Nick Ortiz likes to use the hands off method when it comes to teaching. I contacted him some time ago. He responded but never got back to me later when he said he would follow up. The ghosting and ignoring others meta for teaching can be quite inspirational if I do say so myself.

I've always found it odd how people always go to the "not all blackbelts are the same". That's like me playing in a basketball league in South Texas, and someone mentions how NBA players could school me. You don't say?!
@accain13148 ай бұрын
Your South Texas league is closer to the blue belt rec league vs the black belt NBA. "Not all black belts are the same" would be more like Steph Curry vs Jalen Green.

Its pretty cool to see some gyms I'll never get the chance to train at, very different styles of doing things. But my question is, whats better in your opinion, coaches working you through the concepts of jits or specific techniques?
@TylerSpangler8 ай бұрын
Concepts will go further, but will take longer to teach. Anyone can do X technique, but understanding the system to get to it is more important
@CommissarJake8 ай бұрын
@@TylerSpangler that makes sense, the coaches at my gym have decided to refocus on the concept side of things rather than technique, I'm sure it'll pay dividends in the long run.... But I do miss the technique stuff.
@rohitchaoji8 ай бұрын
I'm still a new white belt, but I'd like to add that for any skill that involves a practical/physical aspect, you need a combination of both. I'd not really understand the concept of things like levers, wedges, weight distribution, etc until I get on the mat and drill it with a training partner. I can watch hundreds of hours of John Danaher's instruction where he properly lays out the concepts, but I need it in my muscle memory more than my "brain memory", to actually be able to use it in practice. At the same time, if I understand the concepts, it will be easier to apply a technique without stressing too much about different variations of it, since if I know the concepts, it will be easier to make adjustments and somewhat automatically end up with a different variation.

The variety and depth of knowledge you get at Renzo's (Austin) is unrivaled. This week Meregali is showing his game plan for the September Gi fight. So although I agree with everything you said (small room, positional...) I still think you get a much higher value training at Renzo's vs other gyms (knowledge & system-wise), but if you care more about sparring and live rounds 10P downtown or fight factory is where it's at. (I still haven't been to B-team so no opinion on the gym so far)

WHY...just why would someone go for a scissor leg takedown on someone in an open mat/sparring session (especially if you dont know the guy)- pure dick move in my opinion. i love to roll hard and its good to have a competitive mindset but with this move in particular, the level of control is inherently offset by the amount of damage you can inevitably do to your training partner... rant over, love the videos btw keep it up dude :) !

I will join what others said about defamatory comments on teachers or any other person. Anyone can have a bad day or make mistakes. When you put someone's name on the internet, it remains there forever, hurting people forever even when they have addressed the issue and it is not relevant anymore. Please be careful with saying negative stuff about other people, specially when it is a relative minor thing or just a thing you saw happening once but you dont know if it is a recurrent thing. I have been victim of false accusations in the past and it really hurts and can be devastating for your mental health or professional career.

So you were apparently visibly struggling with a technique, and your instructor made eye contact with you...... did you ask for help? Kind of a weird complaint tbh, maybe to him you seemed like you had it under control? Don't assume
@Adam-cw5lb8 ай бұрын
Tyler, I've trained at B-Team for 3 months last year. All the instructors there were great, Nick Ortiz was brilliant as well and extremely helpful to all students. Maybe you caught him when he was having an off day. But it's not a good look when you use one evening session to judge his teaching and insinuate that he's a bad instructor. Especially when you highlight the falling out he had with B-Team. It's kinda shitty of you Tyler. Also if you were stuck you could have simple asked him for help, not say "oh I made eye contact with an instructor and he's now supposed to be able to read my mind and help me" Do better Tyler
