@@GrowLLLTigeRRR He was baptised in St Michaels church Dublin. I have forgotten the Irish name for Michael. Something like Michan. I am English but have been inside this church and very interesting it was too. I have touched the font in which he was baptised. Also in there are relatives of Nelson's fancy woman. They're in coffins covered in dark red covers. The grave yard is full of Oscar Wiled's family. In the entrance to the church a an very old keyboard. Handel first played his water music in that church and also on that very keyboard. Unfortunately, the church was vandalised a few years ago. Probably by Catholics as that church was a protestant church.

Yaron Brook, "Let's teach the positive." No. Let's teach the truth. The whole truth. The positive and the negative.
@damonhage7451
@damonhage7451 5 жыл бұрын
+Kurtlane You are misunderstanding his point. He is saying there are many ways to be wrong, and there is only one way to be right. If I say "communism is bad", that doesn't tell you what is right. Is fascism right? Is the mixed economy right? Is capitalism right? You can't tell. If I say, capitalism is right, then there is no confusion. An easy analogy is I can say an electron doesn't way 1kg. I can also say an electron doesn't weigh 10 kg. That doesn't tell you what it actually weighs, which is what is important. You are conflating ethics and epistemology. Yaron is talking about epistemology. You are talking about ethics.
@Kurtlane
@Kurtlane 5 жыл бұрын
@@damonhage7451 , sorry, your post is over my head. I don't understand epistemogy, and as far as I know, I wasn't talking just ethics. My teacher used to mention a woman who had recently given birth and was nursing her baby. She said, "I am a Madonna. And a cow." This was an example of the full truth. Not just Madonna, not just cow, but both. Same here. But if he means, "We need to teach ALSO the positive," then I agree.
@damonhage7451
@damonhage7451 5 жыл бұрын
+Kurtlane No worries. Epistemology is just the term philosophers use to mean the branch of philosophies that study knowledge. You can mean positive in two ways. You can be positive as in "good for you, a value" when you are talking about ethics. If your country is overrun with crime, that is not positive. That is a value judgement for you. The other meaning is a "positive claim". Basically meaning "I assert that such and such is true", which you can see comes under epistemology because you are making a knowledge claim. When Yaron was talking about tell the positive, I believe he meant this second type. It is similar to saying it doesn't do you any good to have a political party that is "against the dems". You also have to stand for something. In other words, you have to assert something is true, make a positive claim. I'm not sure what you mean by your analogy though. haha
@Kurtlane
@Kurtlane 5 жыл бұрын
@@damonhage7451 , thanks, it's getting clearer, but I am still confused. Let's say one teaches about both the beauty of Spanish 16th century art and the brutality of Spanish 16th century colonialism. Both are educational, they are about giving knowledge to students, so this should be epistemology. At the same time, my value judgement is that it is good to teach both. So this is ethics too. Philosophy is so confusing.
@damonhage7451
@damonhage7451 5 жыл бұрын
They aren't opposites. You don't teach one or the other. For example, there should be moral teaching. You in some sense could call that both an epistemological and an ethical crossover. They come up at different tiers. Metaphysics is the study of what is existence/reality. Epistemology is how do know or acquire knowledge. Those two are the basic branches of any philosophy. From these two branches you derive ethics. For example, if your metaphysical position is "nothing exists", then ethics doesn't makes sense. You can't do anything because nothing exists. If your metaphysical position is reality exists, but we know it through faith/God, then you will have an ethics that say what you should do is whatever he commanded. So they aren't opposites. Ethics is derived from metaphysics and epistemology. And the concepts of purpose/values/reasons to do or not do something don't come up until ethics.

As a general critique of panel presentations like this, the practice of taking 4, 5, 6 questions at once before answering is one I think should go the way of the dodo. For starters, as a listener to academic talks, it's more or less impossible to remember the totality of question 1 by the time 5 other people ask complicated or nuanced questions. For the panelists and the discussion generally, it seems to lead to an ankle-deep response to each question instead of a deep dive that is more easily facilitated by 1 q, 1 a, 1 q, etc. Just a thought.

+Justin Barnard +trakrekkid The multiple question taking tactic was something developed to great effect by the Blair Government in the UK. It allowed whoever was being questioned to avoid all of the questions they didn't like, while then creating their own question to answer under the pretext that you have cleverly summarized them all, or that only the friendlier questions mattered. It works brilliantly for politicians but atrociously for those wanting an honest dialogue.

I always wondered if this was some arkane Robert's Rules thing the Brits were accustomed to since I'd never witnessed it until I started watching UK panels. I am scared of the reemergence of Western identity. But I am also hopeful about it. Because without it, without willingness to sacrifice oneself to defend one's children, parents, siblings, town, city, country, we are doomed. Without that we will all soon be dhimmis in Islamic caliphate. The soldiers who fought against Nazis 70+ years ago -- weren't they sacrificing themselves? The Finnish soldiers and civilians who fought against Soviet troops in the Winter war -- weren't they sacrificing themselves for their country? Israeli soldiers today are doing the same. And every army needs unity and togetherness. Without that it will be defeated in no time. I do not buy the idea of "let us be so afraid of ourselves turning bad that we will let others, who are bad beyond doubt, exterminate us." This is not just defeatist, It's also shameful. Yaron Brook should be ashamed to say, "That is the enemy." (1:35:08). He is alive only because countless people have sacrificed themselves.
@damonhage7451
@damonhage7451 5 жыл бұрын
+Kurtlane Risking your life for your values is not a sacrifice. You think people who are self-interested won't defend themselves? No, the soldiers weren't sacrificing themselves. The point of being a soldier is not to die. The point of being a soldier is to defeat the enemy. Yes, you risk death, but that is not the purpose. Why do you have to be a sacrificial animal to have a cohesive army? I have no idea how your last part relates to Yaron. You think Yaron advocates allowing yourself to be exterminated? You obviously don't know anything about him or Objectivism. As for him being alive, no. He is most likely alive because a few people in the world decided to be self-interested enough to form a country based on freedom, that his native country to emulate.

@@damonhage7451 It's one of those objectivist wraparounds. What's clear to a child becomes obscure and contradictory once a philosophy like that gets hold of it. In Objectivism, Sacrifice becomes not sacrifice; in Communism equality becomes inequality, etc. No, thanks, I'll stick to the old definitions without wraparounds.
@damonhage7451
@damonhage7451 5 жыл бұрын
+Kurtlane I guess I don't see it that way. I like the way Objectivism gives rational definitions to the terms people use. It seems you are objecting to Objectivism's ethics on linguistic grounds, not conceptual grounds. Why? Why would you make sacrifice mean "to lose something" when you already have a word that describes that, "loss". It is useful to have a concept that describes giving something up and getting something more valuable to you (trade) and another concept to describe giving something up and getting something less valuable to you (sacrifice). If you don't like the word sacrifice for that concept, just call it "gloop" or some other nonsense word. There problem solved. Christian ethics demands that you gloop and that is irrational. You should have an ethics that never requires you to gloop. Just remember when Objectivists say sacrifice, they mean gloop. It isn't a trick to try to confuse you. When they say sacrifice they mean "give up something for something of lesser value to you". No trick, no game, no hidden meaning. They consider that to be the appropriate definition of the word. The people who use sacrifice to mean both lesser value and higher value are the ones trying to obfuscate. As for your reference to communism, that isn't linguistic argument really like your problem with sacrifice. Communists say that "taking these actions leads to equality", meaning a system where everyone lives happily in a big society with no private property. Those actions don't lead to that. That is a factual issue, not a linguistic one. As for its truth, communism created alot of equality. Many people were equally dead.

@@pepegoeth6814 , about 16 years ago professor Bernard Lewis, top specialist on Islamic history, said that Western Europe is doomed to turn Muslim. Thus was the first time someone who was not an Islamic extremist said it. No one believed him then. And now? The death of Western Europe is not just "in the domain of ideas." It's in every raped child, in halal food being required, in muezzins screaming call to prayer at 5 am, in mass prayers in the streets closing all traffic, in "Wear hijab or be raped" leaflets, in non-Muslims being beaten for being non-Muslims, in murders and in terror attacks, and in European governments covering up all that. It's all around you. In this case it is not about WWIII. It is about European people defending their daughters from being turned into sex slaves. And other such things. It is not about one country attacking another. Everywhere it's a local thing. So it has nothing to do with exterminating humanity. There are civil wars going on now, and nobody is predicting end of humanity because of it. I hate wars, particularly civil wars. But I don't see a peaceful way out, other than complete surrender. As Koran says, "War is required of you, even though you hate it. But Allah knows What's best for you, and you do not."

I can’t believe Yaron Brook. Since the 60’s when I was “agnostic”, I have seen Christian influence systematically dismantled, such that little remains. Yet he still blames “religion” for our desperate condition today. When you take a wrong turn in life, the smart thing to do is to either turn back or at least change direction. But Yaron instead insists that we press on regardless of the extreme danger signs. Thankfully, atheist Douglas Murray brought the voice of reason to the discussion.

What is killing Western society is: 1. the wars we needlessly fought on behalf of politicians for their own political aims that slaughtered our people by the millions. 2. The use of human trafficking, because that's what immigration policy really is, to make up for the murderous escapades that same political class indulged in. 3. The importation of foreigners to provide those same politicians with the material they need for the divide and rule principle they govern by. 4. The inability to recognise that 2 & 3 are really just empire in reverse. Proving that political and business interests are have no real allegiance to anything but their interests. 4. The rise of corporations that have no allegiance to the societies they serve. They will promote any measure that boosts short term profit and then uses that profit to make governing elites malleable and sensitive to their concerns rather than the society they were created to serve. Its up to people in the west to say no to the governing/business class. They are here to serve us. They may be wise and their advice worth listening to but that's as far as their influence should ever be allowed to go. In Western Europe it reached a point where it needs to be sterner than a "no". I would send most of the politicians to serve life terms for what they are trying to bring about. Democrats they most certainly are not and we just can't afford them any longer.

When Douglas Murray was talking how postmodernists just drop art and religion because something went wrong and that "what? we shouldn't have to do anything with religion?" something interesting happened. He also said that that is also part of why they are pushing to tear groups apart. That they want to prevent organizing along communal grounds. I think Yaron got somewhat restless and , I think, he may have had a bit of an Realization. Something turned in his head. This section of the conversation is very important, especially for libertarians! Many times they make the point that man should find through reason what values and ideas would make them truly happy in reality. That because man himself is the meaning. But one thing, very interestingly, is that they rarely ever try to make a point what these ideas and values might objectively be exactly. It's usually something vague about capitalism and individualism, the point of which is to find the above mentioned values and ideas. It all seems rather lacking. Certainly something to think about. I am more and more impressed by Douglas Murray as a thinker. P.S. Scratch that, Yaron just doubled down and ploughed on with the same as always.

If you make it too loud, the listener can always turn down the volume. But you can only turn it up so much with normal equipment. People who complain about robot voices bother me too. At least I can understand what they are saying, which is more than you can say for some people. I can adapt to and in my mind correct the robot reader mispronounciations. Maybe some people can't do that. If someone doesn't like the robot voice, well, find another video.

+OhMaDayzz Context is important. He probably has not thought much about the issue. FGM is practiced solely to prevent the pleasure of sexual activity, which on the face of it is immoral. As to circumcision, there is mixed research about it, and there is even some debate as to whether there is an impact on pleasure or not from it. That is relevant context. If a baby is born with a rotting arm, you don't call that baby arm mutilation because the doctors took it off. You have a gut biome. If the doctors kill off some bad bacteria with drugs, that is a physical act. That doesn't mean they are involved in baby stomach mutilation. The fact that a procedure was done does not by itself delegitimize the act from a rights perspective, and rights apply in a context.

FGM describes a wide range of practices, with many (or possibly most) of these practices being less invasive and damaging than male circumcision. Not all forms of FGM prevent sexual pleasure either. Damon Hage yes but I think you missed the point that was being made, if the circumcising was done for a purely medical reason you would be right, however the vast number of people who are do this are doing so only for religious reasons, that’s why it’s genital mutilation. Medical there are never rare cases where getting circumcised is required, none of which occur pre-puberty.

"however the vast number of people who are do this are doing so only for religious reasons" I don't believe that's true in the US, it may be in Europe.

How did Clair Fox get a peerage, but not Douglas Murray? Still, he's more use to us out of the House of Lords.

Couldn't hear Mr Murray very well, makes these things hard to watch with the sound so low.

I came to watch Yaron and Douglas change ideas... Stop standing between them Claire Fox! Everytime one of them say something, you change the subject!

It would be wonderful if the volume/audio level could be increased considerably. Barely audible, even with my own speakers full-up. Thank you.

Some really interesting questions from the audience and would have loved to hear answers to! Why get so many people to ask question if your not going to let the panel answer!
