Often wondered what happened to THX? Watched hundreds upon hundreds of movies in THX at a local cinema from the early to mid ‘90s. Also, owned my own THX Ultra 2 home setup. Thanks for this video.

Thanks for this video, which is a good summary of what THX was and currently is. Personally, I think the times have changed to such a degree that THX has kind of made itself obsolete. In the early years, the idea was to set a higher standard for movie payback that allowed the audience to see & hear what the creators intended you to experience. So seeing a movie in a THX certified theater gave you that " guarantee". This was usefull as the quality of the picture and sound varied quite a bit among theaters, at that time. When THX started certification for consumer electronics, it was also very useful, so you knew that your THX-certified equipment was properly suited for the task of optimal playback of movies at home. Again, this made perfect sense as the equipment that was available, varied greatly in quality and potential. However, in the following years THX started to lower their standards for the home. First only "THX" existed as the "seal of excellence". This was later re-branded as THX Ultra and a lower-spec THX Select was introduced, so manufacturers (and THX) could put the THX logo on more and more devices, simply by lowering their standards (which undermines their own philosophy that quality should come first). Meanwhile, technologies evolved and more and more companies already surpassed the standards of THX quite some time ago. In my personal view, THX has lowered their standards to such a degree, that it has become obsolete or is but a shadow of it's former self. Just for reference : I've watched and heard many films over several decades. Both in THX and non-THX theaters (with 35mm, 70mm, 70mm IMAX and digital 2K and digital 4K laser projection) and in home cinema's (on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Bluray). I've enjoyed the first Dolby Digital 5.1 presentations, the first DTS presentation, all the way to current Dolby Cinema (Atmos).

All valid points! I think another thing is the marketing department. They seem like they've really scaled back on placing their logos before movies and products in the last ten years.
@cubdukat

How true. A perfect example of that was the late Arclight chain and the "Black Box" auditoriums they had. Each screen was like a miniature screening room. It seemed that they took the one thing that THX excelled at and expanded on it: controlled standards. The SMPTE standard by itself isn't half bad if theatre chains would actually adhere to it. That's the entire reason THX came into existence: to make the filmgoing experience as stable as possible from a technical standpoint.

Fun fact: The 20,000-loc figure is (now) heavily misquoted. In a 2015 interview, the man himself corrected an earlier statement of his and said how the actual code written to produce the sound was about 300 lines to configure an _existing_ sound generator and then 325 lines to actually "play" the configured generator. That said, the existing sound generator in question itself contained about 200,000 loc, ten times the (mis-) quoted figure, but those weren't specifically written for Deep Note, they were required to make the generator _be_ a generator in the first place instead of just dead hardware.

@@MovieUniversity I've seen how expensive 5.1 speaker setups can go so I know for a fact that the setup I have is on the low end side. Although what I'm thinking of doing is getting an atmos capable receiver, and replacing the front stereos with a pair bookshelves and using the small Logitech speakers as atmos speakers. Plus I want to get a receiver regardless because the they included sub which is where everything plugs into only allows for SPDIF for your optical or coax at most for digital stuff. So I can't get surround sound out of a switch for example.

@@MovieUniversity not yet, I just got my surround sound set up. In case you're curious to set up I have is a Logitech z906. They're technically designed for computers but it's working out recently on my TV. The next step for me is to get a receiver just so I can use native HDMI sources. My philosophy with my setup is that I want to put together something that's on a budget because I work a minimum wage job, but I also wanted to be something good. Which is what love me to get the Logitech Z906. Especially since it's been recommended to me by friends that I trust. And I'm currently pretty happy with it for now

The reason why THX's popularity went down was because they began to phase out of certifying physical media release 1 year after the 2012 Blu-Ray releases of Indiana Jones 1-4, Titanic & Red Tails only to focus on cinema as a restructure, technology & digital media like streaming services or video games.

So how does that work in the end? Do I have to get everything THX certified from, bluray player, AVR to TV and of course speakers to have that experience? What if I use a PS5 as a bluray player which is not certified. Will it still be the same quality? And are movies still working with THX besides Star Wars? Like from WB for example?
@MovieUniversity
@MovieUniversity Жыл бұрын
Yes, the ENTIRE pipeline has to be THX certified or it doesn't work. Same thing with Dolby Vision or any other electronics certification, the entire ecosystem of speakers, wires, TV etc. must all be certified by that company. You can't buy generic brand Walmart or Amazon cables and then expect premium performance. It's one of those things that you get what you pay for.

Fun Fact: The Fun Fact about Deep Note needing 20.000 lines of code is wrong. According to James Anderson Moorer, it´s creator, Deep Note needed 355 lines of code in the original C language and another 300 lines in the patch for a synthesizer.
@MovieUniversity
@MovieUniversity Жыл бұрын
The deep note did indeed take 20,000 lines of C Code. Not only can this be easily found by a Google search but THX confirmed it to me via two separate people during two separate talks. I’ll even help you out www.google.com/search?q=deep+note+thx+20000+lines+of.code&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS711US711&oq=deep+note+thx+20000+lines+of.code&aqs=chrome..69i57.9259j0j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

@@MovieUniversity None of the search results actually quote THX themselves. They're all just re-quotes of that same figure, with none even one iota more reliable and trustworthy than the other. "Actually I made a mistake with that 20,000 lines of code statement - that was just off the top of my head. I need to correct that if I can figure out how, but it also depends a bit on what lines of code you count. The original 30-year-old C program is 325 lines, and the “patch” file for the synthesizer was 298 more lines. I guess it just felt like 20,000 lines when I did it." - Dr. Andy Moorer, interview with CDM, 2015 You're welcome.

@@MovieUniversity Either way, you are such a sad figure. You want to be some sort of respectable journalist, a reporter, an investigator, but all you're doing is joining the choir. One would have expected you'd be jumping at new piece of evidence when it emerges, especially when it goes against commonly available knowledge! Alas, all you're doing is arguing from authority, screaming, "my sources are better than your sources" without so much as a hint of a consideration as to what those sources actually say. You're not even interested in uncovering the truth. Rather you're fervently preaching dogmatic hearsay. You're not a journalist. You have more in common with a religious fanatic. "My source is better because it's the corp who said it." Yeah, how many times in the history of journalism has that ever not worked out so well for the truth. Again, me, change the world? Hah, I got nothing to lose. All I'm doing is presenting new evidence. It's you who doesn't want to see it. Here's an idea: If your line to THX is so direct, why don't you confront them with this new figure from 2015 and ask what this is about? Maybe they even thank you for correcting their own now outdated information. But of course, only if you're not too proud to do so.
