What is Segment Knotting?

A number of people have messaged me with questions about this and I'm only now just getting around to filming it! Hopefully this helps you guys figure out the ins and outs of segment knotting!

Literally so helpful!! I have been making friendship bracelets for 9 years and I am just now understanding what segment knotting is. I realized that I have only done segment knotting for the 9 years I have been making friendship bracelets. I am advanced in bracelets but I get nervous to try complicated patterns like the starburst for example. Thank you so much! Keep creating!

Thanks so much for this! I had started a normal pattern going row by row, even though I could see that there were chevron elements in the pattern, and after watching this video, studying the pattern, and thinking REALLY HARD 😆 I was able to switch to making it using segment knotting... the difference in speed is like night and day!

No wonder looking at patterns confuses me!! I have been segment knotting since I started making bracelets and didn't even realize it 🤪 Thank you Megan for this video!! Once again you amaze me!! I quite simply LOVE your personality and videos!! Now if I can only learn how to read a pattern 🤔 hahaha haha I have literally tried for much longer than I care to admit. 🤣🤣

Patterns are designed to be read in horizontal rows! It’s very confusing and I got very frustrated when I first started with them. I had to stop segment knotting for a bit and work horizontally a few times to really figure it out in my own head just how it converted to segment knotting. When I first started reading patterns I would work strictly in one direction so I eliminated as much room for mistake as possible - for me that was always left to right. Maybe working that way might help you figure it out! Best of luck! 🤗

Wow. Nodding to wadda message you pack. I’ve been wondering why I’ve been shifting all nots into knots in a textual sense. Thanks again. I’ll continue to shift the last seven years into more organized materialization packets of more sense to be made.

I arrived to your video because somebody wrote "segment knotting method" in a group and I was interested. I knot since I'm 10 years old and I hoped for learning a new method. But now I realized this is what I always do. I was curious what is the other way, the "not-segment-knotting", and this is the first time I see that method. I can't imagine anyone would knot like that. For me it looks slower and more difficult to follow.

Many people have started with segmented knotting and didn’t know there was a name for it (myself included). The other method, I found to be more useful when I started learning how to read larger patterns. Once I got a grasp on that I was back to segment knotting because it’s definitely slower! Haha!

Reagan Russ if you look at any of my normal pattern tutorials they are segment knotted. I can certainly look at segment knotting a more complex bracelet for a normal tutorial though!

I recommend scripting your video ideas and memorizing or reading the script while you film. You'll be able to convey information quicker and easier, without getting lost on a specific subject. I'd also recommend talking head shots, basically filming your face while you convey the information and than cutting/editing to the bracelet you're going to work on. Viewers respond much better to a KZfaqr who shows their face :) Good luck!

Astral'o Pithecus thanks for the input! This is an older video and I’ve changed the way I do audio now. Script is never something I will do but I do voiceover for most of my videos now and have a more direct approach to my explanations. 🙂

Can bracelet pattern 22517 be segment knotted, I can't figure out if can to make it easier as there are so many forward backward and backward forward knots?

I think there is nothing normal about row by row knotting :-D I learned making bracelets in segment style and never tried row by row (except for 1-2-1-2-patterns), because it's such in pain. It just takes forever oO

Peter Kahl I learnt segment style too and still think row by row is weird! 😂
