What makes advertising work? All of us have cognitive biases that influence how we feel about brands, people, and products.
One of the sneakiest, and most powerful mental tendencies is called the mere exposure effect.
It turns out, the more we're exposed to something, the more we like it! By understanding how the mere exposure effect works in marketing, you gain the ability to wield incredible influence which can be harnessed to build reputations, influence preferences, create fans, and drive sales.
The more you understand about human psychology, the better you become at marketing, sales, and building relationships.
It can also make you a better consumer and decision-maker.
The next time you're considering a purchase, you may want to ask yourself "do I really want this, or is this just effective advertising at work?"

Yes, so true! People don't realize how much it works. A lot of times in marketing, people don't think certain things are important like social media presence. I've thought about this a lot with political signs. People see the sign enough and think they know who the candidate is on some of those categories voters aren't entirely familiar with.

Such a great observation! And when you pair it with the halo effect, it's even stronger. For example, if you saw a sign for a candidate in front of a friend's house or someone you really respect, it could make you feel all the more primed to support them too.

Love the psych angle! Those were always my favorite classes. I heard that social media is moving to a paid subscription/no ad model in Europe to comply with GDPR. Would that make it harder to take advantage of the mere exposure effect?

If that takes effect, it'll just change how people can set it in motion. It'll place a bigger emphasis on brand social channels content creation, thoughtful partnerships, and other advertising platforms.

There are a lot of factors that would influence that, including how competitive the category is, who your customers are, your budget, how quickly you want/need to grow, what you're selling, etc.

Affiliate marketing could be a great approach, since you only pay when sales are generated. Partnerships/collaborations would be another approach. You could also start creating your own content - there are a lot of brands doing a great job of creating content. Just keep in mind that you're playing the long game and that some of these approaches may take time to start paying off.
