I found this video to be incredibly informative! I was diagnosed 7 years ago with Schizophrenia and I suffer from paranoid delusions that have affected both my personal and professional life. My first experience with psychosis happened after the unexpected passing of my dad that left me a caregiver for my chronically ill mom and adolescent brother. On my moms side of the family there are multiple family members who lived with or currently do live with a Schizophrenic diagnosis, leading us to believe that maybe we carry a gene like you mentioned. I look for videos like these to teach me about ME, while also learning how I may support others with similar conditions. This is the best video I’ve personally found on the Internet about paranoid schizophrenia. The amount of facts and numbers you presented were remarkable and eye opening. I feel like this video afforded me a bit of healing in my own journey. Thank you so much for creating these free resources and a space where I feel comfortable being human 🙂

I should probably see a mental health professional, I'm in my late teens and about 4 months ago I've been experiencing a lot of these symptoms. Most prominently the lack of interest and trouble with memories, it seems like I want to do something I immediately forget it and cant focus enough to remember it. It also seems like I'm seeing things out of the corner of my eye very often even when I'm alone. Thank you for the excellent video.

I was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic back in 1982. A friend came back into my life and told me about natural healing, also that they may have diagnosed me to protect the harassers where I worked and to make me the scapegoat. A person speaking up and protecting themselves will be called up in front of company psychiatrists and then have a label assigned. While on the drug and being required to consume it as a threat to keep my job made me think I was actually hearing voices. After a year of being on the antipsychotic Perphenazine, I decided to taper off the drug and eventually went off it 6 months later. The company fired me, so good riddance to my abusers, that was 1984. I have lead a good life and still do without psychiatry and its toxic poisons. From then till now I have worked, bought my own home, and have had normal relationships. I do not need psychiatry to define me, or to tell me I need antipsychotics to function.

Idk why watching this has made me a bit more comfortable about trying to talk to people more about my health, so thank you. I think having someone explain this in such a calm and kind of matter of fact but also caring manner is weirdly comforting. I'm almost 17 and the first time I remember hallucinating when I was around 12 I think it was and over a year ago I had an overdose. I didn't find out until a bit later on that the reason I even tried to commit was because I thought I was put into a simulation after having a blood test done at the doctors, thinking they put something in a cup of water to knock me out and then injected me with some random crap. I messaged my friend a bit before going on a jumbled rant on how I was going to prove to myself I was in the simulation by dying there so I could be resuscitated and bought back into reality kinda thing. Literally none of it makes sense and my Dr's didn't believe me either because being 15 is too young apparently. My new dr asked about this and i explained what happened, explained that the scars ony arms were from when I tried to cut out every single spot that came up because I though it was from "them" (no clue who them was) and whole heartedly believed I was being followed for about 2 weeks. He put this down to autism and moved on so I can't even get an actual test for the hallucinations and delusions until I'm 18 cause I can't talk to my dad about it. I also can't talk to my family either, one of my cousins was schizophrenic, his sister has d.i.d and their mother had bipolar and he did alot of illegal and violent stuff, so now when anything remotely relayed to any disorder of theirs or similar, it gets shunned right away, my mum believed me, but now she's in hospital and won't understand things like that anymore. Basically just relying on my friend, it helps with grounding and keeping me calm, like if I'm with her and I start hearing or seeing stuff that's harder to ignore she just finds way to prove its not real without making me feel like an idiot. Again, thank you for this video, it's comforting how you've explained it knowing that some people out there are accepting of these kind of disorders and want to raise awareness of it. Its nice knowing not everyone's like my doctors who put everything down to autism without questioning too. Thankyou

I'm 17 and I relate. I haven't been able to talk about my schizophrenic episodes with anyone even my psychiatrist and therapist for 2 years. I know they are doctors but I still felt unsafe with them. I am finally able to open up to them and talk about my episodes little by little. I experienced my first psychotic episode at 15 and like you I started hallucinating at 12 to. It really destroyed me and my confidence. I was in a psychiatric hospital at 15 and I still felt unsafe in any building. Glad to see people my age tbh.

People can get hallucinations if they use certain street drugs. Also people can get them when going off to sleep and on waking up (that in-between sleep and awake state). People can also get hallucinations of a loved one who has recently died. The thing with schizophrenia is that people think that the hallucinations are real. This is because of a lack of insight. Let your parents/teacher/a trusted adult know what you are experiencing.

Describes me to a T. Was diagnosed when I was a teenager. Am on the highest dose of antipsychotics being Quetiapine XL also known as Zaluron XL 800mg per night. I still see n hear & feel stuff mainly at night which pees me off. Not much during the day though. But without meds my life was absolutely hell, Just wanted to kill everyone all the time. So I refused to go out & kept myself to myself. Now though I am learning how to cope with it. I get tired easily & bored vey quickly. Certain people ruffle my feathers & I just leave them to it & walk off. I live in supported living where I have staff here 12 hours a day, every day of the yr. I go out for two or three hours everyday whether it’s raining, sun shining or snowing. My support time is a valuable tool & asset. I just do not like being labelled as a schizo nutter. Some People without mental health problems like to bully those with. I’m like a loaded cannon with a very short fuse. Stand well back & don’t ignite it as I will end you.

I'm 48 years old and I've been diagnosed 20 years ago with severe depression and anxiety. Now that my wife and I are separated I'm a complete mess. All I can think about is my parents dying and think about death constantly. Now it's getting to the point where I can't sleep at night even when I take xanax it's very difficult. I'm in my room right now and I feel like I'm somebody else laying in my bed because I can't comprehend that I'm not with her anymore and everything I do more than I look forward to I'm afraid of. Could this be a sign of schizophrenia? Any information would be helpful. Thank you and God-bless us all.

Hi Serapio. Thank you for sharing your story. Do you think you may be severely depressed again as a reaction to you and your wife separating? When some people get very depressed, they may have some psychotic symptoms. It is concerning that you aren't sleeping and thinking about death a lot. Have you had any suicidal thoughts? Please contact your doctor and also a friend to support you through this. Things will improve for you, but you are in a grieving process for the relationship you had.

Hi El Yousfi! Thank you for your post. I would suggest you see your doctor about your difficulties. However, here are a few of my thoughts. Heart racing may be caused by anxiety, and people with social phobia kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7CZkqai1b_eZ4k.html may feel they are being watched or judged, and thus isolate themselves. You haven't given me enough information to suggest you have psychotic symptoms. What do you mean by BPD? Borderline Personality Disorder or Bipolar Disorder? There is not enough information to suggest a mood disorder. The bit about not liking people and being jealous is probably part of your personality. All the best, Beth

Im 24 male recently i graduate 1 month ago and now i have my bachelor degree. My psychiatric diagnosed me with schyzoprenia paranoid. I used olanzapine for 2 years close to 3 years and still go on as my medication. The problem i face now are i can't express my thoughts, fear to talk to people, hard to concentrate, very shy, feels dumb everytime, when people give me question im still processing and long time to answer, not focus, always makes mistake, always try to be nice to others and dont want to hurt their feeling, always say sorry, always feel like something stuck in my head like heavy but not like dizzy and not hurt. Back then when before i take my antipsychotic and the first time im not feeling well (others call it "sick" But i dont want to call it that way) i feel like i have power like control the weather i feel like i have very strong physique and not fear of anything even i want to fight people, in my neighborhood all dogs gathered in one place i bark to like 10 dogs first, they bark me back i bark them back again and it feels very good and makes me happy and excited, always walking and talking nonsense non stop 24/7 in any place, my sleep only 1 or sometimes 2 hours everyday, Right now Even though i feel all of that in my mind i dont want to call it sick im try to be postive just try to change it to be better. Cause negative mind will make it worse. Do you think that feeling will gone and be normal? How to fix it? Sorry this is my second languange

I can't even begin to know how to feel about how rapidly she declined , going deeper and deeper and even deeper into non-existent rabbit holes made up somewhere in her mind. @DrBethColby

That is a good question, Ligma. If a person lacks insight - ie they do not believe they are ill when they are - which is one of the symptoms of schizophrenia, it is difficult to help them as they do not think they need it. That is unfortunately why people with schizophrenia are sectioned for either their health, safety or safety of others. Best wishes, Beth

Are negative symptoms due to illness or the anti psychotic medicine ?
@DrBethColby
@DrBethColby 29 күн бұрын
That is a very good question. The negative symptoms are part of the illness, but the medication will probably have some effect as well. It slows down a person's physical movements for a start, and the side effects may cause other negative-like symptoms, for example affecting cognitive functioning. However, the drug Clozapine can treat the negative symptoms and doesn't have all the side effects of the typical antipsychotics, so the negative symptoms are likely to be part and parcel of the original disorder.

Why do the symptoms of negative schizophrenia sound the same as depression?
@DrBethColby
@DrBethColby 11 ай бұрын
Hi there. Thank you for your post. The negative symptoms of schizophrenia do sound the same as depression, and it is important not to miss depression in people with schizophrenia. I ask people how their appetite and sleep are; how their mood is (if they are not depressed, they will say so), any suicidal ideas, hopes for the future, etc. If I am really not sure, then a trial of an antidepressant may be worth considering. If there is no effect after 2-3 weeks, this can be stopped. Best wishes, Beth

The truth about all of this is that we need a more loving home and societal environment - the modern nuclear family has created, essentially insanity, because the whole idea of it is insane, and only there to serve commerce. You cannot be living an insane life that is not connected to the truth and reality of life, and expect to be mentally healthy. These disorders do not exist in societies or communities that still understand what human beings need to function. We are tribal entities, and without a tribe we will suffer varying stages of mentís illness. The share number of people currently living alone without any real networks of care or interaction is astounding and so what can we expect when people are essentially living in prison like environments of their own making of societies making it’s just right in front of your face, but no one really wants to look at the systemic problems of modern European or “western” life.

I have Schizophrenia and my doctors opinion is that i have Paranoid Schizophrenia and i am paranoid everywhere. Like in my mind when walking outdoors i often see like images in my head where a person who is walking past me pulls out a knife and stabs me in the stomach and then casually walking past me and sometimes i have images where i stab someone walking past me. But i never act out with violence. I am a peaceful human being. I often have very dark thoughts and i try to mitigate this by praying to god. And it feels a bit better when i do. I also have psychosis, ADHD and Post traumatic stress and i have been diagnosed with Panic anxiety too years ago but that have dissapeared by itself after a year or more but life is very hard for me. My schizophrenia and psychosis isn't as severe as it once was but my perception of reality is distorted. And indoors i often walk around the apartment looking for an intruder eventhough there is none. And when i walk around where there is people that doesn't know me they get uncomfortable around me and walk over to the other side and avoid me which hurts my feelings. That happens often nowadays. I feel like people who doesn't know me think of me as being a creep or something. But in reality i am a victim of sexual abuse. I have been sexually abused several times and i am 100% certain that is what gave me my worst disorders.

My brother is hearing voices, thinking he's being followed everywhere by hundreds of people all over the city, believes his neighbors are sending signals through his walls and shocking him through the floor to torment him, he believes no matter where he goes they follow find and torment him, he thinks his family and friends are involved, he believes our decieced father of 3 years is still alive and is involved, he thinks they have bugged his car, he believes they are messing with his appliances in his apartment and he believes that it's military special forces, FBI and extremely intelligent people doing all this. None of his stories add up when you ask questions. He gets extremely agitated and upset when you question any of this. Probably more but I think you get it. He truly believes this is real when there is no evidence at all. How do we help him when he finds excuses not to get help?

Are you in the US? In the UK we can organise an assessment under the Mental Health Act. The other thing you could do is suggest that he talks to his doctor about the stress he is under because of his experiences. So he is not getting help for the experiences, but the stress the experiences cause. Then the doctor would be able to prescribe him medication if he agrees, which could include an antipsychotic as it can be used to decrease anxiety and stress as well as being used for psychosis.

@TalkMentalHealthbyDrBethColby Thanks for answering. I'm in the U.S. He said he made an appointment with a psychiatrist but it's hard to believe him. He thinks everyone is out to kill him now. He's been on the run for the last couple of days and is afraid to go back to his apartment. I just talked to him and made sure he knows that he needs to keep his appointment but he doesn't trust anyone. I told him I'd go with him but he thinks I'm behind all of this. It's really bad.

Ya know? I told my mom that I got into it with a group of musicians from nashville. I live outside of Knoxville in tennessee. Okay? And I tell my mom that I believe these musicians were going to kill my family. And she gets worried. There was nothing for her to worry about. I was just scared for my family. And so she sticks me in a mental hospital in Knoxville by the name of lake shore that is no longer operatinf. And while I'm in there my mom calls me...at least she sounded like my mom. Not quite exactly. But???? I don't know... So while I'm talking to her a hear a gunshot. And I said what in good god was that and she says your dad just fell in the bathroom. I remember it like yesterday....anyways when I GRT home from out of the hospital my parents are different they looked the same and sounded not quite the same but they weren't exactly the same people. No one ever believed me. And these musicians were known as big and rich. I should know because I wrote the songs they had on the television. And remember I live in tennessee. I know one of the guys real names and I know who he is. But all this happened and when I got home from the hospital there was a blood stain on the bathroom wall that HD been cleaned up. I tried telling the police but since my dad was there and mom and everyone they didn't believe me. But my family has never been the same. That was twenty years ago. And now days one of them have anything to do with me but one brother and my dad. I never see anyone else and since then my mom has past away. So ya knos???? This hospital diagnosis me with having this disease just because I said someone was going to kill my family. So I see what your saying doc. but, truth is sometimes fiction...but get this...non fiction is sometimes truth. God rest their souls. And may he not have potty on these awful awful men.

I don’t think she knows what she is talking about. Because the disability doesn’t define the person who was diagnosed with it. Or how would someone give an accurate diagnosis without checking for medical problems like anemia especially. Because sometimes with medical problems would not live longer than someone with a person with a psychiatric disability necessarily
@DrBethColby
@DrBethColby 2 жыл бұрын
HI Laurie, thank you for your comment. I totally agree that a person is not defined by a mental or physical health condition. Psychiatrists first train as medical doctors and then go on to train in psychiatry. When a person is admitted to a psychiatric ward, as well as being asked about what medical conditions they have and what medication they are on, they have a full physical examination and a range of blood tests, and often also have an ECG (heart tracing). We look at physical, psychological and social predisposing factors for a mental health problem, as well as ones that may trigger a condition and and keep the person unwell. In outpatients, we can look up blood tests already done by the GP or request the GP to do them. Best wishes, Beth
