What is this thing called love - Erroll Garner in 1964
Erroll Louis Garner ( 1921 - 1977) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads.
His best-known composition, the ballad Misty, has become a jazz standard. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ,
Erroll began playing piano at the age of 3. He attended George Westinghouse High School, as did fellow pianists Billy Strayhorn and Ahmad Jamal.
Garner was self-taught and remained an "ear player" all his life he never learned to read music. .
At age 14 in 1937 he joined local saxophonist Leroy Brown. He played locally in the shadow of his older pianist brother Linton Garner and moved to New York in 1944. He briefly worked with the bassist Slam Stewart, and though not a bebop musician per se, in 1947 played with Charlie Parker on the famous "Cool Blues" session. Although his admission to the Pittsburgh music union was initially refused because of his inability to read music, they eventually relented in 1956 and made him an honorary member.
Garner is credited with having a superb memory of music. After attending a concert by the Russian pianist Emil Gilels, Garner returned to his apartment and was able to play a large portion of the performed music by recall. He was also known for his occasional vocalizations while playing, which can be heard on many of his recordings.
He helped to bridge the gap for jazz musicians between nightclubs and the concert hall. Until his death on January 2, 1977, he made many tours both at home and abroad, and produced a large volume of recorded work.
In this recording he is accompanied by Eddie Calhoen on bass and Kelly Martin on drums.

It amazes me how different people hear different things from the same recording. The double bass sounds perfect on this track and yet someone can't hear it. I think a hearing check is called for!

Erroll Garner never disappoints. My all time favourite jazz pianist, he can never be knocked off the top spot on the podium for me, even if Tatum and Peterson were perhaps technically superior.

"Errol Garner is justly famous for what jazzmen call 'fooling around with the beat,' because he doesn't seem to let his left hand know what his right hand is doing. In general, his left hand plays a steady 4/4 march rhythm, quite opposite to the modern trend, but his right hand is playing the melody in a variety of changing tempos: first he drags behind and then he more than catches up in constantly varying fractions of the beat" - The Story of Jazz by Marshall Stearns

This looks like the BBC "Jazz 625" session but I don't remember this tune being broadcast.

What would programs in special education have done for his work and career as a jazz pianist years ago? Do a comparative study for coming to terms with an evaluation of musical talents of Peterson and Tatum and Garner. Not an unreasonable request in the least.

Would his life and career have lasted longer had he done things differently for maintaining health? Fair question to say the least.

It always struck me how, especially on the recordings but also here, how inaudible the bass is. I assume this was deliberate, perhaps Errol's choice, as if the bass were there for the pianist's purposes, an auditory prop. Of course, Garner is so protean he sounds like a solo performer in almost every context but the recordings with Bird.

I love your word "protean" for that perfectly describes Erroll Garner's musical genius.
