-- In this video I compare the Baofeng UV-5R ham radio to the Baofeng BF-F8HP 8-Watt ham radio. Both of these are ham radios that require a ham-radio operator license to use, also known as an Amateur Radio Operator license. I explain the differences between the BF-F8HP and the UV5R and I talk about how much power both of these Baofeng ham radios actually output, as well as if the BF-F8HP walkie talkie is worth the higher price.

This is a very interesting video, I'll give it to you Randy. I have 3 differnt version of this BF-F8HP' though not this radio. UV-5R8W, UV-5RTP, and BH-F8 (No HP). Note I got them as a complete kit with external microphone, programming cble & CD ROM, extended battery and other goodies in 2021 for around $55 from Amazon. If you subtract the goodies and their prices, these radios would be about $25 - about the price of the UV-5R at the time. The power varies per radio and per frequencies. I think it is something to do with the finals going to the antena. Oddly enough there is a hack out there for boosting the power output of the UV-5R by removing a capacitor conected to the antenna for the radio to push 8watts. I have not tried it personally, but those I know who did swear by it. Personally I'll hack a Baofeng's firmware to have triband and extended frequencies, as my ham license allows but that is all I'll do. I will not go inside and go willy nilly on surface mount componants, and end up bricking my radio. I will go in and replace an broken antenna jack or spray De-Oxit into the voulme varisitor. My extended batteries did not come with a USB-C charger, but with a 12v charger jack on the side near the top of he battery.

Its not uncommon for radios to put out less power on UHF than VHF. You'd probably get closer to advertised output in the middle of the VHF band. But as you mentioned that little extra power wont make a difference. My primary HT is a F8HP. It lives on low power (1 watt) 99 percent of the time just so I can squirt RFs for longer between recharges

What no one told me is the BF-F8H radio isn’t legal to xmit on GMRS. It states it in the manual, in the section everyone skips, where it tells you dont let your kid swallow it, etc…but after spending hours figuring out how to program it to interface with our local repeater tower, only to have it dump the settings upon switching off and then back on, I’m not sure what the point of this radio is. All the reviews state its transmitter is too noisy to be used on HF freqs, assuming you have that license, in which case you probably have a right proper HF radio anyway, and its receive range is way more limited than the range listed in the manual. My local Emer services are outside its range. If you’re only going to listen, buy a Tidradio TD-H3, which will do aircraft VHF, FM radio stations, and is a real GMRS radio, with the repeaters already programmed in, as well as the ability to listen to (and xmit on?) HF. Maybe someone can explain the use case for the Baofeng radio to me. Simplex only, front of store to back room ? It’s a dust collector now.
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon Ай бұрын
The BF-F8HP is a ham radio, so it's not going to transmit on GMRS - buying it for that would be like buying a Jeep for water-skiing. It is also only for 2M and 70CM ham bands, so it wont do anything on HF. Anyone telling you it's "too noisy" on any frequency has lied to you. I am able to receive transmissions on mine from 70+ miles away.. Basically, you bought the wrong radio for what it sounds like you want to do.
@timothy____1989
@timothy____1989 Ай бұрын
@@TheNotaRubicon awesome, thank you! I wish your reply was in the item descriptions I find online. When I stated “range” I meant the lower and upper freq range (Megas of Hertzes) listed in the manual vs what I could actually tune the radio to. If they updated their firmware so it is navigable by average humans they would be favorites. Manual programming will ALWAYS be a primary need for portable radios.
