A safety instrumented system (SIS) is a set of hardware and software controls that are used to take the process to a safe state when pre-determined conditions are violated
A SIS is separate from the basic process control system and is designed to provide protection for critical process systems, such as refineries, chemical, nuclear facilities.

Very good explanation just a little correction about the SIF assembly. Usually the SIS is not involved in controlling functions (like PIC) but just in simple acting (ON/OFF)

I agree with you in this. Also, safety action and control action needs to be segregated as they are two different layers of protection.
