We all like to rider different, however, there are certain ATV rules of the trail that all offroad riders should try to follow, and certain mistakes Riders make that they should try and avoid.

kzfaq.info...
There are so many amazing public (and private) trails to enjoy riding with your ATV or Side by Side. By not thinking of other riders, however, can not only be dangerous but also ruin the enjoyment for many people. That is why every so often we discuss some rules of the trail that can be important to remember when out riding.
About a year and a half ago, we did our first video on ATV Trail Etiquette. For this version of mistakes riders make, we took the top 5 comments from that video to discuss rules of the trail that riders should keep in mind.
#1: Passing with Loud Exhaust and Music
When out on the trails you often come across other riders. These riders may just be moving slowly or stopped on the side of the road. When approaching, remember to slow down and turn the music down. This is two-fold, by slowing down your exhaust will become quieter, and it will also help keep dust and rocks from kicking up on other riders. While some enjoy loud music and exhaust, others don't. So slowing down and turning the music down is a curtesy to the riders around you.
#2 Waiting for other Riders at Turns
This one can be more and more important the bigger your riding group is. The idea is simple, when approaching a turn, stop at the turn, look behind you, and make sure the rider coming up next see's where you turn. Whether to avoid dust or just to get space, we all often like to spread out along the trail. Waiting at the turn ensure the rider coming up next does not miss the turn and goes the wrong way.
#3 Parking Lot Racers
This one is all too common and just outright dangerous. When in and around the trailhead, slow down. That might seem obvious, but riders get excited to get out on the trail or back to their trailer and tend to go way too fast. That's not even accounting for those that just don't care and speed around in areas they shouldn't. A lot is happening at a trailhead parking lot, so we should all make sure to slow down and be aware of everything happening around us at the trailhead.
#4 Don't Drink and Ride
I hesitate to bring this one up because every rider has heard it many times. Sadly, it's still a big problem, however. So the message is simple. Please don't drink and ride. Save the drinks for after the ride (If it's legal for you!) when everyone can relax and talk about the great day they had riding.
#5 Trail riding without lights
This is the one I always screw up on. I seem to forget all too often to turn my lights on when riding the trails. When someone notices and tells me, I gladly turn them on. While many riders prefer you to ride with your lights on, its actually a law in every state I am aware of. So even if you aren't doing it for other riders, you should at least do it for yourself.
So there we have it, the 5 most common complaints from riders that they wish others would follow (or at least the top 5 not discussed last time). Number 1 is still all the trash some riders leave behind, but have already covered that one....but seriously, pick up your trash, please!
Let's hear your thoughts, leave a comment below with the biggest mistake you see other riders make out on the trail. As always, thanks for watching, and I hope to see you on the trail!

I've also been a headlight offender up until very recently, now I'll turn them on whenever I see other vehicles on the trail. Sometimes even when I don't. I think my biggest pet peeve is with the trash! I can't for the life of me think why someone would just dump it anywhere they feel. You take it in, you take it out!

sport quads don't have headlights. I have them on my atv but never heard of using them in daytime. been riding a lot of places in PA but never seen many use them, also no signs at atv parks recommending them.. Is this a west thing? Dirt bikes also ride where we ride and only a few of them have lights. Sounds like a good idea, i'll start using them.

Right on! Great list. Don't know how I haven't stumbled into your channel till just now but fellow mn rider here and one of my complaints is people not staying on the marked trails! We need more trails out here and people riding off the marked trail is one of the biggest points people use against us as the off-road community here for getting new trails built. Would love to hit the trails with you around here some day! Nemadji, red top, and all the systems along the north shore are great places to rip around. Also the iron range area with the ohv Park and all the trails up there out side the park will give you days worth of great scenic riding!!

I hate that people drink drive toss garbage all over steady picking up cans or trash but odds are never get rid those type people :(

Yeppers; people continue to amaze me with their astounding levels of stupidity. Own land on ATV trail... Trash/litter, loud music blaring, stupid loud exhaust for no reason and people shooting on trail (yes, firing off guns); are all the reasons I am thinking about taking my land out of the trail... Don't think people realize that most of the ATV trails are owned by someone via donation / permission.

@@Aerogrow Unfortunate things like this happen to anyone worse yet land owners trying give back by allowing Access . Understand feel your pain to bad theres those who destroy it for the masses . I would do no less if was me even tho i enjoy the sport so much . Just know there are some us respect closed signs no shooting stay on Designated trail . My self ride 95 % crown land / public land old roads & trails as rule never ever run into or across private land . Odd time on powerlines ppl have grazing rights we still have access but are gates in those rare times most ppl close them but i have found open as well .

I would agree with this list and the only thing I might add would be to ride with space when in groups so hopefully no one is crashing into each other! I ride a Honda Rancher 4x4 and while I’m sure it has good brakes, This machine I figure like probably all others sold today has so much compression I never need the brakes to slow down or even stop fast which means you won’t get a brake light! That’s why extra riding space is very important, but in truth I’m just an old guy who rides slow anyway so I’d probably never be in front of anybody anyways!

Great video tips, one question though: riding a 4x4 on flat surface like a dry lake firm sand surface; to avoid from flipping over when turning should I shift to 2x4 before start riding or should I keep the 4x4 option on ? In other words, are there more chances to flip over with the 4 wheel’s traction ON or should I shift to 2 wheel’s traction instead, before start riding it? Thank you

I think it has more to do with the speed you are going when turning a corner than whether you are in 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. If you are going too fast in a corner your chances of flipping the ATV increase.
@truckercarter09
@truckercarter09 2 жыл бұрын
Only use 4x4 when you actually need it because having it in 4x4 isn't great on fuel economy and it can possibly tear up your drive train when riding so unless its soft dirt, mud, or hillclimbing, leave in 2x4

Whole time for some reason I was laughing thinking about the tree going "sir, excuse me sir! You parked your noise maker on my foot. This is unnecessary to talk to yourself!" Question though! I just started 4wheeling a year ago. This year I'm finding more advanced trails to go on. What is the trail etiquette for speed around blind corners? Is it ok to bomb them as long as you stay to your right or do you need to slow way down? I've had multiple people bomb them so fast they didnt have time to throw up a hand to let me know there were 5 more riders coming. (I may or may not be guilty too)

Along with waiting at a turn before making it I periodically stop and wait for fellows riders to catch up just in case they're having a problem and need help. The further I ride on without waiting for a catch up the further I'll have to ride back to see what the hold up is. When waiting for other riders it really makes a difference when they have their headlights on. You can literally see them through the forest three times further with headlights on than without. Thanks for the awesome videos! Maybe a video showing how to ride a more technical section in the future.

Thanks for the in depth response Colorado Kodiak! You bring up a great point I didn't even touch on with waiting in case they need help (wish I would have thought to mention that). It's a great point, especially if they need help because something happened. It's less of an issue if their machine just stopped, but who is to say they didn't roll over or get hurt. I have been on a ride where I noticed someone missing and sure enough they ended up tipping their machine a little way's back. Good idea on the "how to ride" video! I will give that one some thought.

Little late to the party, but another thing that I see closing down parks left and right in WNC is, STAY ON THE TRAIL... we have had so many small parks and even larger one close down to the public due to riders tearing up off trail locations.

pet peeve of mine is the guy who finds a line makes it through and then stops right in middle in the middle and end of the line so that the people have to either stop ,slow down or find another line out of the messy mud ,then stands there and watches them trying to manuver around him ,it is just rider ediquet to move out of the way so that all get through instead of having to help the second , thgird or fouth guy out of the soggy sluff .

One of the biggest issues ive seen is people who ride on the wrong side in a blind turn or park on the wrong side in a blind turn. Ive come into blind turns hugging the inside so i dont go head on with anyone and some (insert bad word) goes head on with me. Not cool and you can seriously hurt someone.
@NavigateOffroad

Great point! Many accidents have been caused this way. To double tap on something you said here as well....riders should be aware of their surroundings when parking, and not park on corners!

a blind corner should always be taken at slow speed but not everyone gets that. Nobody should stop there either unless broken down.

Another one is letting passing riders know how many people are behind you you hold up a number to show them and they wave they just don’t know that it means hey I have someone behind me I did this every time and not once did someone do anything but wave

The same reason it's the law to have your headlights on in the daytime in most countries around the world, it's just easier to see someone. Like others mentioned, sometimes there is thick dust, there is deep contrast from open areas to wooded areas in trees, sometimes riders get back-lit with bright sunlight and you can't see them, if it's a gray day motor vehicles can easily blend into the background. You can see someone coming from a mile away on a straight away with their headlights on and you may not see someone 100 yards away that are in front of them. Headlights are simple and one of the most important safety features of a motor vehicle.

I don't like listening to music when I'm riding I find it very distracting. I also don't like having loud exhaust because I tend in ride in places that I'm not supposed to. Loud exhaust sounds awesome at first but when I'm riding for several hours it gets annoying.

Here is number 6 this is a big one for me. If your riding with an infant in your side by side which is a stupid thing to do!!! When I am behind you pull over so I can get bye, please be respectful I cannot stand people who are willing to jeopardize there kids safety because they think it's okay to take an infant out on the trails then drive 2 mph. Please get a baby sitter. I am out here to have fun and go fast that is why I have an ATV.
