it's considered one of the hardest only by natives all natives think THEIR language is the hardest from all i've tried i say japanese is the hardest and the worst because it's not one language it's 6 different time-raveling chinese mixed up with old japanese then there are tonal and clicking languages the sanskrit based langauges with 6 different letters having exactly the same sound for half the sounds like arabic ه and خ but SIX versions for HALF the sounds each and when arabic is with furigana arabic is plain a good language. not counting that no one needs japanese but arabic script is used across many many different countries the actual hardest parts about arabic is 1 forced cursive. no one ever bothered to create a typeface? and 2 computer fonts i don't understend why arabic is always so tiny you need a microscope to see it why no make as big as latin scripts हिन्दी in comparison twice the size and you can see most of the letters unlike this ذنذنذنذنذنذنذن

I've always heard a lot of people say German and Arabic are ugly, but I always disagreed! They only have a reputation for sounding ugly because the world's most infamous German and Arab examples were horrid people and spoke very angrily in brusque tones, spittle flying. But when you hear these languages in contemporary, casual conversation, like two friends just sitting in a cafe? They're so beautiful to listen to. Arab has this gorgeous airiness to it, it sounds so light like it's dancing, and German has such meaty consonants that feel good on your tongue, I love attempting to pronounce it.

Joking aside, it's definitely a contest between Northern Dutch and some Vietnamese dialects and related languages. The former has so much choking it makes Hebrew sound soothing in comparison. g, ch and r are all godawfully uvular and fricative, and the speaker you chose was far from the worst - to hear how bad it gets just turn on any Dutch talk show. Belgian Dutch on the other hand sounds sweet and aristocratic as hell, it's a mix of all the best features of Germanic with some additional French charm. And Vietnamese literally sounds like tape being played backwards, due to all the glottal stops with and without those implosive consonants, plus the retroflex weirdness and the incredible amount of nasality. And the incredible amount of vowel combinations with tones added on top. And the even-more-than-Chinese monosyllabic, choppy nature of it. Even American sounds like a normal language next to that. And as another comment says, Danish doesn't count since it's actually a throat disease.

If I were going to pick a language that "sounded like a record playing backwards," I would definitely pick Khmer. With all those initial (but never final) consonant clusters, it really does fit the bill. Even Cambodians generally think Vietnamese sounds "soft." I think what puts more people off about Vietnamese, at least the southern dialects, is the extreme tones (the rising tone frequently involves a vocal break in older women) and the strident nasally-pronounced vowels. But I kinda love it. :-)

It's all about the flow. I kind of hated the nasals and r in French when I started learning the language, but now that I can speak with a little bit of proficiency I actually quite like the way they fit into the language. Over time languages develop their own natural flow. If people started speaking Esperanto as a native language, even that would sound beautiful after three generations.
@matroqueta6825
@matroqueta6825 Жыл бұрын
I think French more than any other language stands out for sounding beautiful when spoken by a fluent speaker, and absolutely hideous when spoken by a noob. That must be why it's so polarizing. If I had to guess, it's because non-fluent speakers can't pull of the _liaision._ It's really hard for learners to wrap their head around how in French you don't pronounce words, you pronounce sentences.

I had been wondering actually what even makes a language beautiful, since Duolingo really wants to tell you how many are. It also described Korean as handsome, and German as cute. I can't speak for the former, but I agree with German. Baumwolle :3 . It also just sounds nice. I do wonder though, if no language can be ugly, can one truly be beautiful? Might just be personal prefence at the end of the day. I do know personally I don't really like the sound of French, but the hideous overuse of it, and uber strong French accents in car and perfume adverts could be the main cause of that.
@GwyndolinOwO
@GwyndolinOwO Жыл бұрын
I think a lot of it is just preference, but your mother language can have some impact on what you do and don't like. English does have hard sounds in its language but overall none of the sounds are overly "harsh" like in French, Arabic, or even German, so some people might not be used to how they sound. And a lot of western cultures might have a fascination with Korean and Japanese languages due to the culture, and the languages there also avoid a lot of those "choking" sounds that some people really seem to hate. I don't think languages like French, Arabic, German, or Dutch are ugly but as someone that grew up learning English they do sound very different to me. I also haven't studied those languages at all so when I do hear them i'm pretty unfamiliar with the sounds. But yeah overall its pretty subjective. Beauty in itself is subjective so no matter what you talk about, there's no way you can clearly define it. You'll always have some people that won't agree with you, haha.
@cameron6770
@cameron6770 Жыл бұрын
@@GwyndolinOwO yeah, I agree. I feel like English speakers (as a huge generalisation) tend to prefer softer sounding languages. And I guess the intonation more generally; I think a lot of people go for the Romance languages partly because they are more musical sounding (again very subjective).
@Ametisti
@Ametisti Жыл бұрын
@@GwyndolinOwO oh, that makes sense yeah. I kinda didn't think about the native tongue side of it for some reason. I can't say I've noticed German sounding too harsh, but maybe I've more encountered softer speakers of it or something. I DO dislike the "choking" sounds in French though. Can't say I've paid attention too much to Arabic, though the writing system looks kinda cool. Can't imagine that's easy.
@GwyndolinOwO
@GwyndolinOwO Жыл бұрын
@@Ametisti German definitely sounds softer than french but I can still see how someone would call some of the sounds in german "harsh". It doesn't quite reach the choking sounds of french but some of its sounds are pretty different to English. I'm sure different dialects affect it too. But yeah, mother tongue is at least one thing that affects how we feel. The language learning community is pretty international but another thing i've personally noticed is that most language learning channels that mainly speak English attract either English speaking people or people that speak a European language. So we're missing a lot of opinions from Asia and Africa. Their definition of a beautiful language could be a bit different than ours. But yeah, I'm sure its possible to write a whole novel on language and beauty, so many things are subjective about it and it really depends if you're talking about a single regions opinion or the whole world.

可能是因为每个音节都是一个字,而每个字都会有好几个声调,字和字之间界限分明,所以听起来会有些不连续感。This may be because each syllable is a word, and each word has several tones, with distinct boundaries between words, so it can sound discontinuous.

Unlike the stereotype, I think the spoken German is sultry and smooth, perhaps due to the "sch" sound that is used a lot in the spoken language. It sounds like a snake's hiss, which I found oddly comforting. Of course, this excludes the screaming part (heck, any language will sound harsh and ridiculous if the speaker is screaming and/or constantly mad)

I can't speak mandarin (yet), but to my ears, mandarin is good and catchy, sounds like they are singing. Some people may think it's ugly due to lack of exposure to it. Before I was immersed in English, English used to sound like lots of dogs growling because of all that "Rrr" sound that is very common in the language, nowadays it just sounds fine.

You could make an argument that the way some Danes speak has evolved out of a language reform binge that introduced... some new economisations to compensate for unnatural sounds.. that now has evolved into just muddle again, which is why the language reforms came up to begin with. That's not pretty. But it's typically nice to listen to anyway. I think the best argument for establishing that an ugly language exists, other than Esperanto, is to point out that modern American "common speak" from TV, basically, has evolved out to disassociate itself from all traces of actual language character. It's all well enough when foreigners will adopt a plain English accent to avoid the breakage, or work with creating the sounds that are distinguishably American English. But I have actually heard several foreigners now who have had better "Acme American" accents - as in having the mannerisms that make something instantly sound American - than natives. Because they speak consciously, privately and otherwise, in a way that would remove the "tell" from their accent. And that's another way, without Danish language-reform, to end up in a place where the now super-plain language will evolve to make "economisations" of sounds from that identityless, constructed language without character. Which makes an ugly language.
