No need for dolby vision. I have seen tvs with dolby vision and in hdr10+ and like hdr10+ better. In most cases turning off dolby vision helps the tvs specially the lower budget tvs.

I have a pretty decent audio system and I invested a good amount on extensive room treatments. I know not everybody has the flexibility of doing this, but acoustic treatment makes a huge difference in clarity. Movie dialogue is clear even at late night low levels.

The real question I have is if say you set the cross over to 40 on your front left and right speakers. Do I then set the crossover on the actual sub to 40 too?

For me the Dolby Atmos is the most important factor. So I would choose Dolby Cinema or Cinemark XD over Imax. I just saw Furiosa in Dolby Cinema and it was amazing. Going for my 2nd viewing on Cinemark XD.

most of the comments here do not appreciate reference level, as how the producers intended it to be heard. ofcourse from tv speakers & cheap soundbars, this dynamic volume would sound crap..hence the availability to select night mode, enhanced vocal & dynamic range compressed/compression in the tv/soundbar volume option is made for selection. i for one, am a movie enthusiasts, audiophile & music lover, appreciate greatly the dynamic range in the volume. enjoyable, stunning & soothing all at the same time. takes you from being in your living/cinema room to the stage/movie..total immersion.

disney hotstar has the worst compressed volume, no dynamic at all. prime video is the best. regardless, if i were to watch bigblockbuster movies, i'd get a proper 4kuhd bluray.

I have both. My main living room has a receiver and speaker set up (floor standing and in-wall/ceiling) and in a rec room I have a 3.1 soundbar set up. While a soundbar is significantly better than TV speakers (especially a soundbar with centre channel) there really is no comparison to a decent receiver and speaker set-up. Even an entry level set-up blows a soundbar away.

Oppenheimer proved the demand for the Traditional IMAX Format is sky high, because seeing a movie on a 60 foot screen over 80 feet wide just isn’t something you can easily get at home. It’s what makes IMAX’s product and brand so exclusive, and has been for decades. You know when you see an IMAX movie not because the resolution is higher or the sound is louder, but because you are literally seeing movies larger than you’ve ever seen them (not just by a few feet and moved closer to your face… I’m talking a behemoth screen scaling beyond your peripheral vision). The switch to Digital in 2008 has only diluted the product and only created more confusion for customers. IMAX seems to be listening. However, the distinction between the presentation of the format is still up in the air for me. I’ve always considered IMAX its own scope (1.43:1), not just “theater geometry” and I’m sure most agree there. Our local Cinemark has a purpose-built IMAX, yet they only present movies in Digital (not Laser). Does “Filmed for IMAX” always mean I can get to experience those movies at the IMAX scope, or just an expanded 1.9:1 scope? They need to get back to basics of their product.. what IS their product? It’s clear the public knows, but IMAX seems on the fence about addressing the good they still have left, with 15/70 projection and laser technology. They just need to get away from traditional marketing word salad and start being more transparent on the what they’re delivering.

The simple answer is that Movie "sound engineers" are either clueless or are forced to go against their own sound sensibilities by Jesuit freemasonic media agendas of subliminal mind control. I have remastered movie soundtracks in "Audacity" to a much more reasonable balanced sound overall in order to watch them without pissing about with volume control during the viewing. There is absolutely no excuse for the dreadful movie sound engineering of modern day movies, none whatsoever! The idea that they sound engineer for "movie theatres" is utter nonsense and even if that were the case then why do they not offer a "home sound remaster" option on the DVD's, do they think everyone lives in a cinema ? Nefarious reasons is why they sound engineer movies so badly!

aspect ratio is width divided by height. When you are filming with anamorphic lenses with a 1.33 desqueeze factor, shot originally 3840x2160, the new resolution becomes 5107x2160. Now, with the resolution, if you calculate the aspect ratio, it is 2.36:1. So, is this the number you give the theatre or do I round it to 2.39:1 to the popular ratio?

As I have a next room neighbour, my lounge is my media room, and a q600b soundbar with rear speakers is by far enough for my needs. I can't have the volume past 25 in the evening so it is never going to be totally immersive, but at the same time it gives a very enhanced soundstage especially with dtsX blurays, which sound warmer and fuller than Dolby digital. Atmos doesn't interest me, as I don't want ceiling speakers, and don't want to compromise with upfiring, as that defeats the main desire of having height channels, if I was to get really involved. It's great people have the choice now, but 5.1 will do for me 🙃

I started watching the Series- Supernatural recently and noted that the colours look amazing. The contrast is phenomenal. Blacks look crisp without those pixilated artifacts showing up. And my TV is 7 years old. Astonishing what film captures. Yes I do realise high cost in processing, but the look is amazing.

Being annoyed by black bars is a physiological problem. Uneducated people believe that some how they are being cheated out of a missing part of the image. " This is amplified by the misinformation of the publicity for IMAX. It says see the whole picture. I retaliate by saying I am missing the sides of the image because human vision is approximately 2.5 : 1. (Do you see your shoes and sky when you are walking down the street?)

Completely by chance I got a Laserdisc player, which I love. I collect movies and got quite a few formats that I can watch. Each has their own specific vibe for a specific mood that I’m feeling and I’ll hook it up for the day to watch what I got on it. Laserdisc has been my favorite recently. Nostalgic, but still obviously not the most ideal format, I’m lucky mine autoflips the disc. But it’s definitely more for the experience of the LD than the preferred format.

The truth of the matter is that DVD originally stood for, “digital versatile disc”, not “digital video disc.” It changed over to the latter around the time Blockbuster arrived who rented and sold cold pressed discs. Before that, the idea was that DVD could possibly be marketed like VHS, a recordable format, which would make dvd, “versatile”. Of course people did record movies on disc but not much in the early days. Recording on disc did catch on down the road but it was never pushed to the same degree that VHS was.

The part about BD secondary audio being set to on is throwing me. In the manual for my UB820 and a Dolby home guide they both state that to get full Atmos and DTS X, both should be set to bitstream and the secondary audio set to off. They both state this setting on players is for an alternative audio track on the disc if some of your equipment doesn’t support the primary audio track. Not that this setting allows for a separate overhead mix to play for full Atmos or DTS X. Some clarification on this would help, thank you.
@MovieUniversity
@MovieUniversity Ай бұрын
I'm sure it depends on model, brand, and firmware updates. What Brian states in the video is a generalized settings, however, your equipment may differ. Try out all the settings on and off and see what you like best. At the end of the day, you decide what sounds best on your system, not strangers on KZfaq.

I am a great fan of Dolby Sound. I personally think Dolby 7.1 is far better than Dolby Atmos. In a cinema, both formats use the same speakers, the same theatre processor and the same amps. Provided you have an excellent sound engineer EQ your theatre there should be no difference to the quality of the sound. In a 7.1 theatre you have your wall and rear wall surrounds. In an Atmos installed theatre you have ceiling speakers, which I have yet to hear any sound come from them. The Atmos wall surrounds are aimed towards the center of the last couple of rows in the auditorium, this I never understood. At the very front of the theatre you have surrond sound speakers talking to no one, as this is normally an exit cross-over route. You tend to get warmer sound from a 7.1 install. I have not yet heard a cinema where the Atmos is better than 7.1. Simple check, Listen to the Adverts and Trailers, they will be in Dolby 5.1 or 7.1. I normally find that when the Atmos sound comes on for the film, it's not as good quality-wise of the Ads and Trailers. DolbyVison on the other hand is very good. A cinema marketed as a Dolby Cinema will have Dolby Vision. Dolby insist on the auditorium being black, and even the projection room to be painted black too, which makes no difference (a black projection room) to the image. However Dolby seem to be happy that a lot of screens today do not have black masking. So if the film is in 1.37: 1.85 (on a Scope screen) you will have wide sides (screen) showing where ther is no image, and this alters the contrast of your image. If the Dolby Cinema Install has a 1.85 screen, the Scope image is screened as letterbox (just like tv). I have heard from industry insiders that Aledgedly some Atmos movies are just a 5.1 or 7.1 tracks. Dolby has been great for the cinema industry, but for me Dolby 7.1 can't be beaten when set up correctly. If I have a choice between a Atmos or a 7.1 theatre for my film of the week, I will always go 7.1 everytime.
