Is there a recommended version of the dao de Jing? There are many different ones available, but not sure which ones are unaltered and without commentary. Thanks

it's just a few verses, you can read more than one translation and form your own image

I have more than a half dozen translations, but my favorite two are the Red Pine translation and the Stephen Mitchell translation. Stephen Mitchell was my first copy of the Dao De Jing; I find it quite poetic and accessible. I like the Red Pine translations of Chinese poetry, particularly Han Shan (Cold Mountain) and Shi Wu (Stonehouse). I like his nuances in the Dao De Jing and the interesting commentary from various sources he's included.

I have only had two versions, the Stephen Mitchell one and the Gia-Fu Feng/Jane English one. I saw someone else recommend the Stephen Mitchell one, I agree with what the commenter said but I will warn you it is not a true translation. It is Stephen Mitchell's rephrasing of other translations of the DDJ. The Gia-Fu Feng/Jane English version is a true translation by a native Chinese speaker and Taoist with help from his English speaking wife. It is commonly recommended as it's one of the closest translations and still pretty accessible. It does have and introduction and commentary, but the commentary is all written afterward, so the actual chapters are left untouched in the middle of the book.

I would suggest classes can give you much more then use online videos to aid or assist you to remember each form. My favourite is the animals. ☯️ 🙏 Amitofou
