Sponge filters are the best but I prefer the corner matten filter because you can use the cavity to house media, a heater and even a spare intake sponge. Have been running mattens for 4 years now and have only needed to remove them twice for cleaning. You can get around the issue of substrate falling into the space by either creating a barrier or by cutting a couple of inches off the bottom before using to create a stacked effect. Another trick for the matten is to cover it with moss or subwassertang and use a hair net to hold the plants in place. Within months the matten becomes a wall of green which helps it blend into your aquascape.
@BobMossNanoTanks

I think I would do a corner matten if I ever did it, they do look a lot cleaner. Do you know of any videos showing the substrate barrier you mentioned? I'd love to take a look at how it's done.

@BobMossNanoTanks

I try to once a month, sometimes it ends up being twice, sometimes it's once every two months lol. As long as they have some suction, they are working. I use my water change water and just squeeze it until crap stops coming out. I am actually planning a video showing basic shrimp tank maintenance like this :)

Sponge filters are the best. How do you take care of little floaties in the water? With a sponge filter, I can't polish the water. On my large community tank, I have a canister and I can customize it with a mix of sponge, bio-rings, and filter floss. However, I'm only using a sponge with my shrimp only tank and just can't get the water as clear.
@BobMossNanoTanks

I wouldn't worry too much tbh, the little floaty things aren't a bad thing. You want lots of microfauna and life in your shrimp tanks.

Sponge filters are the best! I have a Bob Ross chia head that a friend gave me as a gag gift. Maybe I’ll stick him in the aquarium. Do you have any recommendations for sponge filter brands? I’m looking at doing a 5.5g shrimp only tank.
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks Жыл бұрын
Glue some moss on and join the club xD one of us! one of us! Tbh, they are basically all the same. A tube with a sponge around it, can't really mess that up. That said, I have heard great things about the "Hydro-Sponge", it's just a higher quality sponge material from what I can tell. Better off to get good value IMO as they're a relatively disposable product in the grand scheme of things. I use "Pawkoo" brand from amazon, mainly.

I’m trying a sponge filter in my 3 gallon shrimp and plant tank, but it creates a ton of condensation on the glass lid from the bubbles. The tank is only 9 inches high. Any idea as to how to combat the buildup of water on the inside of the tank lid?
@BobMossNanoTanks

You can buy these attachments with bends in them so that it directs the bubbles horizontal rather than vertical. I forget the technical name but aquarium co-op has some if i recall correctly.

@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 10 ай бұрын
Sponge filters are the best for most set ups unless you need higher flow like hillstream loaches. A hang on back with a sponge on the intake works well, also, but provides less surface area for shrimp to graze. Ultimately it is your decision but I am partial to sponges.

Curious why you mentioned to remove the carbon from the hob filters? If you can comment on why that is I'd be grateful
@lindensack
@lindensack 2 жыл бұрын
I found the answer in someone else's comment. So it's because the carbon will decrease the growth of biofilm (and presumably algae)?
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 2 жыл бұрын
@@lindensack The carbon removes heavy metals, which if you're running artificial decor is a good thing. But if you have live plants, this is what they use for nutrients. If you have carbon in the filter your plants will suffer as well as the reduced biofilm / algae. Sorry for the delay, baby keeps me busy.

I saw you mentioned not to use canisters on shrimp tanks. I have actually seen videos of Vin the shrimp breeder and his set ups. He is a very famous black galaxy/boa breeder. He connects the intake hoses directly into the sponge filters. So it has all the benefits of the huge space for biological media as well as the sponge filter for grazing. Really cool concept for larger tanks.

@@BobMossNanoTanks the intakes are the exact same as a regular HOB filter, so sponge or intake sponge works well. I have one tank with a canister and it clogs way less than my HOB's. The pumps power is way better than a HOB, but the price is the factor lol

Man I just saw this and I was wondering if shrimp can thrive if there is high flow, I mean I thought about it and they are found in rivers that have slow currents which are way higher flow than even what a Fluval U1-2-3-4 can put out. I have been considering it for a 55 gallon, but I'd DIY a bit, remove that garbage filtration they come with and add 30ppi sponge media on the sides, maybe seachem matrix in the middle, and put like a 1" or 2" glued 60ppi sponge on the sides to make flow not suck in baby shrimp or drive them to exhaust themselves on there. I honestly don't know if they ll stop breeding if I have an area with high flow and an area with lower flow as it slows down while it hits that wall of fissidens moss. I feel like the nutrient redistribution into the water column should also help a lot, unless I missed out anything, but I certainly will wait a week or 2 before removing the sponge filter if I go with it. Anyways, great video as always, and i watched it all. Honestly in my tanks where I use sponge filters I never clean them, because rotifers and moina live in them which is like infinite renewable food supply that spreads and establishes in the entire tank 😀

Thanks for the helpful video man. I have a quick question, I'm about to set-up an 8 gal caridina shrimp tank for breeding and I have two filters available, a Aquaclear 20 and a canister filter (aqua one aquis 500). The Aquaclear is probably sufficient but the canister filter just seems like the better option if you have it lying around? Can more filtration ever be a bad thing? How would you approach this situation? Thanks again for the helpful channel.
@BobMossNanoTanks
@BobMossNanoTanks 3 жыл бұрын
The canister might have too much flow for such a small tank, tbh. I'm not sure if that one has an adjustable flow. I would just hot rod and baffle the aquaclear and save the canister for a larger tank. You CAN over filter a tank, especially of you're using something like carbon as the media. The signs of it are a lack of biofilm, the over filtration is taking everything out of the water so nothing gets that "slime" on it.
