Partly, "Rholihlahla" means "troublemaker" which is why Ms Mdingane asked for a Christian name. But, one the other hand, we Africans had to have a pronounceable name by whites. I don't understand how Trevor mispronounced the name. It's "Rh" pronounced with a throaty phonetic "ch" for Achmed in Arabic, not "R". And I say this because I'm Mpondo and Xhosa speaking, Trevor is half-Xhosa too but grew up speaking IsiZulu in Soweto. But his nana was Xhosa, so I don't know why.
@NonanoN-er6de
@NonanoN-er6de Жыл бұрын
It is originally Ahmad. That's an arabic name. Achmed is a foreign pronunciation- turks/russians etc.

I'm literally South African, and everyone refers to him as Nelson, as did he. Who are you to tell US what he wants to be refered by? I call him Nelson Mandela, as does everyone at in South Africa, yet we all know and can pronounce Rolihlahla. We don't use all three names because that's obviously unnecessary. There's no problem in calling him Rolihlahla only, but that's not what the man himself did, and you're in no authority to tell anyone else to.

Sad to say that still happens in African countries. You can't baptize your child if they don't have a Christian name. My theory is, what does a name have to do with anything. I could be more holy than someone my age that calls them self Jesus, or Mohammed. Its ridiculous I think. This is why I applaud Nigerians... They'll have 20 names and none of them Christian or white.

I remember watching news footage from South Africa, with police thrashing protestors with sjambok (rhino-hide) whips, and the rows over the sport/cultural boycott of the apartheid regime. SA is not perfect now, but the relief when that system ended was palpable. I even got to see Mandela speak in Trafalgar Square, even if he wasn't really called Nelson! :-)

Well, actually what Trevor said is only partially true. It is true, that giving the black people "christian names" was also because they didnt know how to pronounce the african words, but there's also a deeper meaning to it. Slaves were baptized and given another name too. Because, remember, the slavery apologetics was that they were saving the black people, so, by giving them a christian name, and teaching them how to be christian, they were actually saving them from going to eternal damnation, and, of course, they needed to atone of their sins of their blood and skin by being slaves. The whole "christian name" has layers of opression that are too far and wide to even say in this one KZfaq comment.
@Evija3000
@Evija3000 5 жыл бұрын
Well my country is predominantly Christian since the late middle ages, but it was still customary to gain a christian name when being baptised like 80 years ago. Nothing to do with oppression, just a weird tradition, probably rooted in the Bible where some followers of Jesus were given new names. Of course it can be used as a form of oppression, but I don't think the idea itself is purely oppressive.
@jim3vdm
@jim3vdm 5 жыл бұрын
Except that Trevor comes from a country where slavery ended officially over a century ago and the practice of renaming black people with English names was pretty much entirely, as he says, a racially driven piece of power politics. Supported in cases by churches but as a power dynamic rather than a soul-saving one.

No, I am not. I know that, today, "denigrate" is a synonym of "belittle" and when people say "You are denigrating someone" it doesn't mean " You are turning that person black ", but the root of this word is pretty telling about the colonial past. I'm not saying "ban the word denigrate". Denigrate is a sympton, not the cause. You can make a case for people to stop saying the world "denigrate" and explain the history behind the word, yes, but that's beyond the point.
@NegSteLucie
@NegSteLucie 5 жыл бұрын
Eros Viana This was merely another element of deracination. The so called Christian names have almost nothing to do with Christianity. They are European names. The whole point was to divorce Africa people form their identities and to create identity confusion which then made them easier to manipulate. This is why we see so many Africans running around with ridiculous be names like Good luck Johnathan and Goodwill etc and rejecting beautiful b nsmes like Ngozi and Nneka.
