Weird coincidence, I just finished this for the first time the other day and it really struck a chord with me as an undergrad student of creative writing. The way Joyce distills the essence of why we write at the end of the chapter where Stephen watches a girl wading in the water resonated with me unlike few other pieces of writing have.

As Stephen Daedalus comes to understand, “Do you know what Ireland is?' asked Stephen with cold violence. 'Ireland is the old sow that eats her farrow.” And so it was for Joyce. James Joyce fanboy here. Good job dude. Couple notes to help further your analysis: 1) T. S. Elliot's criticism of Ulysses and 'Tradition and the Individual Talent's are both good, short pieces to help further modernism's perspective on the relationship between history, art, and the artist. 2) Ellmanns's biography on Joyce is essential for masters and Ph.D level scholarship on him and I highly recommend. 3) Jung's universal unconscious and archetypes further analysis even more and help provide a framework for Stephen's perception of heroism and rebellion (the original title was 'Stephen Hero,' after all). 4) Joyce's philosophy was heavily influenced by Saint Thomas Aquinas, which then dances with Aristotelian and Platonic aesthetic theories. There so much more... Good job. Again!

This is my number one favorite book. I just read it for my third pass. Its amazing to me how this book hit at 16 vs 24 vs 33 as I have grown up. Thanks for the great video!

I have a story to tell. I was in Dublin for Bloomsday, for the century anniversary of Ulysses. I got a Joyce tattoo, got closer to my wife, and bought a third edition of Portrait of the Artist from 1922. I read Ulysses with a Joyce scholar on a study abroad trip, and saw Barry McGovern read the last two chapters to complete the novel in Dublin on Bloomsday.

This is so interessting. I was just reading how the "german studies" or in my language "Germanistik" started to become a University Discipline. And the parallel beween the "Irish Revival" and the reason why german studies started to become a discipline is fascinating. In both cases the country here Germany and Ireland, wanted to find their own national identity, something that distinguishes themselves. For Ireland it was the distinction from England, for Germany it was the distinction from France and Italy, which both where quite the powerhouses in the 16. century. Italy and France werent just places, they were THE places, where brilliant minds and artists were born, and the world (Europe at that time) was looking up to them. But Germany wanted to find something that makes their culture something special and unique. They wanted to find art and poetry, that makes them an equal player in this geopolitical fight and race of who has the best literature, art, poetry etc. What we can take from that is, that People always try to distinguish themselves from others, not just individually but in groups as well. They try to identify themselves with something that is special and unique to their country/place/group. At the end we just want to have appreciation from others on our own works, we sometimes deny that, but it is all in ourselves. The drive to create something and being respected and honored for that thing, make our mark in History.

Omg I saw you in readings the other day!!

I saw that weren't into fantasy and science fiction, but that is because, as with many other genres, they are filled with dumb self indulgent works of juvenile escapism. I would like to recommend some the most poetical and imaginative works that I have come across with original ideas that change your worldview and interesting concepts that make you think. 1) Ghormenghast: this work has the best prose I have ever read and the scenes are like pictures in a book, as if painted by pen, and the characters are vivid and strange, yet very human at the same time. It explores socialism, classes and Tradition and many other themes. 2) Worm Ouroboros: if you enjoyed the epics, you would certainly love this. But it is fantastical and magical and subtly ironic. Prose are poetic and beautiful. Yet it is written in Elizebethan style so it is not an easy read. 3) King of Elflands' daughter: purple prose, but used in the right way. It starts as a classic fairy tale, but explores existentialism and other themes with such great imagination. It is pretty short, but it really makes you think about the world. You have probably already noticed it, English is not my first language

I have this guilty thought lingering in my head. I am an artist(aspiring artist) probably. I saw a friend posting about how everyone's an artist until the rent is due. They say it's about money and rich kids being able to do their heart's desire and not everyone get that chance. It stuck with me heavy for a while. I feel some part of it was right that's why my heart felt heavy for it. But mostly, I'm just pissed:3. Maybe I'm just too pompous to admit that he was right.

In some way the arts are highly underappreciated in germany. But then again, most people will be highly impressed if you say you´re an artist, classical musician,... . With lawyers, doctors and stuff many people will also be impressed, but very many people will assume the for example lawyer, thinks too high of himself and in a way looks down on the others. It´s like they think just because you studied something academically difficult with a high reputation, you´re elitist or something. But people here do admire creativity and talent.
