Its not viable because its not optimal for living in. Those are people cages not apartments. They are too small and too poor a quality to not be seen as slum living. With need for optimization and cost cutting to make more for less we often cut into what is the minimum of dignified living conditions for a human. If its nor met the human will moove out if he can or become bitter and resentful of his living conditions.. This is why most of modern living spaces dont work out for many people. Least of all for someone who wants to have a workspace in his home. Modern apartments barely fit a 2+1 family let alone have a spot for the parents to work. No joke they give a space for a desk for the kid but adults dont even have a desk planned for in their new small house... I think its a sign of corporate dystopia where all you can do is work at the office and after work just watch tv...

I'm here doing my graduate degree because I'm interested in researching and working on humanitarian architecture and community oriented design system. I was tired of doing conceptual projects in conventional architecture schools and I wanted to learn the process of taking a project from concept to construction. There are plenty of labs here in the design field, like product design, landscape, computational design, furniture, etc. Each led by a professor who specialises in that field. I find it more fruitful to learn under a professor for an extended period of time, rather than jumping between guest tutors. In Keio, architecture is more experimental, idk about other unis in Japan.

Hi! Thank you very much for this video. It makes you want to be part of the Japanese hustle and bustle! I'm Daniel, 22, and I recently started learning Japanese. I'm currently doing a master's degree in architecture in France🇫🇷. In 2 weeks' time, I'll be in Tokyo for a simple trip✈️🗼. I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet a pen pal who might like to learn French at the same time. This kind of exchange is used a lot to boost the desire to learn. After my studies, my aim is to do an internship in Japan. Here's my chance to meet people here 🙋 Let me know if you're curious about it

Thanks a lot for all the content you post here about the research lab. I don't know if you are aware if Kobayashi Sensei is at vacations right now, or if professors have return to their duties? I would be very gratefull if you could let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Kobayashi-san is still in tokyo. Spring semester ended about three weeks ago but some of our lab projects are still ongoing. In mid-september, Kobayashi-san will be heading to Morocco and Turkey on a study/relief research trip with some students. For the upcoming Fall semester at Keio, he will be teaching at Harvard GSD and our Lab together. Hope that answers ur questions.

I've been trying to find a graduate architecture student that study in Japan because I want to know how the work culture there. Is it mainly on research or we do have like design subject as well just like in the UK?

Architecture school at Keio is very unique because it's a mixture of design studio, laboratory group projects, and personal research. As for myself, I'm a graduate student, therefore I have to produce my own research to fulfill my degree requirements. On top of that, we gotta acquire a certain amount of credits to graduate. We're allowed to take any sort of classes, ranging from socioeconomic, to music, to traditional japanese cultural studies, etc. It doesn't have to be architecture related. So that means you can choose design studio classes, which are the conventional conceptual design classes. Lab projects depend on what the lab's theme is about, and also depends on the professor's field of interest. Sometimes the professor has some projects that the members can work on, sometimes the lab members can propose a project, based on what they think is needed in the current society. For example, some of our lab members are working on revitalizing a rural town in Japan due to the ongoing population decline issue. I've been working on some humanitarian shelter projects for the past few months led by prof Kobayashi. We're hoping to utilize it for the Ukraine war refugees. The Kobayashi lab is an extremely collaborative environment, you would love the studio culture if you decide to join us! Hope that answers ur question haha

I don't like the tendency I see to dismiss the Metabolist movement because it is not successful as a "replacement" for conventional architecture. It's not ever going to be the family home of the future, but it's important to create options to that paradigm in the pursuit of sustainability. In manufacturing centers, college towns, just as an available option in urban environments. There have been several points in my life, particularly in my youth, when the Nakagin tower would have been ideal for my needs, and it disappoints me that I was forced to spend more of my resources than I could afford to purchase accommodation that I didn't need or use, simply because there are no options like these available. * Also, the issues that made Nakagin tower untenable were 100% minor flaws in the design of the tower (and the leaky pods!) stemming from the fact that it was a pilot project, and occurring mostly at interface points between the towers and pods. IF the towers had been designed so that all utility connections were accessible from within the hallways, and if the pods had been mounted maybe 40cm further apart, so that you could access the entire exterior, I believe they would still be there, and be too valuable as real estate to replace. People are living in internet cafes in Tokyo, if the internets not lying to me.
