What is the Difference Between Mambo and Salsa? - Today we clarify some of the major differences between the two styles that often get confused - the mambo and salsa. Salsa is a party social dance that was born on the streets and clubs designed for small spaces and can be lead/followed very organically. Mambo is now a rhythm dance in the ballroom industry which makes it a bit more structured and takes up more space than salsa. I had watched several other videos about this exact differentiation. You were the ONLY educator who was able to make me finally get it (by the 1:45 minute mark, no less). I'm a teacher myself (language, in my case), and I can safely say that explaining a widely misunderstood concept so effectively and quickly is rare, praiseworthy and demands expertise. Congratulations on your didactics and thank you VERY much! Definitely subscribed. :)

Really interesting , thank you for taking the time to explain this . I have been dancing on 1 for quite some time , which to me just feels comfortable , I have some friends that mostly dance on 2 , and have been trying to convert me I think LOL . I have to say I really do like the fullness of the Mambo steps .

Thanks for watching! Yes salsa on 1 is definitely easier than salsa on 2 especially if you’re just starting out! Yes we love mambo too :)

Superb explanation. I had to watch it about eight times before I finally understood the difference between "On 2 " and Mambo. I began salsa years ago but gave up because the music was too fast for me to enjoy the moves the way I felt they "should" be danced. I now finally realise that my natural inclination is to do a Mambo style "4-1 step and weight shift + hip action" on the "salsa-on-1" 3 beat and 7 beat. You explained why this never felt right at the higher bpm music played in the clubs. THANK YOU. Probably nobody will understand what I've written, but writing it has been quite a big step forward for me:-)

don't blame yourself, blame the teacher. dance lesson are bull crap money making for the so called teacher/s, or scam artists i'd say.. most teachers want their students remain beginner to mid level dancers cuz if you can move any faster that'd be on2 salsa and they have no knowledge of it. but that'd be another topic. same for ballroom salsa that's classic mambo on2 in nature but not applicable to social since ballroom salsa moves so slow loaded with hip actions, good only for slow salsa song and slow beats like you say, only ballroomers do it, because the lead moves forward like on1, bogus salsa teachers also would teach you routines that are ineffective when it comes to live dancing because music changes all the time in rapid succession..in bogus party they have to play easy dancing music throughout the party ..aka boring music. first thing to do is to move away from those so called salsa teachers, one can learn more by watching youtube international salsa dance scenes worldwide so your knowledge can expand ...Certainly, don't blame yourself, blame the so called teacher. and good luck to you PS: salsa ON1 was originally invented by- you have guessed it by now- ballroom teachers!

Interesting and valuable reply. Thank you. Here in UK, salsa has died out to a great extent compared with ten years ago - it's become a more niche thing with the successful groups local to me focusing on Afro type music which to my middle aged white male ears sounds a lot like "noise" and is far too fast to enjoy dancing to - it all becomes very mechanical and lacks any expressiveness .@@youtuub

what do you expect, salsa dance is exciting which involves alot of turning left and right spins and such, when teachers couldn't focus on that part to get ppl on track and excited , boring and lame music is enough to turn savvy dancers away ...and when ppl can't keep up with salsa they might as well do other types of dances like tango or afro like ..and bachata will put the final nail on the coffin. lol

There is also original mambo + many separated partner moves. See, for example, Mambo & Cha-cha-cha by Gladys & Antonio. This video is an in depth look at the 2nd Mambo that is closer to Salsa, etc.Both versions are equally Cuban origin & equally interesting.1st version is under G& A’s series Bailes de Salon Cubanos- Mambo y Chachacha episode. During same period,there were other dances that started +! 1 version, but sooner or later had another very orbtotall different dance +!more or less same music.Examples Cumbias 2 Pachangas 2 ( at least) Tangos- 6+ Merecumbes-3 (Colombia) etc. Other situation- several versions from start Rumbas-- 3 (Cuba) Guaguanco Yambu Columbia etc.

Not so much salsa, but mambo using the side step in the basic is similar tp international rumba if you only consider the basic foot directions. The timing, technique, feeling, styling and music is completely different however ;)

If salsa on 1 is just mambo but on one I wonder how did salsa on 2 come to be developed
@BallroomFeed
@BallroomFeed Жыл бұрын
Salsa and mambo are structurally very different especially as you progress. The patterns become very different as well as the technique. So salsa on 2 is still salsa with slightly different timing interpretation :)
@jameslepore9819

Eddie Torres popularized that "on 2" timing in NYC in the salsa revival of the 1980's. He pretty much single-handedly disseminated it in classes he was offering.
