Glad to finally see Cici play her Bass VI. I had one for a year and found what I was really looking for was a baritone for my ambient music. However, the bass VI is great for solo work. You have the low and high register represented. In an odd way it’s a great electric instrument for a classical guitarist.

The Bass VI! I've always wanted one. The Beatles used one anytime a right hander needed to play bass. However this thing to me screams Robert Smith of the Cure. He used it more like a guitar to great effect.

Mustang. All day, everyday. Every time one of my guitar player friends asks: What bass should I buy? It’s a Mustang every time. Especially for the not particularly heavy music players. Bought one of the JMJ Mustangs coming from mainly playing P’s, fell in love with it, flats on there and thump-a-gogo.

My, >ahem< "studio" is pretty cramped, just enough space for to play guitar, so when I got a bass it had to be a smaller short scale, and I have to say the Jackson JS1X is just way more badass for it's size and price than it has any right to be. Also perfect for any 80s lovers out there.

As a drummer who started playing guitar who then started getting some basses, I've ended up the following: - White Squier Bass VI. I put a Staytrem bridge and locking fender trem plate and black pickguard. - Candy Apple Red 30" Squier Short Scale Jaguar PJ bass. I put DiMarzio Area PJ set in. Hipshot Kickass bridge. Hipshot ultralite tuners with the extender drop d tuner and a black pearloid pickguard. Changed the stock VVT wiring to V/Blend/T wiring with blend knob that doesn't have the volume drop in the middle. - Ibanez 28" Mikro. Left stock. - Metallic Orange 32" Squier Jaguar H bass. Just arrived today, not sure if I'll leave it stock or not. I'd like to get an Ibanez SRC6. Those things look so good. The only downside to short scale basses are the lack of string selection. You can order custom gages from places like String Joy, but if you're only able to get packs from Ernie Ball or D'Addario, you'll be stuck with only a couple of choices.

Dave’s take was interesting. Good video. I’ve always been a guitarist first and a bassist second. However, have played bass in a few bands over the years. But it was guitar I started on. My first bass was a P Bass I bought off a school mate back in the early 80’s. It wasn’t the best tbh. It was dreadfully set up & didn’t know what I do now about how to maintain and set up instruments. So understandably didn’t keep it that long. The next bass but the first proper foray into the world of bass was a lovely Squier Standard Jazz Bass. Nice neck, logical pick-up and control layout. Had that bass for years served me well. Never considered short scale of Six string basses. Have owned 5 string basses over the years which never really jelled with. Tried a Baritone which is sort of like the Bass VI but again like 5 string never really jelled with. Recently bought a couple of PBasses and love them. Of course I also replaced the lovely Jazz I used to own with a modern version. And it’s still so familiar. My recommendation would be try P Bass, try Jazz Bass. And go with which ever suits. For me I never tried to play a bass like a guitar. Playing bass lines was the obvious choice when faced with 34” scale lengths. Would I buy a short scale. Of course. Hofner 500/1 or a fender short scale might be an option Jaguar or Mustang would be options. I do tend to rotate through Acoustic to Electric, to Bass and Mandolin, then back again as the whim takes me. Will settle on one or the other for a while. Think we all have different experiences, expectations and takes upon things. I know when I have my Bass head on I zone in very rapidly on the lines in songs. Do wonder whether other zone in, in this fashion.

I’m a guitar player and a bass player. Learning to play the bass is invaluable as a musician, you get a much better sense of rhythm and time. Been said that, rather than looking for basses for guitarist you must focus in learning to play it as a whole different instrument, cause that’s what it is. Even a Monkey can play roots, actually playing the bass it’s a whole different beast. When I really picked the bass I spent 6 years gigging exclusively as a bass player. Give the instrument time and respect, it’s a gorgeous thing

I've been a guitar player for 50 years, but occasionally like to dabble with bass. What you soon realise on switching over, is that it is a completely different instrument, which requires a completely different mindset and set of skills. It's akin to moving from clarinet to trumpet. Sure...you can play it like a guitar, but it will sound too "busy", and just plain wrong. It isn't the bass job to be "busy". It is much more akin to playing the drums on strings. Less is more. I've settled on 5 string bass, purely because of the use of two octaves across the fretboard, and the access to lower notes. I've also settled on a pure wood finish, neck thru design, and active pick-ups. Just my choice. The only downside of 5 string is the difficulty in playing slap, but I am pretty tired of listening to that tbh, and hearing a good fingerstyle player, to me, is much more fulfilling. Bernard Edwards comes to mind. Just my twopennorth...☺️👍

My first electric bass was the beginner-grade Epiphone version of the P-bass; I bought it in 1996. Despite having little hands that already had become accustomed to the scale of the Stratocaster, I don’t think I did half bad playing that sucker. I might’ve preferred getting a Bass Six, especially for all it can do that a standard bass can’t and also considering how people who drafted me into the bass chair later tried talking me into playing with more low end and less high end (and less “flash”). I couldn’t explain to them that it was bad enough that I wasn’t allowed to choose which instrument I had to play; I also couldn’t choose how I got to play it. I have got a Squier Bass Six today, and I haven’t done too badly at playing it with my fingertips. I depend on a hybrid of bass-playing technique and the classical guitar technique I was taught in 2003. The string spacing is occasionally problematic, but I try not to let it stop me.

I’ve always played bass and guitar. My first bass was a Hohner short scale. Then I bought a P-Bass. I struggled more with changing basses than going from guitar to bass If you play guitar and want a bass- buy a standard scale bass. It’s a totally different instrument and should be learnt as such. Having said that , short scale basses are so much fun.

When I moved to Bass as a guitar player, I actually got an Ibanez SR with a very thin neck, which felt very guitar like. Even though it sounded okay, I think if you really want to get into bass (and not just use it for fun occasionally), it can be a bit dangerous as it really spoiled my technique - took a while to get it right after getting a bass with a normal sized neck.

The lower 4 strings on a guitar have the same notes as a normal 4 string bass. An experienced guitar player can use this to their advantage. Of course the techniques of how to pluck and pick the strings are different but with a little practice it becomes a normal thing and soon your playing bass. Also it should be nited that tuning is easier and if you have a full 24 frets (like that Ibanez) the entire octave repeats, which is great for composition.

Because it feels so different to a guitar and it's difficult to play compared to other basses I have owned. When I play bass, I want to play BASS. I just love it. As a guitar player, my biggest issue when playing a bass is that I maintain fingernails on my right hand for playing fingerstyle with nylon string and acoustic guitars. When I play bass those fingernails make an annoying noise, get in the way, and can get damaged. I'm not sure what the best work-around for this might be.

Love a mustang! But tbh the best bass for guitarists is probably just a standard 34” 4 string. It’s not a guitar, you’re not playing a guitar now, just sever the mental link between the two and hop on the rhythm train. When I pickup a guitar I don’t need a special gateway guitar, I just pickup my tele usually and play.

First of all, excellent video, thank you. I always enjoy watching CiCi and Dave play together, doesn't matter what or where. Secondly, as a long time guitar player, I bought my first bass several years ago, I opted for the Hofner violin (Beatle) bass. I love it, very light, shorter scale, it was very easy for me to pickup and play. My second bass is a Fender jazz bass, which I honestly don't play very much, it's a struggle for me. And Santa just brought me a Squier bass vi, it has been a delight. Tons of fun, picked it up & felt comfortable really quickly. Plugging in a Big Muff fuzz or distortion like a RAT and riffing is a blast.

It's one of those things I have always meant to do as a guitarist: Pick up a Bass to see how it feels. I've convinced myself my hands are too small though.

Get a short-scale...like a Mustang. Ibanez do a good short-scale Talman for not much money.

@@christoguichard4311 I have the Talman, and I'm happy with it. Overall it's the same size as my Mustang guitar and it has a blend control for the two pickups, while the Player Mustang only has a switch. The Performer does have the blend knob and a relocated input jack, but is a lot more expensive and was unavailable at the time.

I’m on the guitar slinger side, but can also play bass. Just like any modern stringed instrument, it all begins with the neck. Either it feels right or it doesn’t.

Cici Besides Jack Bruce who used his on The Fresh Cream Album ,John Paul Johns had one also. Check His History. Jack switched to His Famed Gibson EB-3 because that Psychedelic artist that painted Eric's SG and Jacks Bass VI . Jack said his paint on his never dried properly. It always felt tacky. The rest is History.

The Bass Vi’s low register, 4 strings, are sonically exactly that of a bass, it’s the feel and not being able to play conveniently with fingers that are different. The pickup tones are also voiced with less bass frequencies ,… but the register is the same . I’m surprised you are getting this wrong.

It depends. Do you think of a bass as "just a big guitar with thicker strings" or as a separate instrument?

Lot's of very accomplished bass players have used the Fender VI....check out Ray Babbington in Soft Machine in the '70's for an example.

Short scale basses always sound a bit bassier to me - if that makes sense.

A bass is a fantastic instrument, but they always were a bit intimidating. I have small hands, am playing a 24 inch Fender Musicmaster while watching this. The Mustang looks and sounds alright, but then all those bass player jokes would apply to me. Not sure if I'm confident enough to take that.😂

Dave touched on it already but some string brands offer full-scale 34" sets in very light gauges, like 35-95 or even 30-90, they are definitely worth checking out if going straight from guitar to full scale bass.
