Thank You for interesting review! I think the concept is underrated so much. I thought the idea was to improve "stationary mobility" of inhabitants. So people could relocate more easily by having a lot of standartised cores to re-attach their capsules to. Following not only building's metabolism, but first of all metabolism of it's inhabitans. As people evolve through being single, couple, family with kids and then back to retirement, they could add or remove capsules into/from their household (also gradually replacing worn out capsules; just like people replace their old cars today). Also changing location of capsules to one that suits their current needs best (e.g. job, school, etc.) if needed. Today relocating is a nightmare - so much legwork, which could be totally avoided by moving capsules with everything inside at once. This is like the reinvention of the Dutch hook (the typical hook on the roof of houses in The Netherlands, used to avoid using steep house ladders to carry in/out the luggage), but on a new scale. I see why Nakagin Capsule Tower did not become a success, but I don't understand why the concept was not re-worked, improved and polished to finally become part of our routine lifestyle. My gut feeling is that the concept would be more viable if the cores were rather a full slots for the capsules to make capsule design and requirements as minimal, as possible (to reduce strength requirements, environment insulation, etc.). And obviosly moving bathroom to the core's side - I guess, this is the viable compromise for such a great concept. P.S. Sorry, for long comment. Nakagin Capsule Tower was so inspiring in practicality. So sorry to see how things turned out.

Hey Alexey 👋 I share your concerns in regards to mobility of inhabitants. It could certainly be an extremely convenient method to employ when relocating, though it would require the place you're moving to, to have a compatible structure to accommodate your capsule 🤔 As to why the movement didn't catch on, I suppose the global culture and view in the 90s weren't that accepting towards these kinds of drastic, over the top inventions. Even though it would've proved to be highly efficient. I could see Metabolism make a comeback in the mid 21st century or maybe earlier. In the era of SpaceX, Tesla, NFTs, Bitcoin poppin off, the world we live in now is more experimental and open-minded. I could see it being used on Mars when we start having people live there. We might need structures that are highly efficient, cost effective, resilient, and adaptable over there. But the old concepts would definitely need to be revised and developed. Nonetheless, it's definitely a niche in architecture that is worth looking into!

@@nickvsarch Yes, You are right. People are buying normal apartments anyway, so why bother taking extra risks and engineering challenges. Yes, similar issue like the one electric vehicles are facing - people will not buy electric vehicle unless the charging infrastructure is sufficient, and charging infrastructure remains undeveloped, because demand is too low, because no one drives EV. So somehow the concept should be attractive from day one, with just one core, with no apparent advantage of unified cores and capsules. Thinking of it again, just one core and a few extra spare capsules could be already useful. New owner could use spare capsule(s) for all necessary preparations to move-in while the capsule is on the ground (any repair, maintanance, design, furnituring works; also probably brining in partially belongings before lifting the capsule), so later at specified date-time old capsule can be extracted from the slot of the core and the new one swiftly slotted into it's place. Assuming it is as easy, as lifting shipping containers, delivered by the ground. So the crane needs to be built-in onto the core to make lifting easy. So if it will be in use in a single instance and if more instances will emerge later, then maybe in the long run it will transform into a new business model, with unified capsules and a lot of involved companies doing it's own part - building cores, building/refurbishing/delivering/recycling capsules. Maybe businesses will see it as an opportunity to offer more additional value to customers - better and nicer capsule-apartment, otherwise too expensive to be made in-place. Not just cheaper thanks to mass-production, but also adding value people would be looking for. In the end maybe even individual houses will be affected by the trend and will become equipped with slots too. Recalling Tesla - yes, 1st instances should be somehow advertised as luxury, before it will be ready to go mainstream. But luxury and living in a "shipping containers" may be hard to combine :) Still this is interesting concept to contemplate. Like a brain exercise. Thanks for brining it up!

I appreciate the concise presentation. You highlighted the major points, and precedents while also providing us with context without being overly long winded. I think your points were digestible and avoided the use of archi-speak. While you may cringe at the interruptions in your speech, they were small bumps that weren't noticeable compared to the medium and content of your presentation. I think with time intentional practice those small bumps will smoothen out. I would encourage you to make more videos. You seem quite proficient in breaking things down in a clean and essential way :)

just the videos i was looking for, im currently on a school project this semester in my university and i was hoping to implement metabolic architecture on the dorms for the school. The drainage issues are happening because they're inside the capsules if i'm not mistaken, i'm planning to put it inside the core of the structure. if you have any thoughts about it please let me know
@nickvsarch
@nickvsarch 3 жыл бұрын
I couldn't find any info on the drainage systems of the projects mentioned 😕. I would assume that the capsules on the nakagin tower have some way of draining the water on the roof since there's a gap in between the units where water can get in... The practice of interchanging building components is intriguing indeed, but it creates gaps in the building envelope that needs to be detailed correctly. Not to mention the structural limitations of cantilvering components. I think these both would be interesting areas you could look into ☺. Another direction in metabolism I could see working out is by incorporating an expandable space frame structure acting as a platform for capsules(look into the capsule dwelling in the roof of the festival plaza in the Osaka Expo 1970, & check out La Ville Spatiale by Yona Friedman, Buckminster Fuller Geodesic Dome). Best of luck mate!

I don't like the tendency I see to dismiss the Metabolist movement because it is not successful as a "replacement" for conventional architecture. It's not ever going to be the family home of the future, but it's important to create options to that paradigm in the pursuit of sustainability. In manufacturing centers, college towns, just as an available option in urban environments. There have been several points in my life, particularly in my youth, when the Nakagin tower would have been ideal for my needs, and it disappoints me that I was forced to spend more of my resources than I could afford to purchase accommodation that I didn't need or use, simply because there are no options like these available. * Also, the issues that made Nakagin tower untenable were 100% minor flaws in the design of the tower (and the leaky pods!) stemming from the fact that it was a pilot project, and occurring mostly at interface points between the towers and pods. IF the towers had been designed so that all utility connections were accessible from within the hallways, and if the pods had been mounted maybe 40cm further apart, so that you could access the entire exterior, I believe they would still be there, and be too valuable as real estate to replace. People are living in internet cafes in Tokyo, if the internets not lying to me.

thank you for this. I'm a student of urban planning architecture in Thailand and I'm working on a project of a community mall using Metabolist Architectur concept. I'm studying this. I want you to give me advice please. thank you! : )
@nickvsarch
@nickvsarch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Natthakan, you could start by thinking about areas of the mall would benefit from having the ability to expand/reorganise/adapt. Then group programs that are unlikely to undergo any future changes together. The Yamanashi Broadcasting Center by Tange I talked about in the video is a good precedent, so is the Tokyo Bay Plan by Tange as well, though never realised, you might pick up a thing or two from the concepts... You could also look into expanding space frame structure, which was the main feature in the Osaka Expo 1970. It covered the entire festival plaza/symbol zone with only for columns! They had capsules embedded into the lattice frames as well which was pretty cool. I think the concept originated from Friedman in Ville Spatiale. Although if you're thinking of building expanding structures, try to take into account the future structural requirements as well. The Takara Beautillion by Kurokawa was just for show, it couldn't support any more capsules even it wanted to. But the Yamanashi project by Tange did account for future offices. Try to think of how it could work in real life rather than just a school project, it's not easy tho haha.. Maybe you could look into construction details of the Ise Shrine in Japan. It's constructed with traditional timber joinery and is torn down and rebuilt every 20 years since 4 BCE(or thereabouts). Do share with me if you encounter any breakthroughs! Good luck 👍

I came to this video at random after hearing about the capsul residence and I was simply curious about the origins of the idea that led to that structure. I am not an architect, but I do study environmental engineering and mechanical engineering of energy technologies. From my perspective this can actually be a solution to the rea issue contruction section has put onto the table of the increasing negative imprints of the environmental crisis.As long as you can keep a base struction with long longevity going with the precontruction needed for future mods to be added, you could develop it to a base for short-lived contruction made by recyclable materials. Pretty much if you have a city with high amount of carbon material wastes, you could work out on a motabolist base structure that would utilize containers made out of recycled carbon that would have a lifespan of 5-10 years, this would be a sustainable way of balancing out the high production (it may has) with a modern contruction that can be either a tourist trap or a showcase of high-level engineering.
@nickvsarch
@nickvsarch 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how would we address the additional loading when more modules are added. The base structure would have accommodate a predetermined loading in the initial construction. But if there's more modules than anticipated being added, we would have to beef up the base structure. How would we tackle that issue? I have no idea...
@gaarakabuto1
@gaarakabuto1 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickvsarch I don't know how you went throught my comment, it was a mess. Anyway what I was trying to say is that if there is a reliable plan for a base structure that can host 10-25 modules and you can produce these modules through wastes of the construction industry with even a short lifespan of 5 years for each module you can get a reliable plan of an efficient and sustainable metabolistic construction. For example let's say that you are able to build a base structure that has a hall and a staircase that connects to every future module with all the needed utilities (heat, water and electricity which I don't know how possible that is) with max capacity of hosting 10 modules (4 on each floor, this is a hypothetical scenario either way). If you can build the modules reliably from, lets say, wind turbines wastes (when wind turbines are withdrawn they are known to be excelent recyclable materials for shelters) and let's say cement powder (that you get in big quantities when you knock down old buildings and after a fair amount of processing it can be used as construction material again) you get yourself a highly sustainable construction plan that takes into consideration major elements that architecture is facing right now. Some of them buing longevity (as long as the base structure can hold for 50 yeras+ you are good I'd guess), you utilise major wastes that are hard to be reused but do have reusable properties and you provide a relatively low-cost alternative for an average resident you check most boxes (at least from the perspective of my profession). Hope this one makes a little bit more sense.

So Yes it can work but has to be guided by someone with the vision. however most of the founders have most passed and when in the structure's lifetime would you like to go through the renewal? From what i understand Kurokawa wanted to reform/repair the Nakagin tower but ideas fell through after he passed. Thank you for the video. I really enjoyed it. I hope i get round to reading the Metabolist manifesto at some point.

Yeah you definitely need a team that shares the same vision to be able to accomplish visionary projects like these. It would've been difficult to connect with like-minded people back then since the internet wasn't a big deal yet. From what I read online, the cost of replacing a capsule was not worth it, and the owners preferred to rent/buy a flat in the city. Though the cost was not explained, I assumed it would've been greatly reduced if the production was at scale.

Its not viable because its not optimal for living in. Those are people cages not apartments. They are too small and too poor a quality to not be seen as slum living. With need for optimization and cost cutting to make more for less we often cut into what is the minimum of dignified living conditions for a human. If its nor met the human will moove out if he can or become bitter and resentful of his living conditions.. This is why most of modern living spaces dont work out for many people. Least of all for someone who wants to have a workspace in his home. Modern apartments barely fit a 2+1 family let alone have a spot for the parents to work. No joke they give a space for a desk for the kid but adults dont even have a desk planned for in their new small house... I think its a sign of corporate dystopia where all you can do is work at the office and after work just watch tv...
