The kitchenaid wins from a size/storage perspective. Those of us with normal size kitchens don’t have room to store a dedicated machine for meat grinding that we may only use a few times a year.

I've been grinding meat to make cat and dog food for 7+ years. The plastic Kitchenaid attachment cannot handle bones of any species and the plastic housing is known to crack under stress even without grinding bones. The instructions also specify to not use any speed above #4 with the grinder attachment. The model I use is the Tasin-108 which is the most popular model for raw pet diets as well as grinding meat for human consumption and sausage making. It uses universally sized blades and plates so getting replacements is relatively easy. It also has a reverse button.

I believe Kitchen Aid recommends using the grinder on mixer setting 4. For versatility and space savings though, using a stand mixer as a meat grinder just makes more sense. The Kitchen Aid does a serviceable job grinding meats and is probably one of the best mixers out there. I'll stick with it.

I have to agree. I've still got my grandmother's old hand crank grinder, and it works great. The only time I use my mom's electric one is if I am making a big batch of sausage. The hand crank isn't that hard, so it's easy to do your own burger or meatloaf grinds with it. I hate listening to the whine of the motor on the electric ones. I figure anything making that loud and unpleasant a noise can't be good. Seeing them vibrate would terrify me. ;)

Dol _ I haven’t had any problems with that but I believe the reason there’s black stuff coming out in the grind is because the parts of the grinder are not cold enough when starting the grind. I always put my parts in salted ice water for about 15 minutes before the grinding process, and then put it back in the ice water before I grind a second time. Hope this helps

I grind meats once a month so Kitchenaide is best for me...cut meat into long strips and feed it in. Easy and safe. Make sure some fat is involved for the grinding; add drops of oil down the neck if the meat seems to stick. Speed setting is 3 max...faster isn't necessary. I wouldn't grind bones for my dog but I will make stock and broth.

So depending on your expectations, and if you can get one for half the price of the new all metal version, it may be good enough.

I wouldnt buy the kitchenaid because the motor has to work double. For instance you make a cake and after you use it for grinding. So it gets old sooner than somebody who only makes cake woth it. But if you pay the same amount of money to another grinder then your kitchen aid stays newer. If the kitchen aid gets broken replacing it costs alot more.
