Taking you through your options when it comes to the different entry size evaporators or maybe the turkey cooker is still the right size for you.

Great video! I wonder how many people do the math? At $75/gallon for propane cost x 2 gallons $150.00 pers season it would take someone 11 years to break even on that 1/2 pint investment w/flat pan. The you need to add the cost of wood. Even if you have trees on property factor all that labor to falling trees, cutting, splitting allowing to season. Just my 2 cents.

Nice innovation on the fluted pan bottom. I think God intended that maple syrup HAS to be done with wood fuel. Look into the thermodynamics of of the preheater configuration. Perched inside the evaporator means that it is dripping condensed water back into the boil. The air intake under the fire door is called a draft. The damper is the restrictor plate in the exhaust flue.

The pre heater has a pain under it that collects the condensate and has a drain. But your are right. I now have sap entering the rig at 210 sometimes. I gained 10 GPH

One more point to my recent post. Buy a hobby RO for $350 and then boil half the sap and cut your propane cost in half. That’s the best bang for your buck for a Turkey fryer setup!

Never do the propane exchange if possible. Instead find a fill station in your area & have the tanks refilled. The exchange tanks often aren’t filled to the full 20 lbs. I can get 3 20lb tanks fully filled for about the cost of 1 tank exchange. The only time I do an exchange is if I have a outdated tank that my local hardware store can’t by law refill. My 2X4 finisher runs on propane. Great introductory video for new small producers! I’ll be sure to recommend.

You are right that getting propane refilled is cheaper but it is still expensive and with gas going up so is propane.

Great Video. I need to gear up this year. My sugar bush is about 50 acres with 2500 to 5000 taps. Plan is to get to 2500 taps. I will go to RO but that is a year or two out. First major outlay will be my evaporator. How big an evaporator would you recommend.

For leader it is either a 7” or 11”. With the 11” you will gain gallons per hour of evaporation due to increased surface area

Why only a couple of inches in the bottom of the turkey pot? Ive had 30 tps on buckets and got only about 100-150 gals of sap for the last several years and spend about 3 days boiling with the lobster pot on the wood fire outside to get only about 1.5-2 gals of syrup. I am expanding this year adding some tubing and doubling my taps I plan to build a small RO unit to reduce the amount of sap that i need to boil back to the 100-150 gallon range to make twice as much syrup. I will run this year and try to find the bottleneck but probably look to get a more effecient pan with more surface area for next year. Does anyone make custom size pans?
@dunnfamilymaple7642
@dunnfamilymaple7642 Жыл бұрын
So the reason for only a few inches is you only have so many inches that the fire contacts your pan. Outside of that it is just storing the sap in the pan. If you fill the pot up it takes more to keep it hot, so running a lower level makes it more efficient. You might be able to get a small metal shop to make your a custom pan but generally most equipment manufacturers have set sizes. There are a lot of options that are available for pan sizes though.

Do you have a way to check the brix of the sap, if so what is it? Sounds like the trees are flowing, average is a gallon a day using buckets, if you get some tube and a little grade it will help increase gpd.
