As someone who grew up in Kalispell, I really enjoy your videos. In addition to a cost living comparison, it may be useful to compare the average family incomes of the cities you mentioned in the video and Kalispell. It may be eye opening for families considering the move. I'd also recommend a video of the valley in January and February so people see the complete picture.

Physicians are moving to the Great Plains and Mountain States as the salaries of MOST specialties are much higher in those areas than they are in California and New York City. And of course , the living cost is much lower. Despite this, there is a significant shortage in physicians in Montana in RURAL areas, especially in primary care practices. Any one retiring to Montana must make sure that they live in the vicinity that has the medical specialty that they require. In addition, if you decide to live in a resort area, you will find it more difficult to receive care dueing the high tourist season.

I love Montana in the summer and fall, but the winter leading into spring is what stops me from moving there. I hate the fact that you guys get 13 feet of snow in the winter! I’m retired and living outside Raleigh, NC although I have lived in 9 states, 7 west of Mississippi River (including Wooming and Alaska) and 3 foreign countries. After a recent 52 day trailer trip back out west (and a 35 day one in 2018) I really miss western US. During my recent trip I only drove through Montana going from Cody to Craters of the Moon in Idaho, although I overnighted in Butte, MT Walmart parking lot on the way. As a geoscientist I love looking at rocks and wildlife and hiking and have been thinking of moving to Wyoming, Idaho or Colorado (Grand Junction) to at least spend out a few more years of my life ( and access to public land for hiking is terrible in eastern US because it is limited). Your videos have intrigued me and started making me consider Montana, so I say thank you.

We have a primary residence in the Seattle area and a second home in Libby. We find the costs to be quite on par with one another after 5 years of second home ownership.Even fuel is only about $0.20 difference per gallon (lower in MT) and Washington has a gas tax somewhere about $0.73 per gallon. The availability of services is much lower here in MT because there seems to be fewer people who want to work. Took us 3 years to get lawn care and house cleaning (housecleaning is now in danger for us in year 5…she cannot find workers), firewood is hard to find…we are on our third provider in 5 years, winter snowplow guy has informed he will not be plowing in winter 2022, we are finally able to have a new shop constructed after waiting for available contractor since 2019. Finally getting my carpets cleaned this spring, they could not fit us in last fall. We had a 4 month wait to get new HVAC installed. Amazon orders used to deliver in 2-3 days, but now takes 7-9 which leases to higher cost on some things if you need to get them at the grocery or hardware stores in this smaller town. I’m hoping more young families with blue collar hard working parents move in. You could choose your own income if you are willing to start a service business. I believe a lawn care dad and a house cleaning mom would clear a very comfortable 6 figure post tax income just working 5 days a week. Further more, skilled trades folks (plumbers, electricians, etc) could also be highly successful in new business startups. We find ourselves wishing we were 20 years younger rather than retiring.

Fell in love with the beautiful country ! But now to old to build a log cabin and live way out. I would say that retired combat vets would feel very comfortable here in the land of guns, God and country…where folks are commonly seeking a space away from other folks. I still see women with the fake nails, calico kitty streaked hair, driving vanity cars and wearing sparkle butt jeans, but they are the exception not the rule. Same with guys wearing wife beaters, poorly executed tattoos, driving hoopty rust bucket trucks, dirty trucker hats and Duck Dynasty hair styles…the exception not the rule. Most people are real looking and acting with respect for the members of their community and the privacy they want. Our little town of Libby, MT is a very pleasant and friendly place…it was my first WOW impression when we first bought in 2017.

I really appreciate this breakdown you've done for us. To be fair though these cities like Seattle and LA are going to have far higher average home costs than the areas around them yet only 15 minutes away. I think a better comparison would be these places compared to the most expensive city in Montana. You could also use Kalispell vs many other areas around Seattle that have an average home cost of more on the order of $400-$450k. Still significantly higher but probably closer to a comp to the neighborhoods of Kalispell. In the greater Seattle area there are decent neighborhoods in the smaller cities and towns where that average is even lower. I don't know Kalispell at all so I can't really compare them, I just know that when cities list average home prices it is typically way high due to the palaces and the downtown neighborhoods that are crazy expensive throwing the numbers all askew. Most people can't, and don't, live in areas like that. Bozeman, or however you spell it, might be a more comparable city to Seattle or LA in terms of prices.

I'm going to Yellowstone next week to work a seasonal job that ends in September. I want to find a way to stay in Montana for good. I'm a certified water treatment and distribution operator, so hopefully I can put that to use. Do you have any advice on what places would be best to look at? Thank you!
@LivinginMontana1
@LivinginMontana1 4 жыл бұрын
Have fun in Yellowstone! I know they are doing a huge expansion on our treatment plant here in Whitefish. In Montana there are a lot of subdivisions that have "community" water (a large well that services all of the homes). I know that the state requires them to have someone with your credentials to do water tests on a regular basis, that might be a good business to look into. Have you been to Montana before? Is there an area that you like?
@gh87716
@gh87716 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information! I'll look into Whitefish. Those water testing jobs would indeed be most ideal for a person starting out in the business! Yet it being a resort town, won't the rent be slightly higher than in most other Montana towns? What would be the best town to look into in terms of rent and job opportunities? I've never been to the area, but I already know that it's a place I want to be. I'm not picky at all about the place. In fact, I'd be fine with being anywhere in Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming. Thanks again for your help!
@LivinginMontana1
@LivinginMontana1 4 жыл бұрын
@@gh87716 The rent in Kalispell is a lot cheaper than Whitefish. Most areas around the Flathead Valley are cheaper than Whitefish. Obviously, the job opportunities are greater in the bigger cities but the Flathead Valley and the Missoula area are growing rapidly.

was thinking of moving to Montana when I'm a bit older (27 now). I wanna move somewhere where it's usually cooler on average, which is odd coming from someone who is from Florida. Just trying to find the cheapest place to live where it's not miserably hot all the time, I much prefer the cold.

So, I really like your video. Looking for some more space in life, We keep moving further away from Seattle but it keeps following us. Looking at your cost of living numbers, we could live well... if incomes are similar. My question is can a blue collar guy get a job and feed his family? How does one evaluate that aspect of a relocation?
@d.vaders1178
@d.vaders1178 2 жыл бұрын
We are in Libby, Mt. We are retiring…wish we were 20 years younger as we believe we could choose our own income by starting a blue collar service business. I have been paying $150/wk for housecleaning (4 hour job). Our lawn care service runs $75 a week for mowing and trimming only…takes 3 guys 20 minutes, so $75/hr. Our electrician was $800 on new wiring for an AC hvac unit, bid on new hot water heater install (propane) was $800 labor only (took 2.5 hours). Excavation work for new shop, 2 guys, 2 days, 1/3 acre clearing deforestation, basic dirt work, $3500. Pest control spraying for bugs around house, in crawl space, $120 per treatment 3x per year. I believe wholeheartedly, that a well planned well qualified service business could hit the ground running. The bigger issue is housing availability after the Covid driven influx of new people to MT. There are plenty of healthcare jobs too if someone is already trained in that field. I cannot imagine raising a family in our Seattle area any longer…I would consider raising children in MT the biggest reason to relocate and quality of life the second reason. Also, a blue collar guy could look into the railroad. A full career spent there would be time well invested in regards to retirement income. Building trades would do well here, landscape companies would do well. Libby is seeing a lot of retirees moving in who cannot or don’t want to do heavy labor type home maintenance/improvements themselves.

This is great information. I'm in Mercer County New Jersey (I won't say specifically what town I live in, but the prices here are all about the same). I too am tired of the chaos of living in a densely populated area, and one of my friends that I met online in a video game was initially from Montana, and she gave me a lot of information about the state that's convincing me to move there. If you would answer one question for me, I noticed on Google Maps using the satellite view that there's a plains area of Montana east of the mountains, and I would prefer to live west where it seems to be more forested and scenic. One thing I noticed west of the mountains is that most communities seem to be along a major highway route, or close to rivers. If I were to move to Montana, are there housing options outside of these communites where it far more rural and scenic? I saw your other video talking about cellphone service and high speed internet. Are there satellite internet options the further out you go from civilization, or have internet cables been run further away from towns? Thank you very much if you see these questions and get back to me. Otherwise, excellent video! I look forward to watching more of them.

There are areas that are more rural, watch my last video and I talk about that. Also, the internet options go down the farther away from the towns you go. You can get satellite internet but I've been told that it is not that fast.

Thanks for watching our video! Just like anywhere, the pay depends on what you do. It would probably work out to more here since our taxes are much lower here than they are in CA. flor pichardo I just moved from Chico (70 mi north of Sac) last summer to Missoula. I researched for quite a few years before I retired last summer. I had to wait to retire as the pay scales for govt jobs and many private industry, including healthcare, jobs are FAR lower in MT. As stated in many of these great videos (binge watching tonight lol), there’s a big difference for the median housing prices depending on where you’re looking in MT. Missoula housing is just a tad less than Chico’s housing market as of last summer. I’ve talked to many peeps in their 20’s, several married, who can’t afford to buy here even though they’re both working full-time. You really need to research your specific jobs to get a good feel for if you could afford the housing. As a LEO in Butte Co. (CA) I made far more than any PD or state trooper here and we’re on the lower end of the pay spectrum there. Cost of living here is FAR less than it is there. My insurance on 3 vehicles and travel trailer is half. CA wanted $849 to register my travel trailer for 2020, $280ish here, personalized and specialized plates for a permanent registration. NEVER have to pay registration on it again. The only thing I’ve found more expensive here is liquor lol. There, 1.75 of Jameson’s is $39 at Costco, here $60-65
