Yes, in the Silmarillion, the Valar even argue about it. Yavanna (who loves the forests) learns about the Ents, and says "Then let those who would take an axe to the trees, beware!" Aule (who created the dwarves) basically shrugs and says, "Yet they shall have a great need of wood." Tolkien wasn't totally naive about cutting down trees, he just hated wanton destruction.

@@ravithejon2466 That's more of a flaw with Tolkien's writing than anything else. It's not clear what they use. Maybe they do burn coal, but he never mentions it. Coal is made from plants. It's found under plains, deserts, even swamps, but not under mountains.

From the show, it seems mithril is unknown to elves at the start of the show. That doesn't mean the elves don't have another kind of metal that is super strong - probably through enchantments. Indeed, from the books, I'd have assumed they did. However, as far as I know, Tolkien often didn't go into detail how widespread elven magic was in their society, or how it worked. In my opinion, that is one of the strengths of LOTR - Tolkien resisted the urge to explain and so kept magic mysterious.

It’s got lower production value than old low budget swashbuckling adventure movies that Shad has reviewed. The fact that it’s a multimillion dollar project and that most of that money is going to people’s salaries makes it pretty obvious to me that it was intended to be a cover for straight up criminal embezzling.

Adjusted for inflation the LOTR cost almost as much as rings of power season 1 which has props that can be used over multiple seasons so its probably cheaper overall. Don't believe every meme you see bud.

Hardly any recorded instances of hair or beard grabbing during combat at all. In fact, even the common myth that Romans supposedly shaved and kept their hair short so enemies would not be able to grab it in battle is just that: a myth. Medieval armour designs, while functional, also placed great emphasis on aesthetics if the wearer could afford it.

Personally, I think this would actually fit dwarven culture and fighting style far better. They are clearly established to favor fighting in tightly packed blocks, which makes sense for both their strong culture of martial brotherhood, and for their physicality. In that sort of formation, visibility is not very important, so a face covering wouldn't be that much of a hindrance. Peter Jackson clearly thought about this when he made The Hobbit, as you see the regular dwarven soldiers wearing full face helmets. Officers have their faces exposed, but that's hardly unbelievable, given that many cultures had officers wearing more open helmets or sometimes none at all, like in the case of high ranking Roman officers. After all, a good officer is supposed to be an inspiration to his men, and that's far easier to do when you can see his face

An explanation could be, its not a scale mail breast plate, but rather a hardened dragon leather breastplate. (no idea what it might be in story, but that universe has dragons... for example smaug in "the hobbit")

Scale armor = because Numenor is an island, and ...water, fish and scales and stuff. Elvish sword = at 17:48 , you can see the cross guard looks like a tiny bow, and the handle and blade look like a big arrow ...because elves and bows and stuff.

Aside from Gimli, dwarves going to war in The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the appendices thereof (which allegedly this series is based on) used pick axes more than regular axes. Also, lots of swords and the occasional bow. And it does make a lot of sense for dwarves to cut down trees, since wood is a natural resource that can be crafted into things and the scraps of it are fuel for fire. I've thought of this connection on my own, but never ascribed it to Middle Earth specifically before.

All of the three races would have needed to cut down trees, including the elves (elves would have likely have sought out dead trees). But almost all metal-working would have required huge amounts of wood for fuel. I guess the dwarves might conceivably burned coal, although I don't think Tolkien ever referenced it.

@@Jagonath I've put some thought into this recently on the tangent of another conversation. There is no reason to assume that coal or gas exist, unless Alauvitar specifically created it for them because the world is too young to have formed it naturally.

@@valandil7454 yes, but they evolved a lot, and if you out a big ass guard at your sword maybe make it usefully and not worse than no guard at all, it probably can hinder certain manovers, can be dangerous for the user, and has no positive effects at all, while when you flip the guard around it works perfectly fine (has less of the drawbacks, and actually does the job it should do)

@@shinobi-no-bueno the guard on that would still be usable for blocking or partying. Although in viking defense they preferred the bearded ax which was cheaper to make, used less material, and was probably why they put so little hand guard on them. Plus swords were a lot harder to make.

The crude design also fit the orcs thematically, as well as fit lore-wise, as the orc army was all about quantity over quality.

It's not like beard hair couldn't be bundled up into a normal chin guard. Also those ceremonial masks clearly aren't made for battle but for intimidation. The dwarves hadn't been at war with anything except politics in generations.

Possibly. But even then, carrying guns on the back would be more of a thing from infantry wars rather than the Old West. Functionally carrying a gun on one's back is only preferable when one needs immediate access to it, or when there is no other place to store larger weapons, such as on a wagon or horse.

To be fair, this is before she is given charge of her ring. Even after they got their own rings Elrond and Gandalf still ran around using swords and armour to fight. I think people have been trying too hard to apply DnD archetypes to Tolkien's work when it just doesn't fit. Magic in Middle-Earth is very rarely used as a direct weapon and instead, much more about influencing others or the odd "conjuring trick". Even the gods fought their enemies armed and armoured rather than throwing fireballs at each other. In that context I don't see a problem with giving Galadriel, who is objectively less powerful than when we see her in the Lord of the Rings, arms and armour.

@@bjiornbjiorn she was summoning storms in the first age. Elves actually get less powerful the longer they are in middle earth. Galadriel would be more powerful in this time than in LotR. And yes it is like shooting fireballs at each other. Saruman does literally that, Gandalf summons light and force fields, Elrond controls rivers, and Galadriel has the power of storms.

I think all fantasies indicate Dwarves being stronger then Humans with various additional benefits. Dragon Age series 10% resistance to magical damage and unable to actually use magic. R. A. Salvatore's works stronger, longer lived then humans, and a connection to a smithing deity that can inspire them to create a masterwork armor or weapon or possibly other smithed item. Then in the Granddaddy of fantasy Tolkien's actual works also stronger and longer lived then humans. Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle Dwarves are longer lived and brawnier then average humans.

There's gatehouses, functional arrow slits, cheval de frise, those wooden barricades with shooting holes that I can't remember the name of, etc. Redmane Castle even has a siege tower, catapults, and ballistae overlooking the bridge to it.

It’s interesting learning how a fabricated prop translates onto camera. Like, in real life it might look a bit odd, but through the lense it looks totally legit. Ive got a couple of friends who worked in prop/set building in the film industry, and it looks so creative and interesting.

I heard that for dog fights, they just let the dogs have a play fight, a rumble, and they play it in slow-motion and it looks like they try to kill eachother. Also: if you spot a nice piece of scenery somewhere,or a colorful sunset, take a picture and prepare to be disappointed: it looks so small on camera. So yeah, I totally get that 'fake' stuff can look super convincing on camera

It is not about the facemask. It is about the "BEARD-Mask" that hinders the head movement. Reading stuff still leaves much room for imagination... That is good for a book, less so for a Movie or TV series!

It's all about distinguishing features, for the Mandalorian that feature is his helm, yet for most actors it is their faces. I would like to see more helmets but I'm glad reviews don't note it for shows and movies anymore since this is an unfortunate granted for almost all media.

I like the theory floating around on the interwebs that Dwarf beards help act as a dust filter from all the time they spend mining and forging, so they don't all get blacklung.

It did look cool as a concept. The only downside was that you could tell it was some kind of 'fake' leather type or material thing, because it didn't behave the same way or hang in the same way as scales. Eg. you could see the individual scales bending and things, and they had clearly dyed or painted it which made it look much flatter in colour than scales. It spoiled the illusion somewhat. Which was more a problem with budgeting or probably not wanting it to be too heavy for the actors or something.

@@slicerneons3300 The only plausible reason Numenorean sailors (Sea Guard) trainees would wear armor would be to allow them to get on with the extra weight and hindrance of the armor from the start. But I somehow missed the division between "normal" sailors without armor and marines with armor.

It is a military vessel by the look of the crew wearing armor (though rather unusual since all of their ships look the same) so yes, it is within reason for them to wear armor. The ones Isildur was in didn't wear them so that's likely a trading vessel of some sort.

That's not entirely true, tolkien especially mentioned orcs being smart with mechanisms of all sorts especially military in Hobbit and the bad guys have this overall theme of modernisation and industrialism to it because of Tolkien experience with ww2.

My guess is that the real issue is a lack of cohesive purpose in the creative team. Jackson inspired and attracted talent, who were happy to work with him and was able to assemble weta, one of the best in the biz. But alienating and sending mixed messages can cause talent to flee. A thousand dollars would not get me a better pencil than 10 dollars. Products have a price point. Exceed it and you waste money. Exceed it too much and product quality deteriorates.

@@jasonbernard5468 exactly. We are 4 episodes in and we have 4 different storylines and we don't know the plot of even one storyline even halfway through the season. I've never seen a show do that before. We have the harfoot storyline and we don't know what their purpose on the story is. We have elrond with the dwarfs that build a tower that we don't know what it is for and why they're doing it. Galadriels story ,the most annoying character, is just luck. She swam an ocean then she happened to find a raft in the Middle of nowhere then a ship happened to pass by, then the ship happened to go to numenor where she happened to find information etc. Then we have the back elf and Arda and we have no idea what their story is. This story is a mess. What's the hook for me to keep watching? 4 plotlines and I have no idea how a normie who has never heard of LOTR before is supposed to invest in this
