What is the best software for music production?
You may have asked yourself the question, like i did.
In the video I’ll discuss some things that can help you choosing your DAW
[2]
What is the best DAW?
The answer to that question may surprise you.
[BUMPER]
[3]
Welcome back, how are you doing? Marvelously well.
If you are new consider subscribing.
[4]
I want to give a shoutout to Pianogy for a very insightful comment in my video about RAM for music production.
He basically said that sampled instruments are taking up more memory than non sampled synthesizers
Thank you for that comment
Also If you can add something useful to the video for other viewers, don’t hesitate to do so in the comments
[5]
What is the best DAW?
I’ll start with the question answer it immediately.
The best daw is the daw of your preference where you can work the quickest and most comfortable with.
I can’t tell you which DAW to use, but I can give you some guidelines and examples on choosing the best DAW for you.
[6]
Don’t listen to anyone else who says you need to work with ….
Every DAW has its strengths weaknesses.
I can’t tell you which DAW is the best.
If there was one DAW that was the best for everyone, everybody would use it.
[7]
There are a couple of different DAWs out there.
I will name a few, starting off with the bigger ones:
FL Studio
Logic Pro X
Ableton Live
Pro Tools
[8]
Less famous are:
Studio One
Reaper
Cubase
But there are other DAWS out there
[9]
FL studio started out as Fruity Loops.
In 2018 they released a Mac version. So it is available on Windows and Mac.
FL studio has a bit of an image problem, because a lot of producers don’t take the software seriously.
FL studio does things differently and that’s why a lot of people don’t like it.
It has also the image of being free, but I have yet to come across a legal free version.
To be honest I have never tried the software, so I cant really say much useful about it
But when I look at the price of the full version, 900 euro, I think you have better alternatives for less money.

The Logical Editor in Cubase lets you perform operations on whole tracks and objects in a Cubase project in one clean sweep! For example if you want to lower the velocity of all the hi hats in a midi drum track without changing the velocity of the other drums you can do it with a few clicks instead changing them one by one!

Cubase is a complete DAW for any type of music style. It's user freindlyness and main window's all in all editing make it the most useful DAW for the professionals. If you want unlimited options for music making then Reaper is the solution. But it's learning curve is a bit steep. First give some time to learn the basics of Reaper. After a while you will love it . The options i reaper are unlimited for a minimum price one could afford.

If it weren't for Reaper, I might not even entertain the notion of delving into music technology. All the rest seem too expensive to me. Not that they aren't worth it, but they are definitely a chunk of cash. I'm hoping to use my vacations to learn a bit more and use it professionally and not just as an amateur aficionado.

@shamanbear3 It seemed confusing to me at first, probably because I expected to do some things a certaing way (like deciding what kind of track I wanted beforehand). I plan to go through all of Kenny´s tutorials and try to get a better hang of what Reaper can do.

If you have experience in computer programming or web design, Reaper is a dream come true. But if you don’t want to spend a vast amount of time learning to configure it, it may be worth seeking other options. I find myself in Logic when I have a big project and don’t really know where it will take me. Reaper is great for specialized work, where you know what you need and want an efficient, tailored for you, workflow. I adore Reaper, but sometimes I don’t want to learn how to search for the question I need to ask the search engine to learn how to configure Reaper to my liking. You can always configure it, but figuring out how can take a hit out of your creativity while you would rather be playing with sound.

Mixcraft is pretty good. I use it sometimes. I don't plan to upgrade it. I do most of my stuff in FL Studio and occasionally record in Mixcraft. I asked for better sampler. Another thing that FL does better is automation. In Mixcraft you can do it but you have to search in a long menu. Automating synths in Mixcraft is way more difficult and that's why I usually don't start projects there.

I went with Reaper because it was cheap and you could use it for free nearly indefinitely. Reaper has about 9 million KZfaq tutorials as well. Reaper did do some buggy stuff in my old computer, which was grossly underpowered for music production to begin with. I don't know how much of the erratic behavior was Reaper vs how much was my now deceased Dell all in one 3048. Once I get a desktop with an I-7 9700 and 16gb of ram up in here, we'll see how Reaper behaves.

The prices you mentioned about Pro Tools are for the Ultimate version. The regular version of Pro Tools costs a lot less and has almost all the features of Ultimate except surround and number of channels. I've been using it for the past 15 years and I've tried all DAW's. In mixing territory there's no other like it, for music production you may be right but if you got some third party sw it's really powerful with the new implementations. About the bugs in Logic and S1 it's probably your system I use Logic and S1 here sometimes and never had those issues. About Studio One, I guess it really could be the only software nowadays that could make me leave PT for good I've been using it on some projects and the gap is narrowing down in each upgrade they release. So, I'm not sure if your review is accurate enough you should do a little more research and be a little less biased.

Like you said, the best DAW is the one you know how to use efficiently. Pick one and learn it well. I use Reaper. It's inexpensive to start (free if you are really too broke to pay) and low cost to buy when you are ready. It's written in C so it's fast and very easy on RAM and CPU. It's is updated often. It has a complete scripting language. The interface can be changed to work like Pro Tools or other DAWs. It can take time to learn and configure but the payoff is very fast workflow. I hate the MIDI editor in it. Last, unless you invest in a good audio interface the lag in recording can be a challenge for beginners.

Well, I dont really use them regularly but here's what I can say : *LMMS* lmms.io/ is a kind of Fruity Loops I would say and you have *Ardour* ardour.org/ who is close to Cubase, the two are Open Source and multiplatform. _Pros :_ they feel like classic DAWs. _Cons :_ learning curve (not sure ;) ) Next to these you have another approach with the _Trackers_, coming from the 80's/90's on Atari and Amiga. The best one IMHO is *Renoise* www.renoise.com/ (not free but not really expensive and the demo version has quite the full capabilities) and *MilkyTracker* who is totally free milkytracker.titandemo.org/. These two ones are multiplatform. Many other trackers exist. _Pros :_ easy to learn at first time, if you like the tracker format. These softwares are very light and *can be executed on old or small machines*. _Cons :_ The interface can feel very small at first sight. Hope this helps ;)

I like FL studio its the best groove-box daw - quick and fast and has great piano-roll and if you produce EDM you don't need anything else , If you want to record acoustic instruments and vocals I think its better to do it in other daw's , as far as advanced editing tools for audio - I think Cubase is the best . but as far as Live preformance goes there are only two contenders - Abelton live and Bitwig. all the rest are production Daw's but it also requires a suitable laptop to run without glitches.

There is one very big misconception about Logic Pro X that was reinforced in this video. That there is no trial version of Logic Pro X. Yes, in purely technical terms, there is not trial version of LPX. However there is one caveat. Garageband! In every Mac sold, there is Garageband installed. It's free and is a fully functional DAW, and it works and looks very much like LPX. Matter of fact, you can open songs made in Garageband (GB) in LPX. If you can work with GB then you can most certainly figure out LPX. So GB is the trial version of LPX, a trail version that has no time, track or any other such limits. Doesn't have all the features of LPX, but you get a lot for free.

Also, please be aware that the *Full* version of FL Studio is actually 250 EUROS. I also want to record audio and some external instruments. A big thing i don’t want to miss out on is any plug-ins/instruments to fully customize and contort the sounds to my liking. I also want learning the software to be as easy as possible/ not intimidating (but that’s not as important as sound customization). Any suggestions ?

Well I believe that musicians can choose whatever works for them . But there is a DAW that is the mother of all DAWs. That is Steinberg's Cubase! If you are talking about the least weaknesses, then Cubase has no weaknesses at all. The company behind Cubase is innovative too. They created the VST technology that most DAWs implemented now. in pro tools for example you cant move a note up/down an octave until now. but Cubase had that feature back in 1985 when it runs in the Atari St computers. That is so funny. Cubase doesn't set the bar but it is the bar! Now you can compare among all other DAWs. lol!! I can provide you with tons of examples on why Cubase is the best and the most comfortable to use. Frim hardware integration to update reputations.

@@vuraxis953 Cubase can be changed so you see or do not see left, right, upper or lower panels, and can be modified via color as you prefer it. You can take a snapshot of any VST even non cubase related ones and that will be the graphical image you interface with on the rightmost panel. There is pricing in Cubase for each type of musician: free versions that come with hardware, Elements which is an entry level for under 100 dollars, Artist Version which is designed as a mid tier version for composers and home studios with less total tracks. Pro is designed with no limitations in terms of tracks and has exceptional editing tools such as Variaudio which allow one to modify audio in the same way as one can modify MIDI data. As it was the first DAW and created the VST standard, this omission in makes the review lacking in objectivity.

For a decent version (producer edition) FL is much more affordable also. I wish someone would compare the lower cost editions as a starting point because the functions that differ between these and the full versions can often be the difference between being able to achieve what you want and not

I find I spend most time with GarageBand because the workflow is really fast. It also uses all the Logic loops and plug-ins and Apple seem to spend more time on GB fixing problems than on Logic. I think not all of these DAWs are great for beginners. They are pretty complicated and overloaded with features that beginners have no clue what they even do. I tried most of the DAWs from the video when I first started out and even though I was a musician for 10 years (electric guitar - so I know what effects do for the most part) I was completely overwhelmed by all the crazy menus and buttons and cryptic symbols. In my opinion beginners should start with - Garage Band (Mac only) - Stagelight - FL Studio Mobile -(and maybe Reaper, because it's inexpensive?) -->Reasons: They all have beautiful and intuitive touch interfaces (except Reaper). That make mixing and producing actually fun! They have just the essential features but still enough instruments/plugins/effects to make good music. Linkin Park for example used Stagelight. And lastly: They are free and/or very cheap. Personally, my favorite and the one I stuck with is Stagelight. It's so easy and intuitive! It's on every platform, it's mostly free (you have to spend 50$ to unlock VST plugin support on Windows) and it has everything you need.

The Cakewalk software is a tad primitive here and there, but it's got a ton of plug-ins. You could spend your life just exploring a major orchestra of instruments. It's a got a slight but occasionally annoying drop-out problem when you use a lot of small clips, but overall it's easy to use and you can certainly get excellent results with it. no reason in particular... I wanted to give some pros and cons of DAW that I can actually say something useful about, either from experience or experiences of producers around me. I talk about stuff I know, more people on youtube should do that. If I don't include logic, logic people are pissed, if I don't include FL studio, those fan will burn me down. I even got some really nasty comments from people that named DAWs I never even heard of ... and some people took a stab at me for not mentioning destructive audio editors as DAWS. (????). It get's even weider: I even got some heat from people because of the order I named DAWs. There is NO order 😂. The DAW I use myself is last in the big list 😂 You can't do it right for everyone I guess

I’m looking for something simple or easy to use. I find once I’ve finished composing/arranging and recording that I just don’t have the energy to deal with a hard user interface,

A simple interface means also less functionality. I suggest Ableton, that seems to be a good middle. An online DAW is even simpler: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esyXebljq8mRY4k.html but you will grow out of it

Well, there are actually many mistakes in the video. I commonly use Logic, Ableton and Pro Tools and in every of these, you have VST/AU plugins and also in all of these, it's very simple to search and use them. Let's start with Logic. It's true that it has some annoying bugs, but we all know that apple doesn't care about pro users any more. On the other hand it is still the best optimised DAW for Mac and still have some of the best DSP processors and encoders. In Ableton it's pretty simple to use plugins of all kinds and automate every parameter of them. You just have to click "configure" button and map parameters. Next things, you don't like in Ableton, are also very simple to change and it's not really a problem so... The last thing is Pro Tools. It's true that it is the most complicated DAW and beginners without any knowledge may get lost, but it is the most powerful DAW yet. It actually has all of the "serious" features that you won't find in every other DAW, like Atmos mixing, RATAS and AAX plugins, best hardware integration, etc. Also it has the most advanced virtual DSP processors and encoders so after all, there must be a reason why it is in "every professional studio" and it's called "industry standard" ;)
