Figuring out what the best ATV to buy can be an exciting but daunting process. There are some important questions to ask yourself however, that will make the process easier. After all, with every Polaris owner telling you if you want Power you need a Polaris, and every Yamaha Owner telling you Yamaha's are the best kept secret around, it can be tough to figure out what the best type of ATV is for you to purchase.

kzfaq.info...
The first thing I recommend you do before running into the dealership to pick out a new ATV is ask yourself these questions:
- What do I plan to use it for?
- Where will I be riding it? (more on tracks, in the mountains, in Alaska?)
- Is this new ATV purchase for work, pleasure, or both?
- Do I care more about speed or more about maneuverability?
- What type of riding do I enjoy the most? (Do I want to trail ride, mud bog, rock crawl, etc)
- How do I like to ride? (Do I like to ride fast on on the machine, or relaxed and laid back)
- Do I want 4WD?
- How invested am I? (Is this a regular hobby or something I do from time to time)
Utility ATVS
Alright, lets start by figuring out what type of ATV you want to buy. There are three main categories to consider, the Utility ATV, the Sport Quad, and the Utility-Sport ATV. The utility ATV is going to be the most versatile an well rounded ATV. What that means is you can easily use it for work, then take it out on the trails and have a good time.
If you plan to use this on your property, or even think you will want to plow your driveway with it in the winter then a utility ATV is what you want to consider purchasing. Make no mistake about it however, gone are the days where a utility ATV is more just for work. These machines have come a long way and make amazing ATVs for trail riding. The utility style ATV is also something you will want to consider if you want a nice big machine that you can ride comfortably on. If things like comfort, bells and whistles, and storage are important to you, then you will probably want to start your ATV buying journey focused on the utility ATV.
The Sport Quad
Now if things like comfort and a laid back approach have less meaning to you, a sport quad may be more down your alley. The Sport quad machines are going to offer speed and maneuverability better than any of the other categories. A much smaller engine will get you a much faster ATV. So if you are looking to race your ATV, or just want something that you can hit the throttle and get
There are a few other considerations to remember when looking towards purchasing a sport quad, however. First off, there are few to no bells and whistles. This is great in the sense that it means less to break. However, things like 4WD, a liquid cooled engine, and an automatic transmission are all things you may be giving up. So just make sure you are OK sacrificing those things before making any hasty decisions.
The Utility-Sport ATV
Now if you want some of the benefits of a utility ATV and some of the speed of a sport quad, consider buying a utility-sport ATV. I consider the utility-sport ATV the best of both worlds but the greatest of neither (Clear as mud right?). In other words, you get a lot of the benefits of a utility machine such as the 4WD, more comfort, power steering, and automatic transmission just to name a few. You also get a lot of the speed and maneuverability found in sport quads.
Now I say it is not the best of either because you do not get the same level of size and comfort from a sport-utility machine that you do from a big bore, well rounded utility machine. Nor will you find yourself with the same lightweight rugged ATV that you can get with a straight sport quad. If you are looking to get some comfort, bells and whistles, and speed however, this may be the best ATV to buy.
Once you have the type of ATV figured out, you will want to start thinking about engine size. Below is a very very basic guide to consider and keep in mind. However, it is nothing more than a guide and you should test a few out, find one that you feel the most comfortable (and safe on), and go from there.
50-125cc (kids)
- These sizes are generally only going to be on very small machines, that's because they are meant for children.
300-400cc - Starter machines and smaller adults
500 - 660cc - Good well rounded size
700-850cc - Good for advanced trail riding or farming
1000cc - Mud Bogging, lots of speed, and good for pulling
In the end, make sure you take some time to weight your options. Do some research and test a few out. Don't let a dealer convince you to buy something that you are not absolutely sure about. Also, make sure you leave a comment and let me know what you chose and as always, thanks for watching and I hope to see you on the trail!

It's "explanation" I was a foreigner in brasil for a couple years and I would guess at a lot of words because the patterns between the two languages seemed consistent then every once in a while the words was just slightly different. I believe I was calling the portuguese word "explicação" as "explanação" for a while. Not trying to insult your english. For me personally, I loved my Honda 300 EX years ago. Great to learn on, very versatile. Basically was marketed as a sport utility, but easily converted to full sport. I rode that thing for 9 years, HARD. Never had any major issues. Now that Im older, I wouldnt trade my 2000 Arctic Cat 500 4x4 for anything. Its not going to win many races, but its comfortable, reliable even at 20 years old, plows 2 foot of snow like nothing and havent bogged in a mud hole yet that people on newer quads wouldnt dare try. All comes down to what kind of riding you're looking for like said in the video to get the most enjoyment. But those 2 I listed above were both great.

I bought a brand new yellow 400EX in 2001 and rode it for 15 years. 15 years and not a single break of anything. Only oil changes and tires. If you know how to ride a sport quad there are few places you cant follow the 4x4 guys. There was never a hill they could climb that I also couldn't nail with sheer momentum and climb too. Big mud holes I could always find a way around. I miss the sport quad glory days. I rode a new Sportsman recently and it felt like riding a aircraft carrier. That Scrambler is NOT a sport quad either...its just a stripped down Sportsman. You roll them down a hill its done, totaled. A real sport quad you can save and not roll in the first place by hopping off, or as in the film here they can roll over and keep on going. Theres only 1 sport quad left today...the Raptor.

For me, I have found that I prefer the big single engines over the v-twins. It's a more simple setup, and tends to feel better in the bottom end. Sure, the twins have longer legs, but 99% of the time that is a non-factor. I also really like the sport-utility segment. That being said, you can typically trim the fat off of the utility machines, get better shocks, and have the same thing.
@NavigateOffroad
@NavigateOffroad 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input, Rodney. I agree that a large amount of the time the V-twin is a non factor. Then again, I personally do more trail riding that speeding down routes or more open spaces. So I think riding style plays a role there as well.

I choose the lower power and low displacement kymco models. They're basically #2 for reliability, only under Honda, (they helped develop their engine), they have nice suspension, and they've been selling my model (mxu 150) forever, and (in 2018) was still selling. Supposedly theyre super easy to repair and parts can be found. Super cheap, (my mom got hers for under 2 grand when it was relatively new) and parts are shared between multiple kymco models, (it uses MX'ER and Mongoose parts).

My feet are in bad shape. It saved me a lot of walking that I couldn't have done. It carried me to the north side of the field where the deer like to go. Then one came out and I shot it. Then I tied it to the back of the wheeler and it carried me and my deer out. I like my wheeler. I will never hunt without it now.

Very good video! You are spot on about engine size. Kind of off subject ? My first "new" snowmobile was an Arctic Cat El Tigre 6000 ( 600 cc 2 stroke) and later decided to upgrade to a ZR 8000 ( 800 cc 2 stroke), I will be the first to admit I should have just stuck with my 600! Don't get me wrong, having about 40 more HP is awesome but the extra weight and almost too much power made it a handful in the tight trails that I ride in. I guarantee I could get through those trails faster on my 600 and with a lot less effort than on my 800 cc sleds! Just this last weekend I was riding some trails in Northern Michigan with a couple of buddies( my 2017 Sportsman 850 SP, 2004 Sportsman 700 and a 2000 Honda Recon 250). I tell you what even though 2 of us had some big bad Sportsmans, it was quite challenging to keep up with that little Honda ridden by an experienced rider on tight trails!! :-)

Hell yeah man. I've got a 2005 Raptor 350 which is essentially the same as the warrior. Bought it brand new when I turned 18 and still have it. Great bike! I also have more powerful machines but I will never get rid of my 350. It's still on the original clutch and I ride it all the time even if it's a quick loop around the block. I've had a tusk heavy duty clutch sitting on standby for the last 4 years but haven't put it in because the original one is completely fine still. Now that they don't really make sport quads anymore the only way I'll separate from it is over my dead body. I love that thing.

I am 43 now and about to sell my yfz 450 sport quad and just bought a polaris sportsman. I love to go fast but being comfortable is now more important to me. That being said I am looking into the can am renegade 800x. It's 4x4, automatic, and crazy fast. My so will ride the Polaris. He tried learning on a blaster and the trails we ride are too extreme. He wants automatic

I went big bore utility on my first cuz I know ima use it for lots of trail ride and hunting. My dad got a 450 Yamaha Kodiak thing bogs climbing up hill. I didn’t buy big bore to run all it’s power down the dirt road but it’s a cruise going up hill lightly tapping the throttle and it goes.

I’m 73 and bought a 2019 Polaris Sportsman 850 SP. I absolutely love it. We have tons of trails here in Sanpete County, Utah. I live 6 blocks away from Manti Canyon with trails spanning many towns and Canyons. I love going up the Canyon and on the trails. My bike has the perfect amount of power for me. The suspension system is absolutely perfect for riding. It’s manageable in every way for my husband and I who has the same bike. Good luck. Buy what you feel fits you and the type of riding you want to do.

Don't be too nervous to start on something big. I learned to ride on a Yamaha grizzly 700 when I was 12. If you have the self control to take it slow untill your comfortable on it, start on a medium-big bike.

I ride a trx450r and my friend has a scrambler 850. I like my 450r for its ability to be controlled and the raw power. I like my buddies scramble because it feels like a cadi. Sure its heavier but the plush suspension makes you want to ride all day and it can keep up with my 450r on the trails if you know how to ride it. The scrambler is a very well rounded quad and im considering buying one

the point standing at 15:00 stands true - im 13 now, but, when i was 12, started off on a 107 engine and yes chinese was still fun as hell and worth it, my brother came over (had graduated from marine corps), and was riding a yamaha 400, cant remember the exact name right now, but i was around 5'7 at that age and like 180+ lb, and by that point i was really experience with bumps, drifting and getting out of those sucky situations, and also controlling at high speeds, but he hadnt had that experience entirely, and for him it was difficult to keep up, even though he was about same weight but just 6'2

Honda Recon is the best Atv for utility. It's light, cheap, less parts to break, if you get stuck alot put a winch and your good to go. 4x4 front axles break on the larger models recon is rear wheel drive that never breaks. Or you can get a Honda Rancher 420 2WD but it's heavier so if you get stuck by yourself you might have a hard time getting out of the mud you will definitely need a winch on this Atv.

I have a Artic Cat XC 450 it's the best of all worlds when it comes to 4 wheeling. It's a sport quad but I've put a rack on it and a winch and there both able to plug into the trailer hitch so I'm able to use them when I need them and if I don't want them I don't have to bring them with me because there not on my machine full time.
