weeks or 2 weeks off good QOL at all. There’s a reason 135 > 121 is a one way street.

@@Micg51 Exactly. I've never met a corporate or 135 guy go 121 and go back.

This morning (Friday April 19th) we landed at MIA on 8R from JAX in an A319 Airbus and as I we pulled off the runway, I heard someone cleared for takeoff, then saw an identical jet to the one you fly lift off and climb away. Might that have been YOUR flight, per chance?

How long did it take you to get a hanger at St Augustine? I've been on the list for over 3 years now and they told me I was 150 on the list earlier this year. The repair facilities say you have to know someone to get a hanger there. Thoughts?

Took me 5 years! Literally 🙄 I would suggest stopping in the office on a regular basis to check your status on the list and use that time to get to know them. Not sure if it helps but can’t hurt 🤣
