I was born and raised in the United States. I live in California.
-- How many years have you been teaching?
Over 20 years.
-- What qualifications do you have?
I have a Master's degree in linguistics with an emphasis in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
-- What languages do you speak?
English is my native language. I've studied Spanish, Czech, French, a little German, and Portuguese. I speak Portuguese as my second language because my husband is from Brazil.
-- Do you teach online?
I have a full-time teaching job at a college in California, so I don't currently offer English lessons online. However, I may do that in the future, so check back!
-- Can you recommend good books for English learners?

Hi, thanks for this video, I'm not a native speaker and I did'nt have anny idea about syllables and stressed words so my score was 18/25, but it was 13/15 from the part & and 2

That's great! Now you know something about syllables and word stress :) It's an important part of pronunciation and not hard to learn

Thanks to your extremely helpful test, I've just realized that I need to go over the syllable rules. The other categories I nailed them without any difficulty, fortunately. Like you and almost the rest of the world, I've been extremely busy at work lately. Today, for instance, was one of those days I didn't know where to start. Lots to do and so little time. Other than that, just the same ole, same ole. The week barely started out and I'm already looking forward to the weekend - I always am! Ha! Good to hear from you as well. Hello Jenna! My score is 24/25. I grasped "suit" instead of "soot", partly because I didn't know the word soot (but now I do). I also had a hard time distinguishing the words "letter" and "ladder", but eventually I made it. What happens with this couple of minimal pairs is quite interesting to me: if I listen to one of them out of any context it's challenging, while I have no doubt when they are pronounced back to back. Anyway, thanks so much for your lessons, they're always extremely clear, helpful, and pleasant to watch!👍

Great job! Thanks for sharing! Yes, minimal pairs are quite challenging because they're out of context, and I'm sure it would be no problem to distinguish them if you heard more than one word. Of course native speakers can hear them very easily, so they are good training for language learners to sharpen their ears and think about what makes the sounds different. Soot is not a common word, but it sounds different from suit because the latter has that tense /uw/ sound. 😀

@@LearnAcademicEnglish Yes, but I have to watch the video again; 1)ladder 2)soot 3)interesting 4)strengthen 1)ladder : I made mistake with options and I thought that the word "latter" was in the options.😅 2)soot : I haven't seen this word before.😶 3)interesting : I thought that it has 4 syllables (in-te-res-ting). 4)strengthen : I thought it has 3 syllables (st-reng-then).

The "soot" one was tricky because it's not a common word. However, I was hoping that people would be able to notice that it didn't sound like "suit" which has a long /uw/ as in "food." "Interesting" was tricky, but I tried to emphasize that it should be based on how I said it, not what it looks like. That word can have different pronunciations, but I said it with 3 syllables, which is a very common way to say it 😀
