The Montgomery Ward mailing list joke was based on back in the day if you signed up for the mailing list from the store Montgomery Ward you would get a lot of junk mail. When mailing lists were a thing, people used to do that to people they did not like, the equivalent would be signing up someone's email for SPAM on the internet.

The guy playing the blind "spy contact" is Ian McNeice. He went on to play Churchill in Doctor Who amongst other things. I have spoken to him a few times and he is a true gentleman.

I didn't immediatly recognized him, but yeah I've seen him in a bunch of stuff! Remember him being the oficial annoucer in the mini-series "Rome"

@10:19 “Your Ripple Blanc, Sir” Ripple is horendous quality cheap wine. The joke is that a nice place would serve it or even offer the cork (in this case a screw-top) to smell the quality of the wine. And then you see how toxic the wine is when it eats the glass.

I 100% agree with you about her demeanour. If I had to guess where she is from I would have guessed the same! 😂 So, correct assessment of her behaviour, wrong location geographically - western europe (Portugal)

It is sad to see a more modern audience just don't get a lot of the humor in this movie :( This probably one the funniest movies ever made.

I think its a gerational thing probably. The movie is hilarious but a lot of references go over the head of most younger viewers. But even still, its very enjoyable! 😋

@@ptthatswhatshesaid That's how Airplane! was as well. For me, one of the biggest jokes in both Airplane! and Top Secret was the use of serious actors in comedic roles. Airplane! had Peter Graves, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen; the last two before they took on comedic roles. In Top Secret, Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago's Omar Sharif walks around inside a crushed car. Then there's Peter Cushing doing an entire scene in reverse with an oversized eye.

A later movie that's a fantastic parody film is Black Dynamite. It entirely nails the look and feel of 1970s black action movies and is highly recommended. It's either a 2000s or 2010s movie.

@@tempsitch5632 Montgomery Ward used to send lots of ads in the mail. Being put on the Montgomery Ward mailing list means the guard will get lots of junk mail as retaliation for mistreating Nick.

I think you need to make a small adjustment to the audio. The movie sounds equal to or louder than you. Aim for 60% You/40% Movie.

We thought it was quite funny that the female team of that made up eastern german nazy country was made up entirely by men (even if they were trans) to make sure that they would always win! 😂 especially funny now since I think there are some countries that have actually done that

This was an era where trans were not a topic. That joke was about the mass use of steroids of east german athlets. Oh and btw: East germany wasn´t a nazi country, it was full blown communism.

@@ptthatswhatshesaid Communist and Fascist Armys look awfully identical, like the brutal tactics that both regimes using against their enemys, inside and outside of their borders. If you like, google some pictures of the DDR Volkarmee ( GDR National People's Army ) and compare that to the earlier Nazi Army and the Soviet Army. And don´t forget that the GDR was holding all their citizens hostage with the wall, used a whole ministry of spies against dissidents and imprisoned for politcal reasons. I don´t think they wanted to show east german fascist, more likely they showed up the similar behavior of both.
