In this video, What is Propofol?, I examine and explain what Propofol is and how it works? I then briefly go into the safety of the drug to use in Anesthesia. One of the most well known of the anesthesia drugs, Propofol gained infamy with its involvement with the death of Michael Jackson
My name is Dr. Karen Francois and I am a 5th year Attending physician based out of NY. These stories will chronicle my life with Anesthesia, as an Anesthesiologist and home life with my husband and 3 children. Through these glimpses into my life I hope to inspire and motivate young women or men into seriously considering Anesthesia as a career choice.
I am a Doctor and I as born and raised in the projects of the Bronx NY and I made it to become of highly respected physician , if I can do it then any one else in my situation can do the same.

This stuff is awesome. I have a procedure every 2 years and always book it with this drug and an anesthesiologist. I’m scientifically inquisitive and I find this stuff a ball of fun. It usually knocks me out within seconds and I notice a split second of very blurred vision when it puts me out. Waking up is clear, and I notice slight euphoria the balance of the day. But one component this this video has wrong. You are not asleep, no way, it’s different....... with sleep there is the awareness of time passage. But with this drug, it’s lights out, then you wake up instantly. No awareness of time passage or anything else. Like you died, then woke up. Interesting stuff. I for one honestly love it.

I'm from brazil, I used this stuff once and when I wope up I was saying random stuff in English to the doctor, although we speak Portuguese here. I have no idea why that happened and I got scared I said something personal or sensitive there. LOL. Till this day the only thing I remember saying is that I was biting my sutures (???) and I remember one of the nurses laughing lol. Then I fell asleep again.

I am on four psych meds. I've had surgery three times in the past 20 years (orthopedic). I've never had problems with anesthesia with the exception of, I believe, interference with my psych meds, specifically clonazepam and Effexor. About 48 hours after surgery I go through a few days of Effexor & benzo withdrawal. All of my doctors say anesthesia doesn't block psych drugs but I disagree.

When I was a baby. 9 months old. I was in a car train accident with my father and I lost both my legs. One to the hip in the other above knee. Im 47 now..Over the years I've had over a hundred operations. Bone revisions skin grafts, stuff like appendix gallbladder. Now I'm going through horrible times in my arms being worn out and I've had like 30 elbow surgeries. I've had several back surgeries due to an arachnoid cyst. I've had a lot of surgery done to this body. My question is is suffer now with pretty bad depression. I have heard that being put to sleep that many times might be adding to my depression and why it's not getting better. Do you have any input on this would it be something you would consider doing a video on maybe? I'm suffering pretty bad with my depression and medications just not helping anymore. My chronic pains off the charts and we know that that into my depression also. I am wanting to understand if all these operations and anesthesia has contributed to my depression being the bad as it is. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm actually getting ready to go through two more operations. I have to have my right shoulder replaced and now I'm sitting all the time in my wheelchair I have developed an abscess and a fistula that must be repaired before in my shoulder. It seems like it never ends sometimes LOL. Anyway please I'm trying to figure this out and I'm running into Roblox everywhere

Often times some anesthesiologists administer Propofol, Versed (a hypnotic) and Rocuronium Aka. Roc (A paralytic). According to recent research the currently propofol formulas should not pose risk of anaphylaxis in people with egg allergies however you should check with your allergist to see if they offer skin testing with propofol if you are planning to have surgery. Here’s a quote from the British Journal of Medicine: “So where does this leave us? The situation in adults is straightforward: there is convincing evidence that propofol is safe in patients who are allergic to peanut and/or soy and/or egg. Further research is required before children who have experienced severe anaphylaxis to egg can be given propofol with confidence of safety.” Check out the link to this article academic.oup.com/bja/article/116/1/11/2566111

This always happens with general anesthesia though, no matter what anesthetics are used. You're also often times given a paralytic (like succinylcholine or rocuronium), which also impairs your ability to breathe on your own. If you're being put under general anesthesia, you will require mechanical ventilation until the end of the procedure and can breathe on your own again.

It’s very likely You won’t feel or remember a thing until it’s done. You might feel sleepy or groggy the rest of that day so don’t plan on doing anything difficult afterwards, and will fully recover by the next day. Don’t worry too much about it, but if you have concerns definitely ask the anesthetist about them. All the best to you!

I'm a Pharmacist and was prescribed Tramadol by a Doctor for a knee injury. After the second dose, I ended up looking like a big sweating strawberry! The skin irritation and itching were awful, and the profuse sweating even worse...Talk about side effects! I hope you get your problem sorted...Remember, only solutions come from recognising the problem....You've done that already, so you've started the process!! Good luck! 👍👍👍

@Naomi Henry hi Naomi. I also had a hysterectomy at age 29! My doctors did robotic surgery so just made small incisions and went in that way. Everything went fine and I am feeling so much better than prior to my surgery. You have had your surgery by now so I hope everything went ok and you are well on your way to healing! xoxo

I’ve had it 3 times so far. First, you start to feel a little chilly as it goes through your system. Then it literally feels like you’re starting to fall asleep, and then you blink and open your eyes and they start telling you the surgery is over! It’s the weirdest experience / strangest sensation but not a bad one.

Probably nothing. 2-3 drops isn't much (2-3 drops = ~0.15-0.2ml depending on the size of the drops, which is 0.015-0.02mg of propofol, if you have propofol emusion that's 10mg/ml; for procedural sedation like for a colonoscopy, a 185 lb adult would need ~30-40mg to start). But def not recommended that you do that.

Correct. So it acts to sedate by GABA agonism or increasing GABA’s effects of inhibition of signals within the central nervous system. Propofol decreases the rate of dissociation of the GABA from the receptor.

Are there any side effects of this drug in people with asthma or any heart problems, maybe more than other people? I am terrified to go under, I think Grey’s Anatomy did that to me lol.
@3anesthesiame40
@3anesthesiame40 3 жыл бұрын
TV will do that. With vigilant monitoring by a trained anesthesia provider, the short-lived side effects of low blood pressure, and decreased drive to breathe can be treated quickly and easily. Anyone with health conditions such as asthma or heart disease are at higher risk for anesthetic-related side effects however, a well-trained anesthesiologist can and will be able to manage that and provide you safe anesthesia! It’s what we do every single day. I hope that makes you feel a bit better ❤️ thanks for watching

All drugs have potential side effects. These anesthetic drugs are exceedingly safe and are used 10’s of millions of times each year without complications. Some patients conditions are such that they are sensitive to anesthetics. The key to a safe anesthetic is to insure the patient is optimized before surgery and to adjust dosages accordingly. And of course vigilance from your anesthetic provider

No it isn't! Propofol has No antidote! I had an unsedated colonoscopy with no pain. Propofol can increase your risk of bowel perforation by 26% when sedated for colonoscopies. Shocked that propofol is legal to use for such a minor procedure. Again there is No antidote if you run into problems.

Are you telling that this is how Michael Jackson died
@3anesthesiame40
@3anesthesiame40 4 жыл бұрын
He died from cardiac arrest and propofol was being administered to him in his home, so the drug was implicated as the likely cause..a large dose of prop typically stops people from breathing. If their breathing is not supported (like with mask or breathing tube ventilation), they will go into cardiac arrest due to lack of oxygen.
