I agree with HPB on the esoteric symbol of Satan or Lucifer being a bringer of knowledge. In many cultures before the Bible , the serpent was used as a symbol of spiritual energy and wisdom. We know that in Asia they are known to bring luck and good health as well as in Egypt a symbol of knowledge and power as it's worn on the crown or the pharaohs. The Jews borrowed alot of this ancient symbolism from other cultures and incorporated it into their own esoteric symbolism. Like pike said Lucifer is the bringer or light and gnosis , and he also spoke of how the writings of the Bible have many levels of different teachings that exist all within the same teaching. This was an amazing video . Your guest is very knowledgeable as well. 👍

I'm finding this fascinating, this is a favorite topic of mine and I've spent a lot of time looking into all the history, mythology and theory around Satan and Lucifer. Personally I differentiate between the two except for in the context of the word satan being a word that meant adversary as I view Lucifer as a Promethean figure who was adversarial to the pantheon of Gods by stealing the fire and gifting it to humanity. It took quite awhile before I thuroughly read and understood fully the Sumerian Corpus of LIterature but I think Lucifer goes all the way back to the figure "Ea Enki" of Sumerian Mythology... Ea Enki was the "Eldest and Wisest son of Anu" which would make him like the beloved son of God who was made perfect in all his ways until inequity was found in him... Within the Sumerian Mythology there's a feud that breaks out between the figures Enlil and Enki over the creation and fate of humanity... WIthin the Sumerian accounts of the Deluge story it said that Enlil was considered the chief of the Gods even though Enki was eldest and wisest. Enlil's Archetepe would represent a sort of Zeus archetype with him being considered the "Lord of The Sky". The Sumerian creation story states that Ea Enki created humanity with the Earth Goddess Ninhursag by placing the essence, blood, or fire of the gods into the red clay... The essence of an elder Anunnaki named either Apsu or Kingu depending on the Myth was used, which is sort of like "Stealing the Fire of The Gods" and "Gifting it to humanity". It's said that it was a major point when humans were created and they were created to toil for the Anunnaki. In a later myth it states that Enlil had become annoyed because humanity made too much noise when making love, which is an odd statement but sort of makes me think abou the censorship and strictness of the Church... Enlil decides to wipe out humanity by flood and Ea Enki goes to the Noah figure named either "Ziasudra" or "Utnapishtim" depending on whether the myth is Sumerian, Assyrian or Babylonian and warns him of the impending deluge, thus sparing humanity. I thuroughly read through every translated tablet I could find and I found this powerful myth called "The Fall of The City of Eridu"... In the story it talks about Ea Enki, The Eldest son of God, lord of Magick Mischief and Craftsmanship, associated to the "Absu"/"Abyss"... He was beloved and considered the wisest of all the Anunnaki but after saving Humanity it seems as though Enlil turned on him... IN the myth of The Story of The Fall of Eridu it says that Ea Enki's Cult Center of Eridu was brought low... It said it was as if Enlil and the other Anunnaki turned on him and he fled the city and lived outside the city as if it was an alien city and cried and felt broken... IT was so powerful a moment of reading. In the myth "Enki and The World Order" ENki is being very prideful and stating proudly how he is the one who makes things happen and creates abundance in several lines of self glorification... Later in the Fall of Eridu, he's brought low, it felt like finding the moment Lucifer fell from Grace in a way... I relate Lucifer to Enki for other reasons as well... Enki was depicted as a "Goat/Serpent"/"Capricorn" in the oldest of the symbolism... He was also associated to Magic and even veneration for the Feminine forces such as the Goddesses he works with and shows favor towards... Enlil was described in more tyrannical terms but also much like the biblical vengeful God... He's considered the "King of The Anunnaki on Earth" until Ea Enki's son Marduk is given the title for defeating the mythological Goddess Dragon, Tiamat... Enlil's archteype becomes just like the archetype for the Biblical God. Many stories and events of Sumerian Mythology being related directly to Ea Enki though, such as confounding the language at Babylon and also warning Noah of The Flood and even Creating Humanity... Also Ea Enki's emissary was a figure named "Adapa The Sage" whos main mission was to bring forbidden knowledge to humanity to create the first civilizations in a way... IN any case it's as if those stories got condensed down into what later became the Old Testament with everything being attributed to "God" and everything bad being attributed to "The Devil".... Also, I kinda would relate ENlil to the Cult of Saturn in a strange way but Ea Enki is like the Devil if the Devil was The Good Guy...
@BeatMage420
@BeatMage420 Жыл бұрын
Oh, I also need to amend any time I talk about Sumerian mythology that I don't equate it directly with Zacharia Sitchins interpretation... I think he put a modern sci-fi kind of spin on it that really messes up peoples first impressions, but it's a beautiful mythology that I think possibly creates the foundation for many many later myths...

What do you think of the JoS views on Satan/Lucifer? They also relate Satan to Enki
@BeatMage420
@BeatMage420 Жыл бұрын
@@shadowdragon3521 I could see how Satan could be equated to Enki but it's more symbolically because he's the adversary to "The Most High God" by being a challenge to "The Throne Far Towards The North", personally though I have my own view of Satan as a distinctly different entity that's much more malicious in nature. I sort of relate Satan to "Set" of Egyptian Mythology, The God of Chaos who reigns in place of Osiris after dismembering him and while he rules as God, Chaos, War and Suffering thrive. I practice with a lot of shamanism and witchcraft and I view it almost as the same relationship as the Sumerian Mythology with Enki and Enlil as the Egyptian Mythology of Osiris and Set... Enki is like Osiris... He's the Lord of The Underworld, but he's a Benevolent Figure... He's the most loved God of all the People and that creates the Jealousy that leads to Set dimsembering him and scattering his parts across the known world... IT's through the act of the Divine Goddess Isis that Osiris is reborn as Horus... The Birth of Horus signifies a changing of the cycles of time like the Yuga Cycles... Satan or Set rules over the "Kali Yuga" or "Dark Age" as God Himself, creating an inversion of sorts where Satan actually rules from the Throne of God as a "Powerful Force in a High Place" much the way that the establishment Church and Religious organizations have immense power and rule with an iron fist while poverty and ignorance run rampant... I view the initial mythology as evolving into what it became and the relationship between Enki and Enlil becoming the foundation for the myths of Osiris and Set or even the feud between Zeus and Poseidon... Eventually it manifests as the battle between "God" and "The Devil" with The Devil being related to everything that Enki was initially related to... For giving forbidden wisdom.. For working with females and giving them high status, veneration and respect. Enki is related to Magic which is "Witchcraft" which the Church Demonizes... Enki viewed humanity as the children of the Anunnaki and wanted to foster them up to "Become as Gods Themselves", which is why he found them important enough to spare them by warning Ziasudra/Utnapishtim/Noah. I think that entire mythology was lost creating a major misunderstanding... Enlil is like Satan... He was Jealous and Vengeful... He raped his cohort and hid from her in the Sumerian Underworld in disguise and then further tried to manipulate and lie to her... Enlil brought about the genocide of humanity and Enlil was among the Anunnaki who turned on their own cities and brought them to ruin.. IT's as if they were a family of supernatural beings like Djinn that began interaction with humanity thus sparking a major evolution of our consciousnous and way of life in the form of civilization and knowledge... Our modern concept of the biblical narrative is that there must be a "Satan" that's pure evil, but I think Satan has become it's own archetype that represents everything toxic about humanity such as being the culmination of the Seven Deadly Sins... A way of destroying humanity through corrupting them and viewing them as puppets and slaves... I personally love Ea Enki and think he's just very misunderstood... He's like "The Allfather" but has been the victim of the equivelent of millenia of propaganda with all of the things that were once considered positive attributes being the embodiment of what is called "Evil" by the church, such as "Magick"... Ea Enki would still be considered a "Fallen Angel" as he was one of the beings that descended upon the middle east bringing literal divine forbidden knowledge that started civilization that eventually went to war on itself and fell into ignorance and misunderstanding, but without that fall and gift of civilization humanity would not have had many wonderful things that have helped us to develop along our own paths towards becoming "Godlike" as the Anunnaki are... The gifts of Art, Music, Writing, Architecture, Agriculture, Metal Working, Herb and Root Cutting, Astronomy, Astrology and all of it was brought to humanity by the God Ea Enki who took it on as a mission to lift humanity out of the wilds and put them in homes and provide them with food.... His Emissary, Adapa The Sage fished daily to provide the townspeople with food which he carefull prepared with "Clean Hands' every single day... Adapa became the first known Exorcist in known history who cured people of sickness which is said was brought on humanity by his refusal of Immortality from Anu at the behest of Enki... Upon refusing Immortality, Adapa returns to the Earth and becomes the most legendary person in the known world and his name itself becomes an epitaph for "Wise" and Kings for hundreds of years afterwards call on his name in their exorcism rituals... So I view Ea Enki as a Hero of the Story, a tragic fallen outsider, certainly with his own degree of darkness but with good intentions... I would view Satan as the enemy of humanity on the deepest level and the embodiment of Greed and Lust...

Satan to me isn't a good or a bad guy, he's a character that breaks down the strict binary between the two, and as such represents evil, as the underlying tumult of material reality, the force that challenges and changes, and transforms, not towards a single ideal, but rather creating the ideals themselves in its process of transformation. I take a lot after William Blake, whom I'd love for you to have mentioned, albeit time was short 😔 Also Dionysus in Nietzsche and the Unique in Stirner are comparable concepts. A creative nothing that we all are in our own unique ways. That perspective I think is missing from both CoS and TST. Either way, awesome video!

I really liked this presentation. Not only did it address Satanism in a scholarly forum and manner it presented fact based evidence contrary to himsterical *my word instead of hysterical which men used my anatomy to abrogate female dignity, equality, christian ideologies. As someone who at 16yo (now 67yo) I wondered why adults needed a paternal figure to explain the unknown, this information let alone any esoteric information was available. In my search I labeled religious dogma as the "great swap". Few original ideas, lots of swapping of genders, purposes of "deities". As a STEM gal, how energy and how to do positive things in the world with forces that existed before our planets is mind boggling and makes me tingle with all I don't know. Thank you both for making this a very informative and enjoyable experience.

One interesting twist that could be used with any religious usage of Lucifer would be to incorporate the idea of Noctifer. The Romans called the "morning star", (the planet Venus when seen in the morning), Lucifer. Apparently, the planet Venus, when seen in the evening, could be called Noctifer in Latin - "The Night-Bringer". Having a Light-Bringer/Night-Bringer dichotomy could perhaps add some interesting theological possibilities to a religious tradition. I think it would be especially interesting since both of these, apparently opposite, entities are actually the same entity. It seems like there has to be some sort of deep spiritual truth there somewhere....
@morpheanopera
@morpheanopera 5 ай бұрын
That is an interesting twist on the latin. The Roman's real name for the Evening star was Vesper, which I think simply means evening. Lucifer's original greek counterpart was Phosphorus (also "Light-bringer") and Vesper's was Hesperos, which I don't know the meaning of.

From a tantric perspective, antinomianism introduces a form of experience that is polarized in a manner that opposes the crystallized polarity of deeply ingrained mental constructs (Sanskrit, vikalpa), thus potentially contributing to direct, non-conceptual (nirvikalpa) insight or gnostic immersion in a primordial monad that creates, preserves, and destroys countless universes within itself by contracting a portion of its unlimited energy (without ever dividing its core essence). So, in my opinion, honoring Satan or Lucifer has the potential to be especially powerful for individuals enmeshed in a Christian/Abrahamic cultural context - though the Christ/Satan duality is culturally specific and just as empty as other dualities appearing within the monad (e.g. hot/cold, light/dark, male/female, self/other, pleasure/suffering, etc.

It's an interesting area of scholarly study, especially in a sociological sense. The desperation of adherents to tie their thinking to some ancient wisdom/tradition, and engender a greater potency, makes for an interesting correlation to the study of pop culture areas like Star Wars. It can't escape its modernist origins but takes on a world of its own in the mind of the 'believer,' and thus creation of new literature.

Great interview, thank you so much. I am curious - are there similar groups out of other religions, such as Islam (Shaitan/Iblis), Zoroastrianism (Angra Mainyu/Ahriman), or Hinduism (the Asuras)? Or have Satanists, as we know them in the West, ever made used of these "forms" of Satan in other religions?

Very interesting, as always! Thanks, Dr. Puca and Dr. Faxneld! I have a question and a further thought. First, the question: I had never heard before about women who wanted to escape the pains of childbirth resorting to the Devil at the risk of their firstborn sons becoming werewolves. Is there a particular source for that, or a scholarly commentator who discusses it in published form anywhere? I'd love to add it to my bibliography! ;) Now, the further thought: remember, "Lucifer" is not just a term that arises in Christian discourse (and in several medieval Latin hymns, Jesus is called "Lucifer" because he is thought to bring the light!), but instead one that is attached to a deity in ancient Greek and Roman practice, namely the deity/spirit of the Morning Star (i.e. Venus), who is called Lucifer in Latin and Phosphoros in Greek. So, in that strict sense, that usage has nothing to do with Christianity's strange geometric proof that equates Satan and various other figures from Hebrew myth with others from various sources into a unitary entity.

Growing up there was a family of theistic satanists in my neighborhood. The guy finally built this monstrosity of a side building onto his house. He was going to start an organized church there (they already had a group of people meeting up there, at all hours of the night- lots of cars in the driveway packed up.) But then he found out the area was not zoned for any kind of church. Then they were starting a private school, and because I was home schooled, they relentlessly gave brochures to my mother. They were just as pushy as many of the Bible-thumpy "Christians" in the area. And they had the same Pat Buchanan signs on their front lawn.

He was constantly driving past our house really slow, his head all out the window of his car. A couple of their parishioners came by the house very late while my parents were gone a couple of times. Very intelligent discussion, this guy is clearly very knowledgeable.. But unfortunately & surprisingly he misses out some crucial & major players in the growth of the field.. including Masonic aspects with Albert Pike, the influences of the Enlightenment & the French Revolution’s cult of reasons bacchian feasts, the mid 19th Century French literally developments as Lucifer the under hero, the growth of the Templar Bafomet myth & mythology, the major input of the great beast Aleistar Crowley & his work with zero mention of the OTOs significant influence on 20thCent occultism, LaVey’s later the Satanic Witch publication, the 1970s rise of Chaos Magick to name a few is likewise completely neglected.. So where as this gentleman is clearly very well researched & intelligent he does rather oddly completely miss many key aspects & elements at the same time.. Nor does the gentlemen raise the very prominent & obvious topic of the inherent fundamental contradiction of the more recent phenomenon of atheistic Satanism.. as any truly atheistic Satanism would have no reference at all to any gods, demons, spirits or theistic figures & would more resemble something akin to communism which is clearly not the case with the many new groups sprouting such idiocy.

As a non-LaVeyan Satanist who has never really identified with the Left Hand Path, it's a relief to hear it even further confirmed that the term 'Satanism' itself existed well before LaVey's usage, and how the LHP has no necessary foundational link to Satanism. @@lyartbane2115 My Satanism is mostly based on Paradise Lost and the Romantic Satanist literary canon for sure, and the nonconformity and rebellion of all that, though I also enjoy demonology. I'm nontheistic, but I guess the ritual trappings of demon worship could be seen more like zoolatry, as opposed to authority-based. I don't find the LHP/RHP dichotomy very important to me, to be honest. I think it can be limiting. I'm not averse to feeling a sense of union with nature as something greater than myself, but I also refuse to submit myself to any god or authority. I guess for me the highest spiritual ideal would be a kind of anarchic symbiosis. And I think that by undermining authority and supporting individuality, a person serves others and serves the world. I hope that clarifies

I'm not into LHP stuff, it's not my thing, but I don't hate on anyone that is into such things. Do you! Anyway, in regards to the subject matter... I take most of what I learn about certain things and apply it to my life from an allegorical stance, it seems to make more sense that way, meaning certain things like Lucifer, Christ, etc, might be seen as light bringers or states of consciousness one might access through changing ones life in some way, usually a positive one...think Christ consciousness. One doesn't have to be religious in anyway to benefit from being like Christ/Lucifer or any of the light bringers from the past which are written about in stories, myths, legends, religious, spiritual texts, etc. I have seen adults learn lessons from Disney movies, so if an adults can benefit from a message in a Disney movie by enjoying a certain character seen in the movie and learning from something they did, think "always let your conscience be your guide" then it's not to far out there to think that someone might benefit from figures written about in older texts. Thank you for all that you do! History, anthropology, philosophy, and spirituality are very interesting, thanks for shining some light on those subject matters!

Our call for "Liberty, equality, and fraternity." brought whole legions to our ranks from all four corners of the world through our unconscious agents, and these legions carried our banners with ecstasy. In the meantime, these words were eating, like so many worms, into the well-being of the Christians and were destroying their peace, steadfastness and unity, thus ruining the foundations of the new States. But, as we shall see later on, this action brought about our triumph. It gave us the possibility, among other things, of playing the ace of trumps - namely, the abolition of privileges; in other words, the existence of the Gentile aristocracy, which was the only protection nations and countries had against ourselves. On the ruins of natural and hereditary aristocracy, we built an elite of our own on a plutocratic basis. We established this new aristocracy on wealth, which we had control, and on science promoted by our scholars. Our triumph was rendered more accessible by the fact that we, through our connections with people who were indispensable to us, always worked upon the most susceptible part of the human mind, namely, by playing on our victims' weakness for profits, on their greed, on their insatiability, and on the material requirements of man; for each one of the said weaknesses, taken by itself, is capable of destroying initiative, thus handing over the will- power of the people to the mercy of those who would deprive them of all their power of initiative. Exert of unknown author December 1919 Luciferian manifesto - masquerading as the ''protocols of zion.'' In its purest form, Luciferianism is the abject opposite of ALL Christian values. Of all the belief systems of ''Satanists, alternative, mainstream religions"', it would have the smallest number of faithful adherents - its goals are the enslavement and eventual eradication of humanity. One hundred and one years after the above publication, Its ranks can claim in 2022 to be proceeding as planned towards its goal. not sure how to sugarcoat it .

If the entity Satan is in fact a purely Christian construct, and not related to or adjacent to paganism, wouldn't that mean then that a very young religion (Christianity / Judaism) birthed this entity? And then isn't Satan an egregore, created by the adherents of the Abrahamic faiths? It seems far more likely to me that this entity has many masks throughout time, is not an egregore, and one of its masks is "Satan", and this is the primary vehicle or mask of the adversary for the Abrahamic faiths (for Islam as well, in the form of Iblis). I feel that if this entity (or any entity for that matter) is not an egregore, than it is absolutely pagan as it / they have existed well before newer religions and probably well before human evolution.

Satan means adversary/obstacle/accuser. So satan isn’t a name of an entity. Anybody or anything can be called satan that stands in the way, in that case standing against righteousness. So when Jesus was talking to satan he was talking to his “lower self” not a demonic entity or fallen angel as the church wants you to think.

Good overview and nice to hear of some of the minor historical figures. Thought be some mention of Hellfire Club. Whether Christian or reinterpreted it's always retaining some aspect of the mythology - even in counter-myth. Also still believe contemporary practitioners should drop the Lucifer/Luciferian term, regardless of Milton, given this is a clear Biblical misinterpretation. It's exactly like naming your practice Venusian Witchcraft.

Not true, Satan turns up in new testament to tempt Christ, an entire conversation is documented between them. Jesus repeatedly called Satan the "Prince of THIS world", He is a real Spirit being who is as doomed as he is evil... choose your side wisely, Satan has no real power beyond this pathetic world, God operates this world like a big Spirtual test for our souls, and those that chose unwisely to follow the scumbag who pretends to be powerful and oh so "wise" will end up in the trash heap... 🗑 re-read the New Testament and listen to Jesus closely, he is the only way, the truth and the light of the world 🙏... and don't fall into organised religion (that is another trap of Satan's), Jesus didn't come to set up religion, Jesus came to tell us to develop a PERSONAL relationship with our Creator through our example and Saviour Jesus Christ ❤️ 💙 🙌 🙏

And yes Angela I agree with you on your question about satanic pagans. You said , are satanist really pagans ? And from an Abrahamic point of view I'd have to say not really , but they do exist and it's ok . But I say even though there is alot of paganism in the church , real pagans don't practice any of the 3 Abrahamic religions. Real witches will tell you they don't believe in the devil or Jesus or any of those concepts. Them as well as myself tap into something older and doesn't have all the extra names and religious packaging for political control . Pagans , witches , shamans , medicine men , etc deal with the spiritual order of nature that predates the advent of organized religion. To me satanism is more Christian that Jewish , even though the Bible started with the Jews. To the Jews it was more of a cautionary tale of the opposition to God's law , and how we all must struggle with this in ourselves. The satanist see it as something totally different. It appears to have more meaning in a social construct as far as I'm concerned , but nevertheless it is based on Christianity or nowadays, anti Christianity . Like the protestant reform it had it's roots in one place , and lives somewhere else now. I guess we can call it extreme reform hahahaha. But yeah i have nothing against them. There are some that don't practice magick at all , and that's ok , the laws give it a format and framework that assures you will never find one ringing your doorbell trying to convert you . That's one of many things I like about them , and they take responsibility for there own actions .

I'd like to point out that many Theistic Satanists don't even believe in the Abrahamic god, let alone practice the Abrahamic religions. Many sects are actually polytheistic, and/or even believe that the Abrahamic devil is a corruption of the real deity (such as with Temple of Set). So while not all of them are pagans, some of them actually are. You can't really make these broad generalizations given how many unique sects exist.

While Satanism seems (anti-)christian on the surface, most forms rely on certain aspects of pagan mythology/religion on a practical level. The anti-christian symbolism is very present in Black Metal for example, but I think the number of Satanists founding their religion on mere christian mythology is vanishingly small compared to the rest.
