What is magma and how is magma formed? | The difference between magma and lava // Magma is a super-hot viscous material that consists of molten and semi-molten rock that flows deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Depending on the chemical composition of the magma, there are three different magma categories: basaltic magma, andesitic magma, and rhyolitic magma. These different types of magma differ based on their chemical composition, their viscosity, and their temperature. There are different mechanisms for magma formation: partial melting, decompression melting, and flux-induced melting. When magma breaks through the earth’s surface, the magma that reaches the surface is called lava.

About me: My name is Maria Baias and I’m a scientist turned Sci-Fi/Fantasy writer. While teaching a university course on Inorganic Chemistry, I became fascinated by minerals and rocks and the role they play in shaping interesting geological formations. That, combined with my research background in Heritage Science are what led to my interests in using science to explore and understand the wonders of our planet. I’m happy to share those stories with the rest of the world through this channel and my blog: www.mariabaias.com/blog
