You probably already know by now but just in case you don’t… At all the Sydney beaches with rocky headlands at each end, it’s those ends that are the most dangerous for the inexperienced. You noticed that the “floor” dipped down as you waded out well that dip has been dug by a rip current. These typically form where the in-rushing water from the surf finds its way back out to sea, taking everything with it (water, sand and swimmers) and can almost always be found at the rocky ends of a beach as well as at intervals along the beach. The safe places to surf have been indicated for you by the lifeguards/surf lifesaver volunteers placing two separated red+yellow flags in the sand, with the safe part being between the flags and only between the flags. In general, beware of the deeper-looking, calmer-looking stretches of water where the waves are not actively breaking as that is a surefire sign of a rip current, either a lateral rip taking you along the beach or what I like to call a New Zealand Express, taking you straight out to sea towards New Zealand. The lateral rips usually join together and then form a New Zealand Express with double the strength.

Lived there for a year about 20 years ago. My heart kind of skipped a beat as you were going down the hill on the bus. Did that commute countless times. Use to walk out of the house in bare feet and go for a surf every morning. I miss 2035.

Since they ran the sewerage pipes further from shore the big difference is that you're not dodging cigar fish in the breakers. A great improvement.

I grew up on Maroubra beach. Its my second fave beach. I was always drawn to Coogee over Maroubra.

Good on you for trying the less touristy beaches, you should visit Cronulla, it's easy to get to by train from the city and there's lots of great food and bars.

Wait till you see what Queensland has for you, come up and swim in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Pure paradise. I recommend August, it’s hot enough, but not melting. But please, no matter what, swim between the flags, don’t be deceived by nice looking water, or some locals who swim like fish because it’s their backyard, our beaches can be very dangerous. Ironicly, the beaches in the top three positions on this years best list are in Tasmania, South Australia and at number one, Squeaky Beach in Victoria.

If you can, try some beaches out of Sydney. Central Coast is 1hr north of Sydney, and beaches are more natural. Ocean Beach, Bouddhi Bouddhi National Park , Bateau Bay many to choose from.

Nice video, this is my beach, if you walked further to the southern end of the beach near the car park it’s the start of the beautiful coastalwalk that takes you to Malabar Headland, fairly soon it’s the start of whale migration & this area is where you’ll see lots of whales & dolphins. If you do get caught in a rip dont panic and don't swim against it. Swim out of it diagonally. Once out then swim back to shore. If the beach is patrolled by lifesavers if you need help for what ever reason you put an arm up to be rescued. The kids you saw being teached are called nippers due to their young age and are in a life saving club.

As a teen , my “westie” classmates always warned that Maroubra was the most dangerous beach to swim, with rips, undertows and the “bra boys”! 😂
