There are many different kinds of magnesium that you can purchase, and each has it's own "superpower". In this video I discuss what is magnesium citrate, and how you can use it to promote regular bowel movements, which helps your natural systems of detoxification.
Your body dumps a LOT of toxins into your gut which is eliminated (detoxified) through your poop - and the longer that poop stays in your body, the longer the toxins can be REABSORBED back into your body! NOT GOOD! Research shows that women who pooped less than twice a day had 4 times increased risk for breast disease!! Toxic estrogen is excreted from your body through your poop, which would explain this research finding.

I use Mg Citrate for about a month already. By a mistake. But I haven't noticed much change in my poo. But I noticed that my cramps are kinda back. Thanks for clarification that Mg Citrate does not get absorbed into the body. That's a key for my case. I have to switch to a different type of Mg.

The worst that can happen with one dose that's too much is lots of loose stools - especially if one is constipated there will be a 'catch up' period where lots will come out. This is good to know so it's not surprising once it starts happening! Best of luck - when I get super constipated I sometimes need 400mg two to three times a day for a few days then once it starts coming out I have to spend dedicated time in the bathroom. Hope this helps!

Could it be because we often eat insoluble foods? please help us we are very constipated thanks

My heart goes out to you, constipation is terrible! There are so many reasons for constipation, it's hard to say exactly what your root causes are, however generally constipation requires ensuring you are optimally hydrated (around 2.5 L of water per day, see the 'How To' playlist on my KZfaq channel for how to naturally mineralize your water using Himalayan salt so it is more effective in hydrating), taking the magnesium citrate as often as you need to in order to clear the bowels, establishing a regular dose for maintenance after, and consulting with a naturopath or functional medicine doctor to identify your constipation root cause(s). Wishing you well!!

Generally speaking as long as it is working for constipation it can be taken. If one remains constipated on it, then one should stop and check in with a doctor as the body can then retain too much magnesium which can be harmful. Hope this helps!

Dr. Mills, can I take this long term ? If 350mg a day and it helps me poop, can I take it for months? If I check on google, it says not to take it more than 7 days. I was taking Senna laxatives but I also read this can’t be taken for too long either. If you can clarify please. I have never been regular and I’d like something I can take daily that is safe. Thank you

Hello! My understanding is that as long as one is pooping it can be taken long term. Senna can cause black colon so it is advised that it not be taken long term, there is no such known issue with magnesium citrate. I worked with patients with spinal cord injury who were on daily magnesium citrate for years with no issue, and also I did a systematic search of the literature and did not find any research suggesting that long term use would be a problem. Hope this helps!

Magnesium citrate is well absorbed by the digestive system. It is regarded as a highly soluble and readily bioavailable form of magnesium, with numerous in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrating its superior absorption and bioavailability compared to other forms such as magnesium oxide 1 2 . Magnesium citrate remains in solution even in simulated gastric fluid, and its high solubility in the intestinal tract leads to high concentrations of ionic magnesium, enhancing its bioavailability 1 . Additionally, it is one of the most popular types of magnesium supplements and is easily absorbed by the body, making it a preferred choice for replenishing magnesium levels and treating conditions such as constipation

Less so - it is better absorbed into the body so works in the tissues like the muscles, however if you take too much then some can spill out into the gut and cause loose stools. Hope this helps!

@dr.patriciamills
@dr.patriciamills 7 ай бұрын
Kidney failure is very different from a urinary tract infection. Kidney failure is detected on bloodwork with a rise in creatinine and a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). UTIs usually resolve without causing kidney failure, your doctor knows how to test for this. Hope this helps!

Can magnesium citrate cause your bowels to be dependent on it? I all of the sudden became constipated. I never had issues. It seemed to happened overnight. My intestinal transit is normal but it can be either hard or I have the urge and I go and nothing happens . I have done all the test to rule out serious conditions and I am perfectly healthy. Everything I try works until it doesn’t. For instance, miralax, inulina fiber, probiotics. I am now on magnesium citrate and it is working but I read somewhere that it can cause your bowels to become dependent on it. Well that is an issue I do not need add to my list of issues. Hmmm I looked into the research and it has never been a documented side effect. The only reference I found was in an online news source that did not provide any references. It can be a problem with senna products like sennakot, however there is currently no evidence that Mg citrate use long term will cause dependency. If it continues to be used while the person remains super constipated then it can cause the body to retain more magnesium which could be problematic, however this is very rare and only reported once in the literature as far as I am aware. Hope this helps!

This helps, thank you! Webmd and medical news today along with Dr Axe say it will cause laxative dependency. Unless I am misunderstanding Sometimes I feel like I don’t know what to believe anymore. I am going to continue using magnesium citrate although I am struggling to find the right dosage. It is either not enough or way too much. What is the dose you suggest starting with?

Is it good for Gastritis?
@dr.patriciamills
@dr.patriciamills 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, for gastritis you need to identify the root causes of the inflammation in the gut, the reason for the "itis", which for most people is one or a combination of eating foods that don't agree with you, physical/emotional stress that interferes with proper stomach function including stomach acid production. While you work on figuring that out, magnesium bisglycinate would be a better option as that is better absorbed by the body and can help make energy to heal from the gastritis. If you have constipation AND gastritis, then yes, the magnesium citrate can help with the constipation, and I often have my clients on a mix of different kinds of magnesium depending on the conditions experienced. It would probably be additionally helpful for you to connect with a naturopathic doctor or functional medicine doctor to help guide you - gastritis is 100% reversible with the right approach!
