Gerald Lopez explains what Ki could possibly mean in the context of Aikido, and why we need to at least try to understand the founder’s worldview, not only to improve our aikido, but also to fulfil his vision and mission.
Gerald discusses ancient worldviews as well as the latest quantum physics explanations of the universe, and how they could possibly complement each other. He also talks about Ki as life force which provides a blueprint for growth, and also provides energy for acting in the world.

Thank you very much for this helpful and deeply insightful explanation of Ki. I recently returned to the practice of Aikido after an absence of several years. Your teaching on Ki has given me a new enthusiasm for the practice of Aikido.

Whatever keeps the universe together and orderly is not yet known. Scientists call that force black matter. Whether humans tap into that force to keep themselves alive and how they do that is not yet known. Some force obviously keeps you alive so you can do aikido and other martial arts.

Thanks for this. Very informative. I had my first Aikido lesson on Friday. I have been on a spiritual journey for some time and it now feels right to incorporate a body aspect to my meditation practice. The inner atittude seems primary in most martial arts, but in Aikido it really seems to be not just positivity, but peace of mind in action.

Dear Sir, I always felt a deep internal feeling to learn about Ki and Aikido, but I am traumatized from childhood have ptsd, also in my country do not teach an internal meaning What really is an Aikido, but teach just external physical exercises. What do you think, why masters say foreign words Ki, Aikido and others strange senseless words for our western mind, when Aikido and Ki are exactly learning Who I really am, are learning my true nature, and nothing else ? How do you think, what really are all movements of Aikido ?

Thank you for this video. You made this video very clear indeed explaining what is Ki and I believe in this and actually find it fascinating! I agree that Ki is part of Aikido and that it is within us around and how energy is working in the Universe and that it is everywhere actually and as you said there is a blueprint order that works within specific rules. It is something that is real and once we accept it within our Aikido study, it will help us understand what the Founder said...

Surely the best approach to study ki must begin with humility. The criticism on this comment thread reminds me of the number one rule i was taught of master and student. That you do not interupt the teachers flow with unneccesary questions. Some twenty years later i am discovering in my heart new meanings to those lessons i did not try to qualify at the time. This is ki. This is teaching. Sir i would dearly like to have a long form discussion as i feel suddenly a great rush to return to training this year.

Thank you for your profound comment. I sort of dropped off because I felt that perhaps getting ahead of myself, but some of the comments here encourage me to try to explain further what my experience and understanding has been. It is not a subject that is easy to explain in the West, because we have been indoctrinated in a Positivist (called scientific) understanding. For people who are closer to nature, these principles are self-evident.

@@mindbodyaikido9586 yukteswar on the role of guru "Look, there is no point in blindly believing that after I touch you, you will be saved, or that a chariot from heaven will be waiting for you. Because of the guru's attainment, the sanctifying touch becomes a helper in the blossoming of Knowledge, and being respectful towards having acquired this blessing, you must yourself become a sage, and proceed on the path to elevate your Soul by applying the techniques of sadhana given by the guru. " Many thanks for the reply sir. Have you ever looked into Yukteswars work on the yuga cycle. And his repositioning of the ages. Would you agree with this finding. Now seems no better time for the experienced and the understanding to stand up. Though the discipline of practice is still up to us. Unfortunately discipline is the proof. How much the western modern consciousness needs to be poked. It would seem we are all waiting for a chariot from heaven.

I recall the first time I came across this word and concept. It was in the writings contained in the first edition of Mas Oyama's "This is Karate". I was 12 years old at the time in the mid 1960's when I first sent away for that monumental big book! Whoever wrote that section on the spiritual aspect of Karate stated also that once we develop the "ki" we connect or participate with the Divine! I don't recall the exact words but understood that the "world force", that which holds everything together is what is implied here. At that time (being influenced with Catholic Dogma, I wondered if the Ki and the "Spirit of God" were synonymous here. I often contemplated this throughout the years. Seeing that it is also used in healing, one would rightly identify this more accurately by humbly trying to understand it and learn from it rather than quibble about it's origins and identity. If it's universal then it must permeate in other ideologies. Anyway, just a thought.

Thank you for your comments Egon. Funny you should mention Masutatsu Oyama, I picked up a small book of his when I was a teenager in the 70s! I did karate for a while and enjoyed it. I then found a similarly small book by Koichi Tohei, and was absolutely amazed by what he was saying and showing. Five years later, when I found an aikido club in London that mentioned Tohei, I signed up immediately (well, actually, the teacher wouldn't let me join for several months, because there were "too many men"! So I cycled the 15 miles every practice day in the middle of winter and sat there at every class, watching. After 3 months he let me join!).

The main issue is there is no universally agreed definition of what Ki even is! So without that how can it even be put through scientific, peer reviewed testing? its a ludicrous situation that simply gives many inadequate Aikidoka a "fall back position" to justify their lack of understanding of basic biomechanics and core concepts like kuzushi, rasen, maki, otoshi etc.

KI is everything. KI is Gods Spirit. You see KI in all living things. To know KI is to know the universe. Done things that just trip me the hell out. Like the day. I won 36 karate match’s in a row. A round Robin. It wasn’t my skills though they are good. Wasn’t my size. It did help. And it wasn’t my ranking. Just brown belt. It was my Spirit. And my thought pattern. Sensei said that who lose the match. Has to sit down. I was like 9th in line. And I had one thought and one thought only. I WILL STAY STANDING. That was my only focus. I went through all 18 student. Sensei ask me. How did I do this. I explained what I was thinking. To my surprise. He said let’s set you do it again. It was crazy. And we started. At this point I’m in what I call my Bruce Lee mode. Just kept moving any and all direction. And struck when the Spirit moved me. Won every match. We had Black Belt from Japan there. People were getting together planning ways to beat me. It was like my body was on remote control. T just did what it need to do. Every strike. IPPON. MATCH OVER. KI has allowed me to really do some crazy things. Inside the dojo and outside the dojo. Very important video to try and grasp something that only comes with years of training. Really is so misunderstood and confusing. KI IS LIFE. THANK YOU.

People talk about "KI" like it's some complicated, mythical thing that is some esoteric concept. Let's simplify. In my opinion, "KI'" means "intent" or "determination". To have "strong KI" means to have strong determination and intent. For example, when running a marathon, having "strong KI" means, from start to finish, you maintain a clear picture of yourself crossing the finish line, and you don't let that image be removed from your mind until you actually cross the finish line. To have "weak KI" would mean that, as soon as you feel the first sign of fatigue, you start thinking to yourself, "WHY did I ever sign up for this marathon!? WHAT was I thinking!? This was a bad idea!? I'm never going to make it! I could be relaxing in my recliner right now sipping a cold drink instead of suffering on this marathon course!!" That's "pulling your KI". That's simply negative thinking. When it comes to aikido, martial arts, or any physical activity, all we have are the principles of physics. The principles of physics are NEVER wrong. NEVER. One CANNOT overcome the principles of physics. O'Sensei could not. Tohei Sensei could not. All you can do is to position yourself in relation to your opponent in a way that give you the advantage when it comes to balance and leverage. Judoka understand this. They know that being good in judo is all about center of gravity, moment arm, fulcrums, and being quick enough and strong enough to get to advantageous positions quicker than their opponent does. This gives them the best opportunity to exploit their opponent and to turn the principles of physics against them. This is why if you put a black belt aikido student against a black belt judo student - the judoka will easily throw the aikido student. Much of aikido is based on esoteric thinking, and, overtime, aikido students ACTUALLY BEGIN TO BELIEVE all of the stuff told to them.

Hey thanks for your comment, I agree with you in many ways. Ki is really simple, but because it contains so many ideas in Japanese culture, it is really difficult to explain to Westerners (and now Easterners) steeped in mechanistic philosophy. Your example of the marathon runner is a great one. The strong intent provides the energy to complete the race. As you can see, it is not just physical energy, but also mental fortitude (or as Koichi Tohei would put it, mind and body coordinated). Aikido is all about understanding the laws of nature, or as you call it, physics. But you don't need to understand them conceptually, only in bodily feeling and response. When you have a bodily understanding of the laws of physics (or nature), you can throw anyone, no matter the size difference. My teacher explained aikido in terms of Ki, as a very effective method to learn the laws of physics without having to understand theory. He deeply understood both aikido and judo - his teacher Kenshiro Abbe actually beat the judo legend Kimura - and he chose to explain using ki because for him it was the best way. But, as he always said, you can only learn through correct teaching and diligent practice. You are right, esoteric thinking is not enough, and can even be a hindrance.
@user-sg8kq7ii3y

@@defifreedom2950 I agree with much of what you have said. Except I don't agree when you say that "You can throw anyone no matter the size difference." Yes, that's possible, if the bigger guy is untrained, out of shape, or he's not athletic. But if all things are equal, then the bigger/stronger guy will win. I do know the story of Tohei throwing bigger judo black belts in Hawaii. That is a true story. But here's what people never mention. Tohei sensei himself was also a very accomplished judoka, who started judo as a boy and continued into his college years. So of course he could throw Hawaii's judo blackbelts because he was probably better than them at judo! Then, on top of that, he had his aikido. So not only did he know exactly how they would attack. He also knew what they knew and what they didn't know. And he was just simply better than them at even what they knew! Tohei sensei was a gifted individual no doubt about that. He was an accomplished judoka. He was aikido's most highly skilled student/sensei, and on top of that, he was a WW2 combat veteran. He was truly a warrior. But most people are not like him. The marathon example I gave is an example of "Extending KI". As you know, according to Tohei sensei, if you achieve one of the KI principles, then you have achieved them all - Extend KI, Relax completely, Keep weight underside, Keep one point.

@@mindbodyaikido9586 There's no point in doing that. Why would I bother? Also, I wasn't condemning your presentation method. I *was* condemning your *content*. A string of logical fallacies means your arguments/content are poor. As for some people taking your assertions seriously that bears absolutely no weight on anything and in no way implies the subject is worth exploring.
