Dude you just got some really high praise. My 75 year old mother has been living with me since Covid hit. I listen to lore quite a bit, especially when I'm eating. The other night I was watching you video on the Space Wolves and my mom asked me who you are because "he is the best of all those guys you listen to". She said you have a nice voice and explain things really well and actually interested her in all of this.

@@blingsing5383 thanks. Back in the day she could actually tell quite a few rappers apart from voice from us driving to school every day. Now every time she hears rap on the radio she's like Snoop/Eminem sound better. And she's not wrong!

I love that the T'au figured out the Codex pretty quickly and were able to outplay the space marines of the damocles gulf and have since had a reality check whenever they come across non-codex compliant or even Ultramarines now that Guilliman is in charge and can make on the fly decisions

I think the Codex Astartes gets a bad wrap amongst the fans. Yes, they limited the size of Astartes forces to 1000 space marines per force, or 1000 sword brothers and 5000 “Initiates” and 8000 “neophytes” if you’re the Black Templars, but that size limit kept shit from the Badab wars from getting out of hand and turning into another galaxy wide civil war. Yeah, the loyal legions had proven their loyalties, or at least their loyalties to the loyal primarchs, but as the loyal primarchs began disappearing, there was no guarantee of that loyalty staying. It also limits corruption of a space marine chapter to 1000 marines. Also the Codex was originally written by Guilliman as a training manual that all the legions were to read and learn as a hypothetical so each marine would have some tactical solutions on hand before ever facing a battle scenario and as a way to make inter-legion operations smoother because every marine will have the Codex to fall back on to reduce conflicting strategies.

Interestingly there is a similar thing I think in the book of numbers in the bible, where the formation of the isrelaites is given, It says something along the lines of “Captains over 1000s, captains over hundreds, and captains over 10s” Lots of very specific prescribed social shaping in those books, and lots of seeds that have grown into influences on 40k

The problem with the codex as a training manual is that for every Titus using it as intended, there's about three Leandroses waiting to say "space book says this bad." every time someone improvises. Not disagreeing with your points, just adding my two cents.

Comparing Space Marines to fantasy magic users is a bit apples to oranges because it's hard to tell how such magic stacks up to Psyker powers, but an average Space Marine 1v1 vs. a battle-hardened Jedi from Star Wars is a slight advantage to the Space Marine, and Space Marines working together is an exponential force multiplier--a bare bones basic squad of Space Marines is the equivalent of a small army against most opponents, especially from most other sci-fi.

for another chapter thats weird with scouts, iron hands clan companies recruit directly from their clans on medusa this also includes the first company veterans. avernii scouts go directly to the first company veterans. the veteran part comes from their bionics as they give the new veteran the "veteran" bionics of the previous marine.

Fun fact : if Guilliman added edits to the Codex Astartes upon his return, then the work is not based on logical necessity. It is then a legal work, and following it is an affirmation of devotion to the leader. So the Ultrasmurfs were right to worship it.

@@novsmith4547 A lot has been said that the Ultramarines were too devoted to the Codex Astartes, they say it was just a guidebook. However, Guilliman was willing to go to war in order to break up the legions. So it as much a declaration of how things should be rather than just education. That is, it was law. So worshipping the Codex Astartes is the logical course, as it was never intended to be the best treatise on astartes combat, it was meant to form astartes as Guilliman saw fit. Since the writings within are not absolutely necessary for astartes warfare, then chapters should be able to use it it discard it at a whim. But they can’t, because it is law. So the Ultramarines are right to evangelize for the codex at every turn, because they are reinforcing the law of the Imperium.

1) Can a Codex Compliant Chapter sport a melee-focused combat doctrine, even among its rank-and-file troops, or are bolters mandatory for compliance? 2) Does having an unusually high amount of psykers make a chapter non-compliant? 3) Can companies be deployed in smaller squads or strike teams while still being considered companies, ala The Alpha Legion? 4) Did fucking Burger King Moldova actually call fursuiters fucking Beast Man?

4:26 This is not tedious minutiae at all. This is the very basics of the book that even a serf who speaks low gothic is reasonably expected to understand. The tedious minutiae comes much later where they detail every single potential factor of a battle and what the best course of action may be in a specific unlikely scenario.
