Really rare to find such a clear explanation about a semi-obscure subject like this, saved me at least half if not a whole hour of trying to figure this out by myself

There are SIP books with hundreds of pages like "SIP: Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol, Fourth Edition (English Edition)"with about 700 pages. If you can get a phd on a ytube video that is pretty humorous. I'd ask that Mexican university for my money back.

I wish more tutorials were like this. No time wasting, but still friendly and highly informative. But best of all, the video did not start with : "Hey! What's up guys!".

Wow! This video should be a template for anyone who wants to do KZfaq tutorials. The last video I saw was some dude fumbling over a whiteboard for 10 minutes, and I was none the wiser at the end of it.

This is a great video, as many people have already said, but one thing I don't understand yet is this: SIP is an Application Layer protocol. You are saying that SIP helps computers find each other. But as far as I know, that is done by means of IP adresses, which are found in the Network Layer and not in the Application Layer. By the time you get to unpacking the SIP packet, you should already be on the right computer. Right? Or what am I misunderstanding?

00:06 SIP is a protocol to initiate IP communication sessions. 00:45 Dave and Nathan communicate via signals and sound waves 01:24 IP packets are crucial in IP communications 02:00 Media packets are encoded and decoded to transmit audio and possibly video over an IP network. 02:42 Locating other users and agreeing on codecs is essential for real-time conversation. 03:22 SIP is a rulebook that describes how to locate the other party and manage the call. 03:59 SIP phones send and receive packets to communicate over IP networks. 04:37 Understanding the essence of SIP is easy, but implementing real-life solutions and supporting real IP communications networks is complex.00:06 SIP is a protocol to initiate IP communication sessions. 04:37 Understanding the essence of SIP is easy, but implementing real-life solutions and supporting real IP communications networks is complex.
